Steering loose even after replacing steering box and tie rods? It could be the Rag Joint/Steering Coupler. Replacing this part has never been easier with EHTV's instructional video. Everything Home TV Hosted By: Brian Domingo

After rebuilding my front-end steering took it in for alignment, only to find out this rag bushing is worn! DANG! Part ordered and was researching when I found yours. This was the most least expensive way to go and easy! Thanks for the video!

Thank You Brian. That was the most straight forward of all the RU-vids and lots of little hints to make it go better. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this.

No auto parts place around here is capable of finding this rag joint. Auto zone came close, by ordering me one for a Ford. Why are auto parts shops hiring kids who can’t help anyone? It’s mind boggling how I went to 8 places, and no one can help me find one. Unreal. That’s what I get for shopping my zip code.

i noticed my 76 f150 ragjoint is a lil loose, NOT AS LOOSE AS THIS ONE BUT UNDER PRESSURE OF STEERING WITH TRUCK OFF I CAN EASILY FORCE THE RAG-JOINT TO FLEX EITHER WY TO THE MECHANCIAL STOPPERS ON EITHER SIDE So is that worth fixing or wait till it gets much worse?
@Everythinghometv
@Everythinghometv Месяц назад
I don’t like to have much play in my steering, so I would replace it if it was mine and it was loose.

great video! Question: I've heard from a few people that the bolts that replace the rivets hang up on shaft parts--because they are thicker than the original rivets...did you run into that issue? I've been advised to grind down bolt heads by a 1/16th or so...any issues since install??
@Everythinghometv
@Everythinghometv 3 года назад
Did not have any issues with the bolts rubbing, I've probably put another 30 K miles on it and not one problem.....

Good video, but I would add two things: 1) it will take a hammer to budge both ends of the steering shaft apart. 2) when you put it back together, the steering wheel may be off, even though there is only one assembly position possible (both ends have flat spots that guide the assembly).
@LitwayJ

What straightens the steering wheel ? An alignment ?
@isaiahirish6501
@isaiahirish6501 2 года назад
@@LitwayJ no you have to pop the steering wheel off and realined on the splines of the actual inside steering shaft

all that work just to save a few pennies. why didnt you just get a full shaft replacement? all the ones they make now are quite a bit better than the stock one anyway
@mikelezan1023
@mikelezan1023 4 года назад
Few pennies? Full shafts are $215, rag joints are $30. Seems like a good savings to me. I did find some after market full joints for $85-$90 but why replace a part that is good? Not everyone has extra $$

I've got the exact same problem with my camaro, and this should straighten my steering wheen when I do this.
@Everythinghometv
@Everythinghometv 3 года назад
Unfortunately it won't work to straighten your stearing wheel. It can only go on one way because of the splines. If your stearing wheel is off take it to a shop and have them align your front end, make sure to tell them to make sure the stearing wheel is aligned too......
@mickjager5974
@mickjager5974 3 года назад
Is there a u-joint that could be used to replace that rather than with a rag joint? and if not thanks for letting us know that joint by itself can be found! A lot cheaper that the whole shaft assembly! And some auto parts stores sell a coupling repair kit that just has a new rubber piece, rag if you will, for like 10 bucks! part number 31002
@Everythinghometv
@Everythinghometv 3 года назад
If I remember correctly I think I saw something along those lines but it was much more expensive and since this was an old work truck we went the less expensive route.
@osi2484

The steering shaft that is inside the steering column is injected with plastic (part of the Energy Absorbing (EA) safety system). This injection is easily damaged by 'impact' or over stress on the steering shaft. The results from damage to the injections (not visible as they are located inside the steering column) weaken that Safety system. Steering column shaft to Lower shaft torque needs to be specified not just hand tightened.

Why isn’t my sterling wheel straight after I did this
@Everythinghometv
@Everythinghometv Год назад
The steering wheel and rag joint only goes on one way if the steering wheel is off by 1/4 turn or so it can be adjusted during a front end alignment. That’s what I had to do.

@@Everythinghometv thank you for the that info, fast response and a very detailed video! I wasn’t sure of my ability to successfully complete this project, especially with the grinding of the rivets.
