Radio interference from a heated rear window - How to test

We diagnose a radio interference fault on this Jaguar XJ - it's a confirmed fix BUT what critical tests did I carry out that are not in the video? What assumptions did I make in the video based on evidence gathered in the video that saved me from extra tests that would have been done for the sake of just testing?

The antenna amplifier will not likely be the fault. You see on the thermal image, there is a dead area in the actual heating. Focus on that, there will be a microscopic scratch in the conductive painted trace that isn't heating. If you go along with the thermal camera, you may see one tiny pinpoint on the trace which is getting warm. There's your problem lady! What's happening is current is actually arcing across that microscopic scratch and while doing so is creating broadband RF noise which is swamping the antenna amplifier. Same can also happen when the vehicle uses a roof antenna, but to a lesser extent because it's not directly coupled in. So you can: 1. Get the conductive silver paint out and patch it up, restoring both heating trace and removing interference 2. Replace the rear window 3. Make the scratch wider so it can't arc across!!! Obviously my recommendation is 1. Done it many times for this fault

You’re absolutely right. I had a Golf -2016 with the same symptom with some warmer areas in the heating trace after a new window had been installed. I substituted the heating trace with a couple of lightsbulbs matching the the current draw of 20 Amps and bingo, the interference was gone. The window was replaced “again” and no more problem! 😊👌🏼

Good findings Steve, you didn't had any breaks or hot spots in top portion of the screen where both antenna sits so it had to be amplifier. Good info. Thank you.

Just got to get this off my chest, I have been in the trade since 1988 I have been a master tech for the last 15 years for a German manufacturer now I love diagnostics but hate working in toxic dealership environment's where everything is bonus and all diagnostic must be carried out under warranty guidelines using automatic test plans sticking strictly to manufacturers methods. So to see the freedom you have to carry out diag without all the hassle of dealership restrictions is a true joy to watch and you have actually inspired me to enjoying my job again. This is my bread and butter work and it goes unnoticed in dealerships fixing electrical issues etc using skills taught to me not by manufacturers training but by other good technicians and self learning so I say thank you its a lonely world in dealers when your interested in actually fixing things and not rinsing bonus.

I would put money on the rear windscreen being your issue. Had a 2013 Superb estate with the same issue. Heated rear window engaged and would loose DAB signal and if on an FM station signal would be distorted. Happened to have a friend with a Passat estate that had the same setup. Swapped antenna amp from his as it was the same part and the issue remained. Had the rear windscreen replaced and the issue was resolved. Interestingly the break in the elements wasn’t in any of the ones connected to the amplifier either.

Interesting Steve how they route the rear defogger into the am/fm amplifier for the antenna. Always good stuff to know. Don't know why RU-vid is showing that I'm unsubscribed, but I'm subscribed again. Keep up the good work and hoping you and your family have a blessed 2021.

Another great video Steve 👍🏻 Have you noticed that on Pico 7 when set on a five second time base . When it refreshes to the next page you can’t go back to your existing page where Pico 6 you can . The only way I can get it to save more pages is by lowering the sample rate 🤔 . Any ideas would be great please . Thanks Steve Your Awesome 😄😁👍🏻

I've had that happen when there is an update, it's still a beta. I either increase or decrease my screen time. I've also had it on 200ms/div. In my case it's probably operator error as I don't normally pay much heed to settings, I used to spend too long faffing about trying to grab the "perfect waveform" but now I just adjust until I fill the screen with the info I need.

interesting. radio can be a lot of fun because it can come from the power side or it an be picked up by the antenna. was that on an am or fm mode. am(amplitude modulation) can pick up loose connections elsewhere in the vehicle or even nearby.(florescent and metal arc lights ) fm(frequency modulation) the frequency needs to match either the tuned or the radios if frequency band to be picked up. since it was the window heat that would not likely be am band. since the amplifier has those frequencies that match it would be logical that there was an internal problem. sometimes the amplified antenna is shared with celluar communications which throws another curveball to consider. oh by the way the steering wheel is on the wrong side lol. thanx steve

Interesting one - have the same problem on my vag hatchback the issue on mine however was easier to diagnose its down to my two westies scratching the heating element trying to get out little furry s@#£s 🤣 good to see you back up and busy.
