That was a good one, gotta sleep somewhere! Zora hates the rain. It's too wet. We got caught out in a heavy one while in cottage country on Saturna Island BC, had to set up the tarp and tent on a road embankment using the base of a giant cedar to keep us from rolling into the Pacific.
I've never been a big outdoor camper but I a drove a big rig for many years. Often finding a parking spot for the night is a problem for big rigs. I became a master at finding spots behind grocery stores and other places I could settle in.
Hey Ryan just want you to know you inspired me to complete my first bike packing trip today. It was only short but very tough section of the king Alfred's way in the uk. I feel I did well and I know it's nothing as far as your self. I know it's just one step on a journey. Also anyone who does this, bring spare breakpads.
10:55 No SPLASHIES, no flatties, no whammies! But on a factual note, here in the Catskills in the northeast, we have wild thyme that grows in grasses and to me that is the best smell ever!
I’m enjoying this series like crazy and I’m stoked I came across it! I still can’t believe you bring a razor one NOT coffee! I love how some of your commentary borders on delirium. I think we all can identify,. I’m glad that crash didn’t turn out worse.
Couldn’t agree more. Love the silence of nature that is not quite silence, but all the little quiet sounds! Also, as the parent of a toddler, silence is suspicious!
Just got back with 2 other friends from the GDMR Steamboat Springs to Salida. Thanks for providing inspiration for us to do that. Loved the wide open spaces and landscape. Good job on this video!
Getting closer to the end. Love the people you profile. Yep, adventure sometimes presents us with ethics issues, like stealth, but you do have to care for your health and safety. Better a dugout in a park rather than private property.
Dang! I've actually camped at the Elephant Rock Campground where you met Jeff and rode my bike through the Midland tunnels . You need pickles, we just canned 12 quarts near your brother, here in Dillon, Colorado! Keep dry, amigo.
How can 7 people dislike this video?! Ryan, your videos are always so positive and encourage me to ride my bike. Thanks for making them. I’d love to go on some f your adventures
C'mon, Buena Vista, step up your game. No camping within city limits? If someone calls and asks, let them. Silly approach to vagrancy seeing as vagrants don't usually ask permission.
Another great outing and nice editing, re: getting your head down, Sometimes you have to pull the good old tried and tested broken down stunt , did it it France once by this private lake, just took the back wheel off and laid out my tools , made out that I was stuck in the dark, until morning, worked a treat !
I loved this video so much that I replayed it on the TV in my living room and made my wife and family watch it. Thank you for filming this and and for editing it and for posting it. I know it takes a LOT of work.
DO IT!! I rode opposite direction (Durango--Denver) of Ryan (I'm in next weeks episode ;)) but lemme tell you, it is gorgeous, but it is darn hard!! Worth every ache though.
Just this week I went to the grocery store and bought some canned frijoles and ate it on regular toast over 3 days at breakfast. I thought of you out there riding the trails in the sun, rain and snow ... happy trails to you!
Ryan, you're absolutely correct on the smell of sage after a rain. It's a wonderful earthy smell that I remember from a bike ride I was on near Idaho Falls, ID nearly 30 years ago. Thanks for reminding all of us about the great reasons we ride.
Ryan, another beautiful and inspiring vid. You have me dreaming about Colorado (while I continue to duck the storms in the Gulf and Atlantic!). Seriously, man, you are producing Hollywood grade vids! Very entertaining.
I'll second that, Ryan. This production level and authentic connection to the audience (Me!) has me thinking about when someone is going to help you fund something big and amazing. Not that everything is about "making it big", but you have something really special to share with the world and I can't wait to see what and how that is. You have my attention! Thanks for another Dirt Church. Amen, Brother!
So good Ryan.👍 two days ago I was riding in a field of sage that had been rained on overnight. It smelled amazing so I stopped and cut a chunk and tangled them in the cables on my handle bars and thought of you. Pretty soon I had a Giant Duzer smile on my face. Another priceless moment. In crazy ways you bring value to my life. Thanks. ☮☮☮
Been there, done that. Sometimes ya just gotta fly under the radar and go stealthy. I always have the most positive experiences meeting locals and enjoying the generosity and hospitality those strangers offer without a hint of concern. Yet the same cannot be said of the local policia. Unfortunate how law enforcement has become so adversarial and to be avoided. Why is that? I sense it’s something in the new training manuals.
Duzer you're like 225lb of solid muscle, I seriously doubt you have anything to worry about 😅. And yes...welcome to the REAL world of Homelessness. Where its not a "fun community planned event" with hot coffee and danishes in the morning. And the threat of arrest is very real.
I hear you…my uncle lived on the streets for many years. He battled severe bipolar disease which didn’t make things easier. I feel for people, especially now, who are experiencing homelessness
I just have to give credit where credit is due. RVD continues to amaze with his awesome drone footage WHILE RIDING A MOUNTAIN BIKE ON A TRAIL!! And, The footage using a handheld camera WHILE RIDING A MOUNTAIN BIKE DOWN A STEEP SWITCHBACK TRAIL!! It's all done for you, the viewer. Soak that in...
I continue to love these episodes since you're biking in areas I'm so familiar with! Bummer that you couldn't find a better place to sleep overnight in BV. I know exactly where that dugout is! Yeah, BV has been very crowded this last summer - I generally avoid that area during high tourist season - it's not any fun. It just keeps getting worse and worse. The Collegiate Range is so gorgeous though; if one can get out there far enough then at least there's no stupid tourists, just hikers, bikers and runners :) About the police officer and the no camping in town limits thing - BV and Chaffee County law enforcement have a lot to deal with these days due to the heavy amount of visitors, some doing really stupid things. I don't blame the city for banning camping inside limits, not one bit.
I know I'm whining but....why does a 20 minute Ryan Van Duzer video seem like 5 minutes 😭😭😭😭 sorry, just love your videos so much! No pressure 😜 Love ya, thank you for another great and beautiful video! P.S. loved the little lamb visitor!
Ryan, if I might ask you to consider - drop the Nutella and substitute for Kraft Hazelnut Spread.. Same-same but different in that it doesn't contain Palm Oil, a hugely environmentally destructive crop..
I’ve done more research on this and yes, you’re right. When I can, I buy the natural version…but in small town America the options are slim unfortunately
Following a rain delay and striking out with hotels, Airbnb's and the public pavilion, there is just something cruelly ironic about settling on a baseball dugout as your camping destination for that evening. One of those days where there is unfortunately a notable absence of trail magic. One can only hope the universe will provide for you the following day. 🤞
What a dude you are. Like a glowing ball of inspirational energy. I would say the level of positivity you're injecting into the world is pretty exceptional, and we need it. I'm about to go for my long run and I needed this.
Nutella and PB on a tortilla is now one of my favorite camping breakfasts! Thanks for sharing. Had 'em when I camped with my friend in Yosemite this summer. 😋
The CT seems so pretty! What are your favorite segments? I'm looking to run a few segments, 30-50 miles worth, as a last trail-run 'hoorah' before Colorado starts seeing snow. BTW, I love these weekly videos and often watch them with my kids.
What do you do with bike when you go into stores? You don't actually carry a lock with you?? I have that challenge riding the streets of Phoenix. Btw...did 60 miles yesterday, which included "the chant". Made it without any crashies,, flatties or whammies. :)
Thanks for the videos. After hip surgery I’ve been laid up and feeling sorry for myself. But I feel great now! Thanks for keeping me on the road. I will be back on a bike soon. There are good things in life. Keep it up!
@@jedibusiness789 Being old and cripped up, I don't tend to ride more than 30 minutes from home, so nutrition on the trail is not a major concern for me. I'm trying to encourage Ryan to engage in better nutrition though. He could make up a bag of brown rice which would last several days on the trail and add it to his bean burritos. When rice and beans combine, they make a whole new protein which he could use. Rice would also give carbs and aid regularity. Lastly, rice is cheap. I also want him to make some boiled eggs which he could crush onto morning burritos adding lots of cheap high value protein and calories.
Kudos Ryan for combing a rather grueling CT mtn bike ride with prep for running the Leadville 100 (which I just watched). Wonder how you managed to prepare as much as you apparently did for the run this summer amidst this ride (?)
"...and she gave a very robotic answer - no camping in city limits" - That's what you call a human with no heart (and possibly, no brains). Awesome video Ryan. Now I gotta wait till next Sunday :(. Cheers.
@@duzer you have to come to Puerto Rico! We are very friendly and we have beautiful spots. You can combine hiking and biking. Everything is closed by and we have never had a shortage of beans in our history 😄🙌🏼
The beauty of a big climb is the descent to follow, it sure makes the effort worth it! My e bike makes those climbs a little easier these days though but I still sweat like crazy and get a good workout! I cycled up a Scottish mountain yesterday and the descent was exhilarating, paved roads for me though ;) Awesome video once again Ryan, the scenery was breathtaking!
Most interesting camping spot was a on a kayaking trip on a very narrow beach on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California. From previous high tide marks it appeared there was just enough sand to sleep on without getting wet. There was very little wind and the waves were tiny. Sure enough we stayed dry overnight, but not by much! I bet we would stay dry and won a free lunch! :-)
Spent the last 6 days in the Ardennes Belgium, doing "the Ardenne Arbalete". 3rd day had some issues with a gearcable and couldn't make the miles(kms) for that day and lots and lots of rain didn't make the tracks smoother but a lot of peanutbutter mud, so spent the night in a pretty shabby hut, eating dinner out of a bag and replenishing my water out of a pudle next to the hut. But had a great time out there, the peanutbutter and nutella tortillas are now nutella and gruesli tortillas, I coudn't get the peanut butter down my throat. So chucked it.
I just ran part of this stretch of trail yesterday, from Camp Hale to Tennessee Pass! And I had the same thought as you - this would be so fun to ride! Glad you had an awesome trip!
