He's got something like ten different radio shows on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. I swear he's in love with the sound of his own voice and thinks he's the best. Most of the show is him just prattling on about some meaningless bullshit. It was cute when he'd have his elderly mom on, who died recently at almost a hundred years old, and my condolences to Tom for that. The weird thing was she seemed like she was wasn't even in the same room with him. She was this very old lady who seemed to me was very hard to understand and was obviously not all there. It seemed like an effort on someone's part to humanize Tom and it was awkward and cringey. Anyway, I think Tom is quite an innovative musician who had left a mark on rock n' roll, but the politics he espouses have killed something like 100 million since 1917, and I despise tyranny in all its forms. He seems like he'd be a nice guy to you, if you agree with him, but he's probably an elitist prick in all actuality.

@@whoami7721ughh and shamelessly plugging his own music like 4 times per show... Most of it crap. He doesn't even have a good voice for radio! I used to change the channel on the XM box at work every time he'd come on. What a hypocrite!

Man, I couldn't wait to see the comments section for this one. They've been bourgeois Bolsheviks since before they were in a band. Zach supposedly "grew up poor" in Irvine, California, one of the most affluent areas of Southern California, let alone the nation. His father was a renowned artist. Tom Morello's mother was a teacher and activist. He famously attended Harvard, the most prestigious college in the country. Not sure about Tim Commerford or Brad Wilk, but I remember reading how Commerford drove a custom Ford Explorer and lived in a beachfront house in Newport Beach. These guys lived like kings yet preached the Marxist teachings of Lenin and Mao and how the proletariat should rise up against the ruling class. What a bunch of fakes. Musically very innovative (for the early 1990s), but I could never really get past their strident socialist rhetoric. All the Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro idolizing really turned me off, and I couldn't understand what Zack was talking about sometimes. What the hell is a "five-sided fistagon"?

The way I see it now, is that it feels like entry level anarchy music. Anarchy is rad when you’re a kid cause you really didn’t understand the world yet so listening to “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” is like an anthem for a rebellious teen. I just can’t listen to it anymore without really cringing as well lmao. Though I think music is music and I think limp bizkit is just fun dumb music that is self aware of how cringey it is and that’s why it’s somewhat aged well. RATM really tries to put itself in a position of “you have to take us seriously” and that’s why political bands like Dead Kennedys and SOAD are great. They’re’s rebellion but there’s sarcasm and fun at the same time.

about che guevara, I think he´s a different symbol to different cultures. For us latin americans he represents the struggle to national sovereignty against US interference. So we actually don´t care if he was a good person or not (actually good guys don´t pick up guns, do guerrilla wars, fight the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and kick the american army off of their countries, bad guys do this, sometimes we need bad guys) . if he had woke liberal sensibility or didn´t, that is not important to what he was. What matters to latin america is that he represents the fight to our national sovereignty and self-determination. Che Guevara was around about the same time the USA staged coups all over latin america that resulted in the assasination of presidents in Chile and maybe Brazil, a lot of people died and we lived many decades under dictatorship that killed and tortured a lot of our people (I myself know elder people that went through prison and torture). This is why we don´t care if Che didn´t like gay people or if he was racist, I bet Henry Kissinger was just as racist or homophobe.

That was a great band…I remember an interview with Tom when Rage broke up in early 2000s. Tom was saying things like, “it’s nice to have a singer vs someone who raps…there’s more ability to branch out and do more things.” So seem like that period was really creative differences. I think we will see the three guys play going forward. It’s really on Zack and his solo stuff is usually non commercial, real low key dropped stuff…working with Run the Jewels and Trent Reznor. I just think Zack had no reason to be a public figure, has money in the bank and can focus on doing his own music…Rage probably is just stale for him and ran its course by early 2000s, they make up and do a reunion every 6-10 years for a few shows. But yeah, I bet Tom will still be doing his solo stuff…his need to play and be in the spotlight will always be there. The rest of the band seems down, and the band minus the singer has akways been active. So I bet we will see new stuff sooner than later!

Rage used to be so important to political activism around the world. I remember living in Greece as a teenager in the 90s. In 1995 the anarchists had a violent riot which ended up with them taking over one the universities in central Athens and having a standoff with police. Around 2-3 am when the energy levels had started to fall and the anarchists had been battered by tear gas and smoke they took over the university intercom system and started blasting RATM. The riots kicked off again shortly after.

Huff Po's article on Che is a total hit piece. The quotes from young, pre-revolutionary Che's ignorant comments it is the equivalent of finding someone's social media from like 20 years ago when they were in college. There are other plenty of other actions and comments which showed he no longer had those beliefs, including the fact that he traveled to Africa to help work with revolutionary movements there. It is absolutely fair to criticize the homophobia that had been present in the Cuban Revolution but there are two important points to remember, that in 1959, the 60s, the 70s, etc most of the world and systems planet-wide were not pro-lgbtq. Hell, even Dubya Bush was said to have won re-election based on making gay marriage a moral panic, and that's already a recent as this century in the USA. Point two, Cuba no longer had the anti-lgbtq stuff, and even Castro himself apologized and self-critiqued for that. I feel if Che had lived, he would have too. As far as the people Che executed, he did not tolerate it if his own forces committed abuses and rape, and he executed such people personally to send a clear message and discipline (compare that to how the US army deals, or rather doesn't deal with sexual assault against population being occupied or even with sex abuse among their own ranks). And as far as the overthrown regime of Batista, when Batista and his henchmen were brutalizing Cuba the future critics of Castro had been silent, but when those henchmen were put on trial for their atrocities and then found guilty and executed suddenly they objected at the "horror." And Che's philosophy was that those who lead the revolution should be the ones to carry out the executions, not force someone else to do the dirty work for them (compare this to the several consecutive US presidents having a kill list for assassinations in a drone war that kills 90% civilians). Every system on earth is going to have laws, and that leads to those who will defy those laws having to face legal retribution. Prison is a common feature for those people, regardless of the system. I'm sure that statistically there will undoubtedly be a percentage of those who have unjustly persecuted, but I don't think that means the majority of those imprisoned are likely innocent. To compare Che to Pol Pot because both said they were Communist would be like comparing George Washington to Pinochet because both were capitalist. And I have studied this stuff and when I look at Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge (who btw, the CIA supported at one point, long after the atrocities were known) I don't really see anything resembling communism or socialism, Marxism or Leninism in the content of their policies. Saying Pol Pot was an exemplar of Communism is an even bigger stretch than saying Jim Jones was following the teachings of Jesus. I actually think Finn should have a conversation with Zack, or really any number of people educated in the subject of Leftist politics, because these are conversations we are used to having all the time because of the usual propaganda and misinformation that people have been indoctrinated with. It isn't as if there are no answers to those points and if you address them to someone who knows their shit, it is fairly easy to explain whether or not you will share their view, if you engage in good faith you'll see they are not these caricatures.

@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Yeah, I figured that if you were in Punk circles you would likely know some Leftism, at least Anarchism. But that's interesting with the Panthers, you get some Maoism with them. Like I said, I don't want to condescend or convert or preach. It's just that the questions you raised specifically I think I could answer. I definitely think there are types like you talked about, I think Tom fits the "edgy" faux commie who is really a liberal under all of that, or Tim is the inarticulate "little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing" (emphasis on the "little bit" lol), but Zack definitely seems to have a much better vision and knowledge and he is the type that isn't just being a contrarian or edgy or bat shit, and I just wanted to defend that because if given a fair hearing and an open-mind I think even if one disagrees one could still get a sense of where people with these ideas are coming from. I'll hit you up. Maybe we can talk some music too. I am also a musician. Thank you for the pleasant exchange and Happy New Year!

The other thing that really annoys me about RATM on the political side is that when they did their music video for Bombtrack, they basically made it a propaganda reel for the Shining Path, a legit Peruvian terr0rist group, and its leader Abimael Guzman, who was imprisoned at the time. The Shining Path was responsible for massacring entire communities of indigenous Peruvians and randomly attacking other civilians, and even among a lot of hardcore Marxists they’re considered to be heinous villains. To be fair to Rage they did eventually recant their support and stopped airing the video, but it goes to show how ignorant they were about actual issues since the abuses and crimes of the Shining Path were well documented even back in the early 90s. And it’s even more hypocritical of them that they try to take a pro-indigenous stance in their music by supporting the EZLN and AIM, but ignored the abuses of native peoples just out of some twisted “solidarity” for a supposedly anti-capitalist band of murderous guerrillas that has nothing to do with them or their lives.

I was born in communist Yugoslavia, and in my view the government did a decent job of keeping the ethnic groups together under socialist "brotherhood and unity." The fall of communism is what led to violence and ethnic cleansing, communism in Yugoslavia was responsible for stamping out fascism and purging the Nazi quislings from power in places like Croatia. Communism kept a lid on ethnic nationalism, and by nationalism, I don't mean the kind of patriotic civic nationalism we have in the United States, but genocidal "blood and soil" type nationalism that killed millions of people during World War II and was finally stopped by the communist regime. Read about Yugoslavia during World War II, the communists were the good guys when compared to the nationalist Ustashe and Chetniks.

Making money and being a communist it's not a contradiction. Remember that Marx says that a capitalist society is condemned to collapse, and communism at the end will triumph. So working on a factory or being a wealthy owner of that factory, like Engels, is a contribution to the collapse of capitalism, the problem is that this revolution never happens , because that deterministic point of view is wrong, so to accelerate that process, communists start riots and revolutions.

But it is worth noting that those "communists" all came from a particular tradition within communist movements/ideology (ie the authoritarian/dictatorship of the proletariat tradition) and there has long been other communist traditions that are completely different (eg my own anarchist/libertarian tradition). The later have historically fought the former and the former have historically oppressed the later. It's like the difference between pop punk and crust punk. Not much in common but both "punk" in name. And the red star RATM wore was mostly referring to the Zapatista movement in Mexico who I have worked with and are legit pretty great.

I've noticed a tendency in the far left, which might include RATM, to actively disregard the sensibilities of normies in their messaging. "Softening" your message is seen as impure, even if it actually makes it clearer what you believe and what you're talking about. They like to think that their beliefs are practically self-evident, so everyone who doesn't get them (99% of people) are too stupid to bother dealing with. This makes absolutely no sense in democratic politics, but the more radical you get in either direction, the more you fantasize about a revolution in which you get to impose your beliefs on everyone else, and everyone left alive thanks you for it. Also, people of any political faction tend to view their opponents as morally and intellectually inferior instead of considering any other reason that other people may come to different conclusions. This is the equivalent of right-wing edgelords who refuse to use politically correct language even when it makes sense. It's only slightly worse to use this instinct as an obvious excuse for bullying, like the right typically does, than to get super pretentious with it.

I'm in a similar boat where Rage was one of my favorite bands as a kid. Some of the first songs I learned on guitar were theirs, I even bought a Digitech Whammy pedal to make the high pitch noises. In hindsight they are extremely cringe and I really question how much they really believed in any of it. Also funny that they didn't write a single song post 2000. Apparently there hasn't been anything new to Rage about in the 21st century. Also I can't respect any artist that required proof of jab to enter venue.

Five points is not a dive bar, its a breakfast place. Quite nice, and usually packed. Used to eat there a LOT, as well as their sister cafe, coastal....

As an American of Cuban descent, I can comfortably say that RATM breaking up brings me joy, but we have to many people in this country that are ignorant of the crimes Che committed. Thank you on speaking about this horrible human being, Finn. Know your history.

I was in the Army in 1995, and was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during Operation Sea Signal. This was when Fidel Castro said anyone who wanted to leave the worker's paradise could leave. Thousands of Cubans left on makeshift boats and rafts. I was there to guard the camps the US military set up to house the refugees that were taken from the sea by the Navy. On occasion, we'd get to meet the refugees and hear their stories. They were poor, and have no choice but to flee the land of their birth if they wanted to live a better life. Cubans were starving at the time, since the USSR had collapsed and aid had been cut off. A series of bad harvests made it that much more difficult. I wish that the members of RATM had been there to hear some of their stories. I still like the music, but the message was never my thing.

@@whoami7721 very sad story guy. there would be even more tears if you knew that the reason for the poverty of Cuba was the US blockade, which continues to this day, and that it is the US government that is to blame for the poverty of the Cuban people. you probably study history from music blogs

I love your content Finn, bro your very knowledgeable in rock music. I've been watching your channel for a while now and absolutely love it. You seem like a really cool guy to have a beer with talk about music. I've been a metal head since I was a kid growing up in the 90's. Keep it up!🤘👍

He’s good about music but Don’t listen to him about economics, man. all sorts of people have different talents and drive but everyone deserves to have access to goods and services and you, the Superman, should own the means of production. This doesn’t mean you and every one in a country needs to seize the means of production lol you just need to own an even amount of a business you started with friends or family, a worker cooperative. Just don’t listen to him and go work for a capitalist. Capitalist business owners will take 99% of the profits that you create.
