Railroading on the Tehachapi: Trains in the Snow!

The Tehachapi really doesn't get much snow and when it does, it doesn't stay long so when we got some snow last week I figured I'd better take advantage of it to share with all of you!
I caught trains at Walong, Marcel and Tehachapi. I also got some great stills. You can find those on my Instagram @Motopoet59 or my Facebook Mark Mcgowan (make sure you type Bakersfield in the search).
So, join me on this Christmas day for what snow I was able to catch!

Most of the time when I see a loaded low boy flat car it has a transformer on it.

There is a car that looks just like the low boy car on NS train, Dec 15th in New York, video on Wide World of Trains. Car is at the 17:40 of the video.

Needed a transmission rebuild at 18,000 miles. POS 10 speeds. GM is having issues with theirs too. Merry Christmas to you and yours and thanks for continuing to check out the channel!

where i am they use gas powered switch heaters to melt the snow from the switch points they can be nice warm place to rest up when there's no trains.

It never gets that cold up here. They used to use small diesel pots set in the cribs but I haven't noticed them in the last few years. Probably banned by the air pollution folks. I just have to make sure I don't get too far from my vehicle! I see you play a violin (or is that a viola?). Awesome! I love music. Check out my guitars if you get the time. I've seen huge transformers on similar cars. They always looked bigger but maybe just because they were loaded.

@4:58 there seems to be a rail road track besides the tree but it does not go anywhere past the tree.

Naw. It's just a rut or something. That's about where the old CP house stood but there has never been a track in that area. Thanks for checking it out!

Down here in SE Louisiana we refer to our steam engine as her or she. Most of us call her, “Our New Orleans Lady.” As she was built here in 1921 in the Southern Pacific’s Algiers Shops. Algiers is a part of New Orleans that is on the West Back of the Mississippi River across from the French Quarter.

I have always referred to them in the masculine. I think perhaps because they were always something I was on the look out for when working as in "Here he comes. Let's get in the clear". Merry Christmas!

Mark Clay McGowan Like a lot of other terms used in the RR and other industries we use different terms in different parts of the country. I generally refer to airplanes as she or her.also.

Thanks for the Xmas show Mark. The depot looked nice last week with the ice cycles and snow hanging down, it sure gave it the Christmas feeling but like you said snow doesn't last. I wish you and your family a Marry Christmas. As always thanks for your time. Paul

At 4:40ish: "Drop-Center Flatcar"; yes it has quite the weight capacity (copper-wound mega transformer, etc.) and you want the center of gravity closer to top-of-rail, discouraging a derailment.

Mark; Is there a stretch of single track between the depot and lower cable?

No. It's double track from West Cable to Mojave. I can find no definitive date when the Cable Siding was connected but I believe it was in the 1950s

The GMs are having problems with their 10 and 12 speeds as well. I LOVED my 05 GMC. Drove it for 15 years and 168K. Now my grandson has it. I should see if he wants to trade!
