In this video, we have debated Radhika Desai of ‪@InternationalManifesto‬ there is a meaningful emergence of global convergence between the Global North and the Global South. We have discussed neoliberalism and the alternative path that China has traversed in these years. We discussed what socialism is and can be. Finally we discussed the implication of the recent election in India, with a sharp focus on neo-fascism in India.

The difference, China based on the socialism attitude, Chinese characteristic key thing. Yes they are not allow the capital control government Western country words and capitalism is not fit China. The majority of people were left note protection. That’s why the India has a so slow development today is capitalism will not help the judge people.

China is not a socialist country. It is a capitalistic dictatorship which they call capitalism with Chinese characteristics. Any way, this has proved beneficial for China. How long can this system sustain no one knows
@palmpalm5131

@@pagan-540 China is a socialist country. There are many millionaires and billionaires in the country but they are not allowed to direct or control government policy in their favour. Instead the government’s priority is to look after and benefit the general population, the people. That’s how they were able to direct policy, funds and resources to lift 800 million people out of poverty. In doing so they have lifted the greatest amount of people out of poverty in the shortest amount of time. Transportation costs, energy costs, healthcare etc. are cheap in China because this is to benefit the people. They burst their housing bubble because their government said houses are for living in, not for investing. And each time large corporations (like Evergrand) or corporate leaders (like Jack Ma) try to do something that would enact harm to the people, the government always look after the best interest of their citizens first. Twist it however you like but the truth is that’s a socialist country. Learned from Vijay Prashad, professor Richard Wolff, Jeffrey Sachs, Martin Jacques, Radhika Desai and many more.

@@pagan-540 The area which are most important to everyday life is dominated by the government, like the water, the electricity, the transportation, the bank, the oil. That's why the government have enough money to control the economy, and the cost of living is not that high as the western world.
@yellowsheeps

@@pagan-540 China is a market socialist country. Socialism is at the CPC core. ALL sectors of importance are 100% controlled by the Government (i.e. banking, military, access to housing, primary education, primary healthcare, food security, telecommunications, nuclear power, water and sanitation, high speed rail etc..) because these sectors provide the fundamental basics for a good life for the majority. Outside of Banking, the West used to be the same decades ago. Repeating Western propaganda that China is a dictatorship just shows how brainwashed and out of touch you are with reality. My advice...leave your cave and visit China if your "free-dumb" life affords you actual freedom to travel abroad. BTW, there are over 165 million Chinese which travel outside of China yearly and this number is only growing.

Another very good discussion. A couple of comments: to the presenter, could you try not to speak over your guest. No matter how confident you think you are on some point. It's quite ugly when you do this and I'm for one not that interested in your point of view. I'm interested in hearing your guests' thoughts. My second comment is concerned with China. Look they're miles ahead of everyone now. I would say at least a decade or two ahead of most Western countries in many aspects. Just one statistic. There is an index called Nature index (I'm not a fan of these type of rankings but it's important because it's a Western capitalist ranking) for the most "productive" institutions in terms of high quality scientific publication output. Of the top twenty institutions, fifty percent are from China. The US are a distant second at 20 percent. Then comes Germany and England at ten percent each and then France and Japan at five percent each. Research, drives innovation. Without it capitalism isn't able to grow. Forty years ago, China was no where to be seen. It was considered a backward country in terms of science from the point of view of the West. You should let this single statistic sink in. If you've ever been to China recently you see this tremendous transformation both economically, and in fact I have to say, culturally. There is a lot the West can learn from the Chinese I think.
@IndiaGlobalLeft
@IndiaGlobalLeft 3 месяца назад
If you listen carefully to what we have been saying, you would realize that the debate is not about the convergence between China and the West. That has been the most uncontested fact, and the most spectacular in recent human history. The key point is- China is an outlier as far as the Global South is concerned. A lot of people in the West, specially those who do not follow Global South closely makes the mistake of seeing China's narrowing of gap as Global South's narrowing of gap. That's a fatal mistake. From time to time, a handful of countries from the "East" rise from backward economic level, narrow the gap, and then fold up somewhere close to the West, or a somewhat lower. The problem is that specific country- whether it was Japan or NIC economies, or China now- then diverge away from the rest of the Global South. And what we then have is a new situation where the West and that new country represent one block economically (not necessarily politically), while the rest of the Global South keeps lingering. It is most atrocious and ignorant today to think of Global Convergence when 100s of countries literally are at the brink of sovereign debt crises. That is the main point, not the rise of China. Even the most ignorant person today doesn't doubt China's rise. We can debate about sectors, but that is irrelevant to the larger discussion.
@AntonStampfl

Haha, not at all. We replied because it is not about us (as in the host or the other team members of the show). Apart from the fact that unlike you, we are definitely interested in you (just being sarcastic), the main point is that rise of China has coincided with continued immiseration of hundreds of countries under the global economic system. If we are to understand global capitalism in its true sense, or at least be committed to struggles of the most impoverished people on earth, we will have to sometimes see beyond the debate about China vs the West.

We the people must choose to have affordable, good housing, food, education, life possibilities that support our ability to thrive. When we grasp that we actually have a choice over who "leads" us to these opportunities, we will be able to create societies that produce them. Neither am I convinced with the prof. She is taking what she feels is right rather than what is seen actually or what the history or data shows. According to her, the world became multipolar in 1914 after the fall of the British empire. Rubbish, world was more multipolar with Britain empire, Spanish empire, Portuguese empire back then. After the fall of Europe after Second World War, USA has been only real empire, more so after 1980 after the fall of ussr and Berlin Wall. World has never been so much unipolar ever in the history. China still lacks the technological know how. The fugue of china’s consumer market is very poor with declining population (Japan Italy etc has slow decline in population whereas China will have all of a sudden halving of the population due to one child policy). A single American company like coca-cola or Apple or Pepsi or Microsoft or Google or RU-vid etc is still much much larger than any company in China.

But the top matter is the center point of the discussion -- West is losing its stand in the world. In one way - the way of rule of nature - it can happen. The other way - East and West - The question of leadership of world - East doesn't like or approve any ruling over them as guardian. So the challenge comes ! East is gradually taking its due roll in governing the world.

One definition of socialism is workers taking control the means of production in large established corporations. Worker co-ops essentially. But that worker owned and run company will still act like any capitalist company in the markets. And, if that company takes off big time, the workers owning the company will all become rich. And the company will be a big player politically because of its monetary power. Where do you go at that point? Another defintion of socialism is to replace markets with economic planning. We've had a number of examples of those in history and they all were a disaster. Personally, I think we can live with capitalism, but it must be a heavily regulated capitalism to address all of capitalism's inherent flaws and this can only be done in conjunction with a political system that is run by the power of the people not by the power of the rich. Good luck with that, unfortunately.

_"Where do you go at that point?"_ Imperialism. Ask Mondragon. They now have goods made in Vietnam, where the workers are not members of the co-operative.

The GDP discussion was really interesting, and I think one thing to keep in mind is that a lot of GDP in the US is really captured productivity from other countries, so if multipolarity leads to an inability to capture that, due to the increased sovereignty of the global south, the GDP in the US would take a major hit in proportion to that. GDP in the US is a direct result of imperialism, and for instance it's the ability to overpay the US service sector and distribution workers while underpaying foreign manufacturers. That moves the value from be accounted for in, say, Bangladesh's GDP for their extraordinary textile production and instead accounted for in the US service sector of the brands that sell them, and that profit then moves through circuits of financial capital and supports the massive speculation we see there. That's why manufacturing is important, and primary, relative to other sectors. That's the vital insight of Marx, to not get lost in the circuits of capital that we don't see that the source of value in a capitalist economy is productive labor, and manufacturing is the most important sector of productive labor.

Enough Ms Desai. Youre too old to comprehend global geopolitical situations. Please retire and let younger, more energetic and knowledgeable academics take over.

Global Hunger Index 2023-(Total 125 nations): Nepal:69 China: Below 20 SriLanka: 60 Bangladesh: 81 Pakistan: 102 India: 111 (severe) India can't feed its people. And the rising population which is young will add more to the pool. Indian government must stop encouraging the mass migration of Indians from Bihar, UP, Madras, South India and so on in to Nepal. Bihari Indians are not native to Nepal as falsely believed by many Indians and as promoted by the Indian government. Only indigenous "Tharu" are natives in Terai just like the aborigines of Australia with their own distinct ways and culture. The citizenships act is still a debate for Nepalese folks as it was done against their will.
