CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Charlie (Tom Cruise) discovers that the stranger sitting in his car with his girlfriend is actually his brother Ray (Dustin Hoffman).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Self-centered, avaricious Californian Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is informed that his long-estranged father has died. Expecting at least a portion of the elder Babbitt's $3 million estate, Charlie learns that all he's inherited is his dad's prize roses and a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Discovering that the $3 million is being held in trust for an unidentified party, Charlie heads to his home town of Cincinnati to ascertain who that party is. It turns out that the beneficiary is Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), the autistic-savant older brother that Charlie never knew he had. Able to memorize reams of trivia and add, subtract, multiply, and divide without a second's hesitation, Raymond is otherwise incapable of functioning as a normal human being. Aghast that Raymond is to receive his father's entire legacy, Charlie tries to cut a deal with Raymond's guardian. When this fails, Charlie "borrows" Raymond from the institution where he lives, hoping to use his brother as leverage to claim half the fortune. During their subsequent cross-country odyssey, Charlie is forced to accommodate Raymond's various autistic idiosyncracies, not the least of which is his insistence on adhering to a rigid daily schedule: he must, for example, watch People's Court and Jeopardy every day at the same time, no matter what. On hitting Las Vegas, Charlie hopes to harness Raymond's finely-honed mathematical skills to win big at the gaming tables; but this exploitation of his brother's affliction compels Charlie to reassess his own values, or lack thereof. A longtime pet project of star Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man was turned down by several high-profile directors before Barry Levinson took on the challenge of bringing Ronald Bass' screenplay to fruition (Levinson also appears in the film as a psychiatrist). All three men won Oscars, and the movie won Best Picture.

"Dad lets me drive slow in the driveway every saturday". While watching the movie, I missed the importance of this scene. @Courtney Moore the mileage refutes that unless the Dad never drove the car himself, either. I would like to think that Ray probably went home on the weekends. He is not really acting with the other actors, but merely doing his lines for himself, being in his own world, not making a connection.

Rewatched it a few days ago, A very touchwarming masterpiece of film, based on the true story of Kim Peek, the actual Rain Man. An excellent Cast with Hoffman nailing the role despite the difficulty being expected, Hoffman's influence and his depiction were perfectly done, and deservingly of it awards, I don't think anyone else could be cast other than him, with Tom Cruise, and Golino, just as great to the performance, an excellent soundtrack, storyline, dialog and effects. Overall the film was perfection in capturing our hearts, and respect for the Rain Man. Obviously, a bit pushed the story is in comparison to the true story, but that's Hollywood. Not a single dull moment, whether be the Poker Scene to the simple scenes of them at home, Covering comedy, action, hearts, anger, sadness and just loads of emotions, by the end of it, your left with so much sympathy, admiration and respect. A film that does not deserve to be spoiled, but a must-watch. 1.16.23

Dustin Hoffman deserved an Oscar for this movie. I wish Tom Cruise would win one. He was nominated for Born On The Fourth Of July! He was great in that movie and that's the Tom Cruise I remember not the Tom Cruise jumping on the couch saying he is madly in love with Katie Holmes and she divorced him just like he divorced Nicole Kidman! Mimi Rogers was married to Tom Cruise and she was his first wife. Tom Cruise needs to stop making Mission Impossible sequels and do a movie.

Yeah, Jim Carrey should’ve won one too. For Truman Show or Man on the Moon. I’m glad he at least won Golden Globes for those roles

There is some acting embodiment skills that was lost in time. I keep seeing movies from this era and I can't explain what is exactly but the actors have this aura back then. Am I the only one noticing that?

If he never made a movie after this. Dustin hoffman would still go down as one of the greatest actors ever

Its so funny how he keeps repeating words and phrases that hes heard before. Just like my brother does, hes no savant and hes not high functioning but he certainly acts the same.
