Surface radios are normally things you get included in RTR cars and boats. They are normally functional, but always lack the features of your modern radio..... that is until now. This amazing MT12 from RadioMaster runs EdgeTX and comes in ELRS and 4-in-1 multi-protocol flavors - and it even has a nano module bay for supporting other protocols. Let's check this out.
This radio was kindly supplied by RadioMaster for review, so please consider using the following affiliate link if you'd like to check it out in more detail: www.radiomasterrc.com/product...
I also used the ER5V V2 receiver which you can see here www.radiomasterrc.com/product...

Very cool isn't it. You wouldn't believe how many terrible toy grade ground radios I've got. I never thought that the precision on them would be so bad

That's a cool radio. Especially the multiprotocol module compatibility in combination with EdgeTX. I DIYed something similar with a tiny multiprotocol module and an OLED screen for the great Flysky NB4 and other radios a while ago.

Amazing radio! Custom LEDs are a smart move, agree that the buttons could have some white paint in the letters for readability. Probably the easiest mod in the world with a paint marker like people use to paint sides of CF frames, just wipe off excess with IPA

Ah, good idea. 40 years ago I was using tipex to paint in white on things, but a paint marker sounds like a plan!

I almost bought that radiolink with the big color screen(now I own a modified rc4gs), but I am so glad I didn't rush it :D Not that I'm going to use it a lot, but sometimes I just like to go for a walk with my dog and some rc truck :) With 4in1 version, I could use the radiolink receivers, that I already own.. and I also have ELRS nano, so I could try some of the new surface receivers. Great video... again!

I am actually new to cars. Have been flying fpv for a few years but have never set up headtracker before. would be cool to see your setups in edgetx for the camera panning. I am in the process of setting up a slash and just got a servo splitter to pan the camera as i turn. But i just ordered mt12 and excited to see what i can do with it.

That indeed would be great for speed runs as far as the distance but it’s just the opposite for the latency. It’s actually better to have very slow steering response at high speeds. You don’t not want sensitive steering going that fast. Guys actually turn down the end points as much as possible.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 месяцев назад
It's no hassle to put a rate in there. in fact, using EdgeTX and some telemetry it would be fairly simple to reduce the steering rate as the speed increased dynamically

I land speed race at Rossa and have been looking into Elrs and fpv. We are currently boosting the 2.4ghz signal with a 4w wifi booster. David holding the controller out is more A) latency B) psychological. I will get one of these on order. I just bought the Radiolink Rc8x that has the ability to talk to an Elrs module.I just need to do more reading on the fpv to aid me turning it around at 3000ft
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 месяцев назад
I'm happy to see you guys are thinking about these things. The wifi boosters were a thing in FPV around 8 years ago, but we essentially just moved on to better radios and different frequencies depending on the sort of goals we were aiming for. That said, being on the ground is quite different from being in the air. If you are sticking VTX's inside of cars and they are running at high output, then keeping them cool is a major factor, usually air flow does it for you, but in your case, I guess big heat sinks. at around 3000ft goof directional antenna pointing right at your car will be a must. It's an exciting thing to try though - good luck, and feel free to give me a ping if I can help.

I want to know if this (with the 4-in-1 module) will work with the Losi Promoto mx 1/4-scale motorcycle and, if so, how you would need to program it for that RC motorcycle. It would also be interesting to see if this motor cycle will work as well with a ELRS receiver but I doubt it as the receiver provides some stabilization functionality.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 месяцев назад
There's a Losi protocol listed in the Multiprotocol module (github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/blob/master/Protocols_Details.md#Losi---89) but I don't know if that covers what you have or not. If it was compatible, it's normally the case of just mapping the various inputs (i.e wheel, throttle, mode switch) to the correct channel - and then anything you might want on top, i'e dual rates, expo etc you'd just program in as you require

In case it helps someone else, mine had no sound, after hours of trying settings I contacted radiomaster and got this and it worked! ..........We found this problem, cover the SD card rubber cover, if the plug is too tight, the SD card will be a little deeper, resulting in poor contact with the SD card and can not play audio files, you can open the rubber cover, eject the SD card to reinsert, rubber cover SD card position do not press too tight, you can solve the problem.

Ah - thanks. I think I saw a comment from someone else about not having sound. I had this issue a week or 2 ago, where suddenly I had no sound. I just happened to eject and reinsert the SD card and it worked - but with this explanation, it makes a bit more sense

Do you have the fcc or lbt version? I live in the uk and have been told I should buy the lbt version, does this make any difference to what it will bind to? I want it to bind to the flysky fsgr3e receiver, a gent in the states has the fcc version and said it binds to this receiver, is it just the output power difference on fcc and lbt
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 4 месяца назад
I think I have the FCC version, but whether you are on ELRS or Multiprotocol, it shouldn't (I think make a difference) In the multiprotocol version (which I assume you are talking about) separate LBT and FCC protocols are implemented, so there is no version as such there, it's just a case of picking your protocol. I know the Multiprotocol module has LBT and FCC versions for FrSky, but I'm not sure about FlySky. If in doubt, consult the github page here github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module?tab=readme-ov-file

I am brand new to Fpv tech. I have never used edge Tx. I don’t understand the difference between the two models you can order or which one I should try. This video was great and so is radio master
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 месяцев назад
The difference between the 2 models is just about which internal module you get. The one I had used the ExpressLRS system, which is fantastic. Long range, low latency, cheap receivers. The 4-in-1 version uses a multiprotocol module that will let you bind to lots of different radio systems including all the big ones like Spektrum, Flysky, FrSky etc etc. However, with the module bay it means you could get the ELRS version and add a module for the 4-in-1 (as I did) of visa versa. It just depends what you want to primarily use it with. EdgeTX is simple once you get to know it - it can be a lerning curve for those that have come from more traditional radios as you can reprogram almost eveyr switch and function to do something else, and there's multiple ways of doing things. The good news is that there are a lot of good tutorials on EdgeTX (and OpenTX - which is almost identical in most ways)

Huh. I wrote to them a month ago asking them to make a 4-in-1 surface radio. They obviously well ahead of me. Pressing buy now.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 месяцев назад
I didn't think it would happen, it feels like the ground side of things aren't really taken seriously - which, given the much larger number of people playing with cars, is short sighted. I'm glad RadioMaster have seen the light :)

@@CurryKitten On thingiverse there is a 4-in-1 surface radio based on the zorro that looks quite good. I was choking on the price of a new zorro just to pull it apart for a speculative build, that may end up being awful. The MT12 makes this unnecessary and hopefully will be a lot better. ELRS surface radios already exist ( radiolink can connect to elrs/crossfire via an external module) but to use with existing cars I think a 4-in-1 is much more useful.

the problem at races will be output power. The FCC doc for the m17 says sanwa is running at like 10mw. If people come into a small warehouse blasting out 250mw we are going to have a problem.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 7 месяцев назад
This is more of a case of making sure people know what's what. It's a little like at FPV drone races, where everyone needs to make sure they are running at 25mw video to make sure nobody is blasting over each other. I've only flown with lots of 2.4 people before on varying levels of power without anyone having an issue - it would be interesting to see how much of an effect a higher power output had next to a small one, or how many people you need to have running on 2.4 before you start losing packets
@mouseFPV
@mouseFPV 7 месяцев назад
@@CurryKitten my thought is tracks are going to have to impose output power restrictions if this gets popular. because once people start getting blown out, you have an output power arms race which makes everything worse.
@ethrrr
@ethrrr 7 месяцев назад
@@mouseFPV at 2.4 I think it won't be an issue, there is plenty of bandwidth. I've had issues on 868.. And even if they are limited to 10mw, elrs is still fine.. and then, there are diversity receivers, gemini ..tons of options. Of course, I could not be 100% sure :))
