In this session, Ken ‘hiwatt’ Marshall exposes a SECRET WEAPON that you can use in your productions today. Ken shares his technique of using gated radios as a creative sound source, both on stage and in the studio…
WOLVES RUN HERE, THANK YOU!*!*! With support like yours there is literally no limit to the sessions we can share! Occult madness...I love it!!! If you’re producing music, I encourage you to leave your own experiences here and/or share a topic that we can cover in a weekly session!!! Thank you for your comment WRH, I appreciate it ;-))
Holy shit this explains so much of how that specific effect is made! It doesn't even have to be radio, can be another track/song you like or made, mixes you prepare for it! This is so good!
Why am I only finding this now?! This is amazing, I'm gonna record some stations from my 1970 radio and use it in a breakcore project. Big up from Bristol, your channel is really underrated - your work is fantastic!
One of the best tools that I found for getting strange sounds to use this method on is internet shortwave radio. You'd be amazed at some of the strange sounds that you can dial in. There's dial up-modem type sounds, strange bursts of static, numbers stations, people talking about random stuff, as well as music stations from other countries. And the internet shortwave radios that are out there that you can access through your browser also 99% of the time have a "Record" button somewhere in there so you can just record what you want and download the file.
Skinny Puppy has been in my top three favorite bands since I got a hold of Bites way, way back when. Thank you. This is utterly priceless. I even have Too Dark Park tattooed on my leg.
Wow! Super neat trick! Another fun one is to use things like Radio/noise as the gate trigger for pads/drones to give the 'broken/glitchy signal wire' effect. Super addicted to your channel now, keep the content coming!! Been SP junkie since 88 and love to hear your take on things!
Thanks ken, you are a genius. I was lucky enough to finally meet you in Atlanta at the Masquerade in 2017. Ohgr and Kmfdm. You ran the sound board, and I got to say hello and just a few things in between those sets. You're one of the coolest and nicest sound guys I've ever met....thanks so much for doing these session videos and for being you.
This is such a cool insight into some history and music I love! Thank you so much! I just got done setting this up & I'm really excited to keep playing with this... I feel like a glitch bazooka just got added to my musical arsenal! Keep 'em coming Ken, these tips are golden!
Pac MUle!!! I love that you’ve created your own template, I have this huge smile on my face cause I know you prolly went MIA for a couple of days haha! Thank you PAC MUle, I appreciate your comment SO much my friend. Please share your experience back here, I wanna hear! BOOM haha, good handle btw, ‘glitch bazooka’ lmao ;-)
Cool idea! I recently got an Akai MPC One, and I'm trying to figure out how to do this on there, but the gate settings are not obvious. I'll keep plucking away at it, and hope it's possible! If not, that's fine. I am really enjoying this little box as it is, and trying to take in little bits of your advice while I work on some songs. It's really nice to be making electronic music again, and the workflow and capabilities of this thing blow my previous gear out of the water!
WOLVES RUN HERE !!! Thank you SO MUCH, I’m having a blast making these sessions and your encouraging comments are pure motivation for so many more, thank you!!!
That's cool I recorded a bunch of radio stations on my phone. But I would record the station frequency that was right before or right after. So the radio recording would have an overlay of static noise dubbed into the music. But I never thought of triggering the recording with drums... That really cool. I don't use protools though, I use propeller heads reason. So I'm not sure if I can do something similar, I'd have to check... But they're all single recordings just me switching from one radio frequency to another and recording the noise. I might try it out... See what I can do.
Thank you for this!🙏 please share more stories like this one? Thank you!✋✌ it actually reminds me a lot of the live "ain't it dead yet?" Dave "Rave" era
Hey Ken, this is by far one of my favorite production technique videos on youtube. Would you consider doing more videos on sound design and experimenting in the studio? "Weird stuff that sounds unexpectedly cool" is a big theme around my studio, especially when working with old hardware, so I'd be curious to hear more of your experiences along those lines. Listening to the albums you worked on in the 90s is actually what inspired me to choose sound design and engineering as a main career, so these little gems of wisdom are a real treat.
CBC and LG73 radio samples never sounded to good in the 90's Thank you for sharing this technique as I always kinda wondered what was up with that randomness Also surprised you didn't just use an old 4track multi tracker to drive loops into the gate but this is great info right here
ApexDuBB you’re right haha, LG73...epic!!! Still love our CBC too ;-) Thank you for sharing! That 3U radiobox was some crazy kinda 4-track lol! That’s a great idea, imagine the random results from playing old demos, etc. Plus you’d have pitch control...and you could even play the tapes backwards haha, I’m ALL IN!!! Maybe a new build in our future... Cheers ApexDuBB, thanks again ;-)
That's so cool. An endless source of sounds to manipulate further. Radio is cool. I sat for hours in front of transistor radio and tuned them. What fun. Is the SP "we got the taste" sample the result of your radio gator rigs?
This is great Ken, I'm a long time SP fan. To be honest they were the reason I started writing music. I studied the credits and always remembered who was producing and mixing so when I saw you had a channel I was elated. I do a lot with recording "controlled chaos" and this video hits the mark for me. Please post more of these inspiration tips and techniques. I am diving into vocoders because of your videos!!
Oh boy, I'm not a hoarder BUT I do have a couple boxes full of old cassettes and VHS tapes that I recorded from radio and TV in the 80's and 90's that would be PERFECT for this technique. Question: is it worth going to the trouble to "tune" any of it so it's in key with the song?
