Radiant Quests Kinda Suck

Named after Bethesda's Radiant AI, Radiant Quests are a gameplay mechanic designed to artificially increase the length of a game. They're infinitely repeatable and simple quests that the player can endlessly complete in exchange for some meager rewards. However, I am of the opinion that Radiant Quests just aren't that great. Here's how they can be fixed. Radiant Quests kinda suck, but here's how to fix them.

I think a morale boost for your settlers would be a good reward, maybe make them gather double for a week... or have them wash their hands so they stop complaining about their fingernails.

The thing about Radiant quests is that they are fine so long as there is still enough specialized content to go with them. The Radiant quests should represent the mundane every day tasks you have to do or to provide content once you have completed all other content within a given faction/group. The issue is once they take the place of unique quests.

I wouldn't mind them so much if they weren't tied so closesly to the main quests or factions, like i get a radiant quest from a random NPC in a town is fine, being 85% of the minutemen quests is NOT.
@TY-km8hj
@TY-km8hj 3 месяца назад
I think that's everyone's biggest issue. The minuteman are there to rebuild and police and yet we don't really do that. We just rebuild settlements, take the castle, destroy the institute if we even choose to do it with the minuteman and then that's it. No true quests that further their goals or help u learn more about the organisation. They're not even really a faction if we're being honest.

It's funny, cause they did have the milestone rewards system in Skyrim's Thieves guild. You had to do a certain number of radiant quests to build up the guild. It was Great and made me want to do more. Its how you actually become guild master.

Skyrim had good and bad examples of radiant quests The worst offender in my opinion was the Companions having a filler radiant quests between main quests, and while the Thieves Guild was a good example(side quests that also counted for restoring the guild) the fact the milestones were per city and only worked for 4 out of 9 cities what a lot of people did was abandoning the quests and picking them again until they got the city they wanted and if we didnt had that option people would hate it a lot, having a total mission milestone would have been better.

a big fix would be that Preston Garvey dont automatic give you new quests, instead you get them when you ask for one. It would be great fix. Also let kill missions have higher chans to spawn legendary enemies/bosses would be awesome and some rescue missions may give you new settlers you can send to any settlement you want. This settlers can be ex gunners, runaway synths, traders and other settlers with different skills.

I’m cool with radiant quests if they have some value. The Skyrim radiant quests can help you find new dungeons(like the shout quests, for example). F4 can be useful if you want to increase a companion’s affinity. The EXP and caps are a small bonus too. I just wish Preston wasn’t the quest giver. He’s an interesting character but it’s a shame that he was so bugged on launch. Plus, his companion perk is pretty good too.

Some of the solutions you mentioned for radiant quests like better rewards and more difficult quests were implemented into Fallout 76. Instead of just getting caps and XP, certain radiant quests and events in 76 can give you certain items like plans and legendary weapons. If you're trying to get flux to craft Ultracite ammo, do the Scorchbeast Queen fight and get flux as a reward. Fallout 76 radiants aren't perfect, but they're an improvement to what we got in Fallout 4.

I don't think it's about the rewards. Fallout has never been known for its smart, well-designed rewards. Fallout 1 for destroying a group of super mutants gives access to the refrigerator as a reward... In food where food is not needed. Simply because the old developers didn't believe that bad guys could give a good reward. In Fallout 2, the slavery was not radiant, like in Fallout 3, so after several successful raids, the hero loses his earnings and remains with a social debuff for the entire game. In Fallout 3, selling random junk is much more profitable than renting artifacts from pre-war times to collectors. And finally, the worst example is Fallout New Vegas. Most quests only give XP. Yes, the player gets endings, influences the fate of the state, etc. But gameplaywise, the player receives nothing, but XP. However, the game is so good that most people don't even notice it. Fallout 4 has a pretty lazy story, spinning tiresome tropes about "Androids are people too?" and "MC on a quest to find/avenge relative". Accordingly, it is difficult to build interesting and compelling factions around this story that you would want to root for. And even if you want, you won’t be able to populate the wasteland with Minutemen, Railroad agents, the Brotherhood of Steel or the Institute without mods. Only random settlers, no dialogues and no backstory. This has always been my pet peeve. I would rather build settlements for Sorrows from Honest Hearts, although dislike tribes. But the idea of building a settlement for savages who cannot explore the wasteland because of “taboo places” is much more interesting than helping random vagabonds. P.S. Fallout 1 and 2 provided radiant content, but in very small doses and only in routine activities like guarding caravans, raiding slaves, and cleaning up Brahmin dung.
@yorther
@yorther 3 месяца назад
One point I don't see is that for survival, the minutemen radiant quests help a lot as having settlements to go to around the wasteland as a way to rest and gather materials helps a lot, offering a reward. However in survival, even that reward doesn't feel like enough and feels like a constant struggle and battle..

One annoying thing about the Minutemen is that, after you get the Castle and the artillery, there are no further upgrades for the faction or its members. It would be really cool if you had the option to upgrade their gear by raiding the Gunners (or retaking Quincy and getting revenge), or by taking stuff from the Institute or the Brotherhood of Steel. It would've been fun to turn the Minutemen, piece by piece, into a serious military.

The only benefit that Radiant Quests have is that they encourage you to potentially go to new locations; however, I think there is no bias placed on if you have been somewhere before. So, it fails at that. I think the Radiant AI can live without the quest part of the system. Also, in vanilla Skyrim, it would sometimes bug out, which means you are screwed if you are not on PC.

I think a system like in the original fallout, and the ability to go with the Crimson Caravan on a delivery would be really good for fallout 4 specifically. Especially with how much Bunker Hill is played up as a hub of trading it’s very lackluster when you get there and the ability to say that you are a caravan when you first get there would work well for it. It’ll be a good radiant quest with raiders trying to pillage it as it’s moving along. The only complaint would be npc path finding and an abysmally slow movement speed

This settlement were all the inhabitants are equipped with high powered automatic weapons and clothing that protects better than combat armor. Preston : (still, somehow, sincere) : Yes, General, and if you don't do something about it stuff will somehow get broken and that settlement's happiness will suffer. SS : That pack is closer to were most of my other companions are than where we are; can't I just radio Piper with the Pip-Boy I gave her then have her and Strong go clear that pack out? Going forward, I would like Radiant Quests to be able to be performed by your settlers/minutemen/npc underlings. For example, in FO4, you have the Minute Men, and the player is the general, so why is the general going to do the quests. The general gives the orders to the subordinates to handle. Maybe have a platoon or similar of minute men, brotherhood of steel, vault dwellers, robots, etc that you can equip with all your items you find but never use, and have them go do the quests, and while they are off screen, the rng plays it out and they come back later with loot for you, and you just pick and choose what to do with it. They already had the 'help defend settlement under attack' quests that randomly pop up and then if you ignore them, you get a notification that is was either successfully defended, or not successfully defended, so why not in future games have the settlers or minions be able to go out and do the radiant quests for you and the things they bring back go towards bettering the settlement.

There's a Skyrim mod that gets this system right, IMO. Missives is honestly a pretty fun little mod, you just go to a job board, pick from a list of jobs, do them and get the specified reward, most of these have some sort of time limit to them as well. The reasons this work for me are as follows: 1. You know exactly what you're getting into, the task, reward, and time limit are all spelled out for you, you aren't expecting a fully written quest when taking a missive. 2. You can often complete these quests on the way to do other written quests, or while making runs between two cities. 3. The time limit adds a sense of urgency, you usually have plenty of time to get the job done, but you do need to manage your time wisely. 4. This isn't required content at all, no major reward is locked behind these quests, you can choose to ignore them and all you're missing out on is some gold. 5. It makes the world more believable, the existence of these job boards suggest you're not the *only* adventurer out there.

I think the settlement system could have been salvaged had the developers knew they were going to release a survival mode that removed fast travel and that people would have loved it. They could have reduced the overall world space a bit, and created more interior locations first of all, and then built the system on top of enhancing the experience of running around the world. Instead of having Preston radio that a settlement needed help, it would be something you could engage in yourself to unlock "Radiant Points" that would operate as your "Reputation" among your own settlement. Once there was a point system in place, you could have something like "1 point" to have settlers go to a nearby location you've already cleared and transfer every junk item to your inventory. For three points you will get to take a few with you on a mission. They can die and that's a bummer, though. For five points you can create an "outpost" a certain range away from your existing settlement or another outpost, and with the requisite "Defense" score built, one or two settlers would take up guard posts at the outpost and settlers would occasionally walk back and forth between them. This would replace the fairly rudimentary trade route system, and make clearing, establishing and defending these trails a part of the gameplay that could theoretically go on forever or until you'd "settled" every last inch of the map (there's ways to solve that, too) without demanding the players attention and making the rewards wholly different from unique items, caps, and XP associated with traditional quest/reward systems.

They also seem to all have a flat XP earning, depending on your intelligence of course, of around 210, at least that´s all I ever get without chems or additional INT on armor etc.. I think the main problem with radiant quests in any Fallout game is that they don't have any real impact. I could spend 1,000 hours doing quests for my settlements that have a maximum population, happiness, food, water and security and they would still find me some ghoul infested sewer to clear out. Fallout games are all about choices and consequences - that's why we have the ending slides. And radiant quests don't provide that. It's just more content slop for the content trough.

I hate them because a quest is an adventure. As with all things, they can be fixed by consulting the actual definition of the word. (In this case Quest as a noun) Mandates an Adventure, a Journery or an Expedition. Fetch X or kill X is not a quest. It is a simple task, a job even. The Companions questline felt like it was mostly random crap (And rushed, and shrimpy, and largely shallow, but eh), the Minutemen are barely a proper questline, the Railroad are maybe half random, the BOS has at least justifiably random quests (Say, "fetch thing we found out about" or "purge area")... Do it to all of them, and you don't get that recurring quest anymore. Then the people that don't like it at all can get rid of it by maxing the defenses. Honestly, they shouldn't need your help anymore then.

Maybe any bartender could have a chance of offering a rumor of a special item at a certain location, similar to the “scavenger notes” you can find. Travis could even broadcast new quest targets, similar to the way Radio Freedom does. There are many ways to implement improved quests. Improving the rewards is only one aspect that would be welcomed by players.

Radiant quests can be interesting but you have to a) not have quest markers and b) have alternative paths that use different skills and reward exploration

They have the perfect radiant quest rewards, and they don’t use them: legendary weapons. Make them give a legendary weapon from a table of base weapons that fit the faction.

Radiant quests could be good. A bounty system which the player chooses to participate in is one example. But Bethesda's quests are mostly terrible. If you play the mods Darlene and Heather, you get a better idea of what they should have done, and if it was too much work, they could have sold quests separately - which is what they kinda did with CC but the quests are mostly forgettable. Imagine buying quest lines as expansion packs. We could have setup a police network that handles kidnappings etc, we could have permanently eliminated the gunners, or combined the tech from Cabot, the UFO, the Institute, Acadia, the scientists of brotherhood, diamond city and vaults, and cured feralization. Sure, modders did all those things for free, but imagine if Bethesda was replaced by a competent team that fixed bugs. Wow. One that introduced precombine creation and terrain alterations into the editor. Sorry, my tears at what could have been shorted out my phone for a while. Radiant quests are so hated that a lot of modders devoted weeks or even months to stopping them. They are anti-content - they make you regret buying the game. I include base attacks here. Having monsters repeatedly attack, only to die regardless because you set up good defenses - but the game fails you if you don't drop everything and travel a thousand miles so you can JUST STAND THERE.. Argh. Stuff like this is why I stopped buying Bethesda and don't recommend fallout 4 as a game.

So I havent seen anyone mention this, but fallout 3 did this perfectly fine by only having a few things different. +They were NOT logged in your pip-boy -This removed log clutter and the ugh... I have to clean this out mindset. -This made the requests feel more freeform and something extra and not a checklist task. -This removed the highly specific item and location to complete it. -That allowed for more freedom in acquisition. Stealing, scrounging, buying for 5 caps selling for 15. I.E.: You dont have to collect a specificly marked box of sugar bombs on the third shelve from the right after enetering the far harbor bowling alley. You just need _any_ box of it. (Especially the reselling is something I personally liked) +You DIDN'T have to keep returning to the quest giver to ask permission to do it again. -This also made it feel more natural and freeform. -This allowed the quests to become a background thought when you're looting, NOT a priority. -This allowed you to collect multiple of whatever the client wanted in one go. -This in turn makes turning in your large collection in one go more satisfying because of the bigger pay out in one go. Fallout 3 just has certain people tell you that if you're selling they're buying. No commitments or quests. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Examples of the things youaksed to collect are: (most rewards are caps and xp sometimes its different) Scrap metal (Multiple people want this) Pre-War Books Sugar Bombs Brotherhood dog tags Cameras Sensor modules Energy weapons Ant glands Nuka-Cola Nuka-Quantem(this is an actual quest log quest up to 30 bottles; after that you can still continue, but it becomes an unmarked quest) Fingers (killing raiders and other scum will give you this) Ears (Killing good people; Evil playthough) Mutantblood (Killing any Super Mutant) Scouting (Discovering locations) And maybe some more that I missed ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bethesda already created a good and immersive system, but they just threw it out the window and used the current fuck up. Oddballs

"Kinda" They're one of the driving forces behind the decline of BGS games. Before Skyrim, you had a high standard of quest variety. After Skyrim and even partially in the game itself, you have a significant dropoff in quests you even remember doing. How many quests from a single guild in Morrowind or Oblivion are memorable versus how many in the entirety of Skyrim? Even the lesser guilds like the Morrowind Vampires or the Oblivion Fighter's Guild at least have a few interesting things to do. Even in the major guilds, Skyrim's quests are largely forgettable, but despite this they're mostly better than the games that came after. Unless you count redundant ones, like each final battle quest, individually, are there even quests worth doing in Fallout 4 vanilla?

America Rising 2 and Sim Settlements 2 handled Radiant Quests better like the Enclave Eyebot quest giving you a Eyebot Companion and do more gives the SID (Eyebot) upgrades that are also references to EDE upgrades. Sim Settlements in general, makes settlements in general more interesting and with some story in the case of Sim Settlements 2. Not only that but you feel like you’re rebuilding and defending the Commonwealth. And that’s just Fallout 4, Skyrim has tons as well like Missives and Headhunter.

The problem with radiant quests boil down to a problem with design philosophy. Bethesda WANTS content that can be played forever. However, Bethesda NEEDS content people want to play forever.

as a filthy 76 apologist, they did repeatable quests so right. most of them offer unique rewards, sweetwater gives you perception boosting tea after gathering honey, they all have a chance to give unique plans which there are like a billion of, even if you might not use metal armour ultra light mods but it’s still a new thing to have, or you can sell it or just give it to new players, some of them boost faction reputation, they all give you caps and xp as well as stimpaks, radaway and sometimes good weapons and ammo depending on how hard the quest is. there’s also a lot of unique ones around the map to do, gathering items and killing enemies takes up a good chunk of them yes, but there’s also tracking down and shooting certain animals with a syringer and tailing/surviving long enough to gather data on them, some really tough dungeons in the daily ops etc

Ngl your videos content sometimes feel like a “radiant quest” the way you repeat the same things in a video 2-4 times. I get you’re likely trying to just extend run time but man, it can get tiring to listen to as a long time subscriber. Still good work over all, but it’s just been on my mind for a while.

How about some more variety in radiant quests? It's usually the same 4, just changing the names. Change it up. Maybe help establish a new government. Settle a dispute between settlements. And so on...

10:05 but that's already the reality. The milestone rewards for doing the Minutemen radiant quests are indeed in the game and are pretty big - do 1 radiant quest and you get Preston as a companion and Minutemen are unlocked as a Power Armor paint and as a flag. Do more (I think it was 5) and you unlock the Castle quest which can give you unique items like the Last Minute and artillery. Do even more (I think it was 8) and you unlock the option to defeat the Institute using the Minutemen. Same goes for almost every other faction - you get Ballistic Weave by doing Rail Road radiant quest. You unlock the Lost Patrol quest (and the legendary T-60 piece locked behind it) after completing some BoS radiant quests etc.

What I want to know is how at 10:34 is the deathclaw in the basement of Kendall Hospital already active? I always need to drop down to the basement to spawn it and on survival that is most times a dead sentence.

radiant quests are one of those things that can be used well if done right. Problem is fallout 4 does not do them right and its the main thing to do if you want a minutemen playthrough its best as side content or a way of getting more stuff like in skyrim, where i think its done far better
