Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets have successfully landed on and taken off from a regular road for the first time. Two of the RAF’s frontline jets tested and proved the capability in Finland as part of Exercise Baana. The Finnish Air Force’s annual training exercise took place on a single-lane road in Tervo, which is usually used for normal road traffic.
For 52 weeks of the year the Strip is used as a public highway but during periods of training or in the event of conflict, it can be used as a fully operational runway as it is specially designed as an emergency landing strip to sustain aircraft activity if required.
As well as RAF Typhoons from RAF Coningsby, F/A-18 Hornet & F-35A Lightning II also exercised there dispersed location capability.
The RAF is focusing on ways to conduct Agile Combat Employment to outmanoeuvre an adversary - to survive an attack, disperse to remote locations and continue operating with minimal support.

I was at my summer cottage and these were roaring over all day long. 😅 probably was in less than 1km of altitude at that point.

It's not a single lane road, but a single carriage way with two opposite direction lanes. Doh!

That runway is almost as long as the list of allegations against Russell Brand .

This is risky as the Typhoon wasn't built for landing on roads. The F-18 was designed as naval carrier aircraft, so is appropriate for road landings. For example, look at the difference in undercarriage between the two.

Roads and runways are pretty similar, and they wouldn't have tried it without sign off from the relevant military engineering authority

We do not have suitable roads in the UK, far too many potholes (at least in Essex)! Don't think we have straight roads either. Shame that most of our bases are now housing estates!!

Autobahn -> baana
@Vapourized90
@Vapourized90 8 месяцев назад
@@julenalle Nope. "Bana" is road in swedish and Finland is bilingual country with swedish as second language. "Baana" is a derived slang word (Helsinki city slang) from "bana".

@@Vapourized90 Sure, closer to home. Might still have same etymology?

@@julenalle Swedish is part of the germanic language family, so yes in that sense, but Finnish is a finno-ugric language and this is a slang loanword from swedish.
