Radio Antenna Maintenance
We're having a lovely stretch of weather here in New Jersey, so it's a good opportunity for some long-overdue antenna maintenance. Here's a bit of me pulling down and cleaning up my old wire antenna in preparation for a new installation.

I would have thought you would go from the house gutter to the radio then to the city's plumbing system

Dear DX friend Tom, thank you for the video. We have in Europe equal weather but sometimes with a hard wind or a partial rain. In my location nothing with snow or in such a way, so good conditions for some work. Wishing you best reception, fr. Klaus

Congratulations...excellent antenna...I used mono/single 3,5mm cable for ShortWave. We Live in a 8.storey of 12 storey apartman block. Altitute of the apartment is 900m. I wrapped/rotated the cable around and out of the 8.storey. I took full result by way of this method. It provides strong signals. For medium wave I cant find ant DIY solution. For MW I use Tecsun loop antenna. Your radios are excellent, especially Panasonic.

Yes a good antenna on a mediocre radio is better than the other way around.Remember though thats only as good as the coax in between. You are right to get your antenna up as high as possible.I have heard it said that because of the way sw signals travel it doesn't matter where you live.I don't believe this as i have lived at sea level and on high ground.I found high ground much better.Enjoyable vid wish i was there to help love playing with antennas.Looks like you are using steel wire copper is much better.Have fun👍🤗

Hi! What is the 9:1 "un-un" transformer? I am new to this.

Man, from the looks of the size of your yard, you could have your own DExpedition without leaving home!! Your surroundings up there are so peaceful looking!! It looks like it is out in the country side.....and that is really nice. I would be interested in more specifics about the antenna set up you use. Do you recall where you bought your Un-Un and who the manufacturer was? The PVC housing looks durable, as well as the mounting hardware, and something that can be waterproofed fairly easily with silicon. With the Un-Un, some element wire and a length of coax, to get me into the house, I'd be in business!! Been using a Tecsun PL-880, so would need to get a reducer from whatever coax I used to the 3/8" antenna jack. Would appreciate any input. Tnx.......& 73's!! Keep those videos coming, RD!! Hi John, thanks for the comment! I'm using a wide-angle lens in this video, so it makes everything look super big, but yes, I am blessed to live in a lovely area. I am posting the re-installation video tomorrow, which includes some links for some of the components. Hopefully, that will be helpful. 73, Tom

I also have an inverted L sloper. but my wire is insulated. Is it better to have bare wire ?

I don't believe it makes any difference.

Nick, my random wire antennas are all insulated and work reasonably well.

3 or 4 years? There was only one day between publishing dates. I'm feeling confused. You had me thinking I was crazy. I was like the guy only put the antenna up yesterday.

Ha! Pulled it down one day, and put it back up the next. Sorry for the confusion!

? What is the difference in using an 9-1 unun vs just hooking wire to center conductor of coax. Thanks in advance

That's a good question. Someone with the tech smarts will probably chime in on this and articulate it better. I think it has to do with the impedance match. Simply connecting a long wire (high impedance) to coax (low impedance) is mismatched; the unun matches the impedance of wire and coax for much better performance.

Looks like a pretty elaborate set-up, Tom. I like the Jeremiah Johnson approach to your recent radio videos in the great outdoors :-)

time 10:10 ''silicone sealant.'' -- You want to avoid that at all costs. Most silicone have acid in them , and it east copper. There are some low acidic silicone , but they are not so common ,, and some that are advertised as low acid silicone aren't silicone at all. Basically, if you have your silicone and it has that eye watering smell to it ,,, keep it away from wire and cables connectors.

Thanks, Greg. I didn't know that...it just made sense at the moment. Are there other types of sealants that would work? I thought it would be helpful to recommend something relatively easy to get locally.

@@Radiodog Many guys try silicone , and when they come back several months later to have a look they find it all eaten away and green , and think 'WTF is going on here' :-) There are special on-conductive greases sold by radio shops for this job , but they are not that cheap. You can try standard Vaseline in coaxial plug/sockets ,, apparently it works but I have never tried it. Permatex 22058 Dielectric Tune-Up Grease is about 7 dollars a tube ,, but have never tried it. Maybe even non hardening bathroom calking might work ???? maybe ???? that should be water resistant , but a hell of a mess to clean up during service time. To use greases you goop it everywhere inside the plug/socket and screw it together forcing all the excess ooze out , with the plan to take away all the air pockets inside. No air = no corrosion. The secret with battling rain and snow is either to seal it up 100% , OR make it self draining 100% ,, having it half and half just creates a water trap , and a problem.
