i wonder why since i was a little boy i always find rail way crossings so fascinating..we didn't have a car but sometimes my aunt would take her car and sit by a crossing for up to an hour and wait for a train to pass so i could see it..all these years later i still enjoy crossings and r.i.p to my long departed aunt for being such a kind lady
I guess it is the same kind of anticipation a fisherman or hunter experiences waiting on some action. I think that is what it is for me. It never gets old.
The BNSF Chillicothe Sub runs roughly parallel with the UP Joliet Sub from about US-52 in Joliet Illinois to about Coal City Illinois. The BNSF Logistics Park sits between the two subs as well as the UP Intermodal Terminal south of Joliet.
Love the video. I have a place known as Girard, IL. And it is an excellent place for railfanning! One side of the road is the Joilet sub, and the other is some BNSF line (which they cross over a diamond).
At 3:10, it says the railroad crossing is a private crossing. That means the crossing is on private property, but you noticed that the private railroad crossing is equipped with gates and lights. That's great! No matter if it's a public or private railroad crossing, every driver needs to have a warning or an indication that a train is approaching.
TommyBNSF in the California town I live in, Amtrak Coast Starlight(trains 11/14) has blown thru as fast as 85mph the hotbox detector at UPRR MP 67.1 calls out the speed after axel count
joethenark my town in Louisiana only has one signal on both sides. 4/7 of those are gateless cantilevers backed up by regular signals with gate motors behind them. the rest are standard signals with gate motors. overall they all have the best gs bell: the type 1 tuned to sound like a type 2. pretty cool. only trains we get through here are KCS, KCSM, UP, and NS. VERY FEW IC trains pass through here.
I liked all. Best one, is when gates are down, the bells stop. Lights keep flashing. Some signals have a strobe like effect as the lights alternate left and right.
In the UK most of our level/railway/railroad crossings have full barriers. Left lowers first (UK drive on left) and then once they are fully down the right ones lower. Most UK crossings are operated by a signaller
Ours in America look obviously different from you guys on and a other, Plus we have different types of bells like the WCH e bell and GS e bells and m bells (stands for mechanical bells) plus we have rare bells like uss teardrop bells. Australia has every bell from here but they are only missing the NEG e bell.
I wonder if the sound of a fast-moving freight like the one from 12:31 to 13:56 might have been one of the ingredients of the sound of the log cart going through the underwater tunnel in _Riven: The Sequel to Myst._
That was quite a video . I sat and watched it. it was noisy as could be but It was kind of interesting to see. To see that many crossing gates in one video really was interesting. the Amtrak trains were great. thanks for sharing.
But they come down all together, that is risky if some vehicle enters it and it starts closing, the gates in the incoming traffic should close first, and after a few seconds the other 2 (exits) so vehicles can go escape if they are already in

Thanks for uploading. This brings back memories going back (for me) to the late 1950's. Of course, the system was in place in one form or another earlier than that.
I grew up in Burbank, IL, about 45 minutes away from the Joliet Sub via I-80. I'd love to see some railroad crossings there. There's a crossing near Cicero and Southwest Highway that might be interesting to railfans.
This line probably has cab signal requirements now, since Amtrak is going above 80 MPH (which is the limit at which cab signals are required on a train). It's the reason why Amtrak only goes at 79 MPH through Bessemer, AL.

R.I.P Railway Crossings 1867-2015 They were interesting alternatives to traffic lights, and now the levelcrossings Company are removing them, they were good sounds to my childhood, better than the ones in Japan...
The train drivers in Japan don’t even honk. I live near a rail road crossing and it’s always nice when it goes down, I know the trains schedule so I sometimes watch it
All 4 gates descend at the same time, which is out of order. A vehicle on the crossing would have no way to escape, that is why the 4 quadrant gates are sequenced to allow escape. The fact that there is a Stop sign just 50 feet from the crossing means that vehicles could get backed-up on the crossing with no where to go when the lights start flashing. These crossings with a Stop sign on a busy highway are, in reality, Death Traps. When vehicles are bumper to bumper, as often happens at rush hours, it would be easy to get trapped on this crossing.
All railroad crossings should have a gate and be quad gated Edit: I also think the bell should ring the whole time the crossing is activated The crossing should also activate 40 seconds before the train comes
And the gates should not close all together, they should first close the ones in the incoming traffic, then the "exit" ones after a few seconds, so cars can get out even if they entered while the gate was closing.
Very cool. Have you ever gone to the I.C.G. line? In Monee it present have crossing gates and lights. Because it passes thru Monee in the Cut. The trains are below grade and pass under the bridges. You go and stand over the tracks and face the train as it goes under you. Gives a great shot of AWESOME you feel as if the train will hit you. It is a spectacular experience. I used to live there right along the Cut. The trains would blow their horns when a person is over the tracks. Monee is my home town and I miss it. Check it out sometime it's a great rush.
I grow up around a lot of Amtrak the sound of the horn cooswhatichie river on the outside of cooswhatichie I love them coming the leaving from yemassee
Interesting that they made those crossings quad crossings, due to 80mph, but didn't go ahead and make it a quiet zone while they were at it. But then putting a small median in is okay for a quiet zone? I like the plentiful presence of bells and pedestrian gates.
At the flower shop I work at in Houston, Orchid Express and Leasing, we have a 2 track right next to us that goes off all day long. Sometimes, the trains come to a complete stop. Anyways I've been on my electric bike and stopped at some of the train tracks and didn't realize there were so many different signal signs. Pretty neat if you ask me! That's why I ended up here was to listen to some of the different sounds out there. Ours sounds identical to 9:30.
