In this episode, which is part one of a two part series, I will demonstrate the methods and techniques for ascending a rope SRS (single rope system) using a RADS (Rapid Ascent Descent System) setup.
The RADS is a very popular method of ascending a single rope and it is used by rock climbers, rescuers, tree climbers, and alpinists, etc.Its popularity stems from how it makes use of gear that people in all of these disciplines of climbing usually already own and because it creates a mechanical advantage which increases the overall ease of climbing; especially when the climber has a long distance to ascend.
In this video, I show the viewer how to assemble a RADS and also the basic technique for ascending, how to make the gear changeover at the top, and how to descend using the belay device. If you are interested in creating your own RADS, here are all of the pieces of gear that you will be required to have and, in some cases, I’ll offer up recommendations in parentheses…
Hand ascender (Petzl Ascension) - With any hand ascender, you’ll have the choice of a left or right hand ascender. Typically you buy the one which corresponds to whichever one of your hands is dominant.
2 Oval Carabiners
Foot loop - You can buy these cheaply on Amazon or anywhere else. You can even make your own using rated accessory cord. I’d suggest no less than 7mm in diameter.
1 Pulley
Descender device - (Petzl GriGri)
Rope - I would recommend a static rope that is anywhere from 9mm-10mm. Thicker ropes are easier to hold onto and these particular diameters are ideal for use with the GriGri and will give the most control.
And that’s everything! Be sure to practice low and slow; low to the ground and take it slowly. Be deliberate in your actions and maintain a constant awareness of where all of your gear is and what it is doing. Practice going up several feet and then familiarize yourself with the descending mechanism on the GriGri.
And most importantly, have fun!

Dont understand why guys dont just use isc hand assender with pullley built in....less steps

Because I already own a hand ascender and a pulley. Why buy something I don't need? Just because the ISC hand ascender combines two elements doesn't make it better. Showing people how to use RADS with multiple elements is more applicable to most climbers in most situations.
