The Radical Honesty movement is a somewhat recent subculture, emerging in the mid 1990s thanks to the efforts of psychotherapist Brad Blanton. The movement seeks to improve peoples' (and others') lives through having them only say the truth and nothing but it. There have been claims raised by former members of the group's cult-like behavior - like with a lot of self-help groups - but such claims haven't really hurt those who are trying to be honest no matter what. Just to add to this honesty pile-up, I did not write this script! So lets see what happens when you give me an energy drink and a two page paper on a self help group in this week's episode of Subculture Shock.
Disclaimer (because one isn't enough): We are not a group of professional researchers, at best we're people interested in the world around them and college students. We encourage all out viewers to use these videos as a stepping-stone to introduce themselves to whatever subculture the video above covers.
Thank you again Mr. Scott for writing this video while I was out of the office.
Legal disclaimer - The views brought up by the former members of radical honesty towards Radical Honesty and Dr. Blanton do not reflect those of this channel. Our purpose within including such accusations is to display a broader picture of this and similar self-help groups. We advise all viewers (as we usually do) to use a video such as this as a starting point into their own research on the discussed group. Any and all claims of cult-like behaviors are played for humor outside of relaying those claims from several sources as part of the criticism section of this video.

Well I am at a point in my life where I can no longer keep what I see in my head, especially if it’s abuse or neglect of any kind!!! The problem I confront every single time is this; I see a child being abused in my circle of friends I agonize over the best way to come out with the truth where the child should be the focus, but every adult turns it into being about them and what a horrible friend I am a traitor to the friendship, how dare I give advice when not asked, how dare I judge the adult, how dare ‘I’ point out that a child is being abused or neglected. It then becomes about me and the way I’m living. I know why though. It won’t stop me from telling the truth when it comes to kids, it just blows my mind that in the end the adults put there feelings ahead of the kids

I know someone who is into this nonsense and they sure do talk up how radically honest they are in their life. Of all the people I know, they are in fact the least honest person I know and get cripplingly hurt by honest critique of their dodgy behaviors.

Ha! Cool video. I'm referenced, thanks. I'd like to suggest to include John Hunter's PhD work that might explain why 90% of participants after such intense trainings report life-changing impact. Also to check whether it is legal in the state of Virginia to call yourself a psychotherapist when you don't have a license. Brad doesn't. Also, there is an interesting read about the Human Potential Movement (HPM) from which Brad developed RH that described Fritz Perls behavior and his legacy that can still be seen in these groups nowadays. Enjoy!

You are literally the first person we have referenced to watch our content (to my knowledge) and it feels like an honor to actually get feedback from a source. Thank you! I'll pass along what all was said to Scott (who wrote 99% of this episode) if he hasn't seen this comment already, and will update our sources document to include Hunter's work and some stuff on the HPM.

Is that Dave Van Ronk?

It is indeed the face of the late Dave Van Ronk - funnily enough, he and Mr. Scott hold a good amount of resemblance to each other; until he shaves his goatee
