The allotment garden is very wet right now, thanks to the very stormy weather we've been having these last few weeks. I've been keeping busy though despite this, and I've gotten some DIY done on my mum's new allotment plot - building some raised beds.
Then I've started the new grow light system at home, where I'm starting onions, peppers, and aubergines off this week. I'll show my method of germinating them too!

😢😢😢 the floods there are sad it reminds me of our catastrophic flooding a few years back. Dry and sunny at this time normally means freezing cold. But I’m glad your able to get down to the allotment and do a few jobs. Have an amazing week Jim stay warm, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦

That is a super growing set up! I like the addition of the computer fans! You're making some great progress on your mums plot! 👏⚒️

Thanks Laura! Going to be an exciting year of growing I think! The grow lights will fill up quick over the next few weeks 😂 definitely could be more efficient with professional lights and reflectors but they do the job!

Gonna use the paper towel method for my peppers next month. No more staring anxiously at pots of mud for two weeks wondering if they'll germinate 😄

Have you checked the light output with a light meter? The T5 tubes in one of my 1.2m lights are each 54 watts and at 80mm centres. If you need to add more tubes you could have alternate tubes on different switched circuits then raise seed trays towards lights and turn half off (reverse square rule) and run all of them when they've grown to pot size plants at low level. Diamond pattern Mylar all round (with removable front panels) will help make best us of lights. I also use 12v PC fans, connected via old phone chargers and use adjustable speed controllers. A dehumidifier is essential, and I also use vermiculite extensively. Resist filling all the available space with seeds and running out of space as they get pricked out and potted up before it's warm enough to move them on. I started with one 600 x 450mm light and now have a total of 3.5m2 in a spare room under them, an additional 2m2 of shelving to use for growlight sharing with 12 hour shifts, and 2.5m2 of thermostatically controlled heat mats and propagators for use either on the additional 2m2 prior to germination, or under the lights after germination. The thermostats will reduce the propagator heating when the lights above are warming the soil beneath at seed level.

Impressive setup! These led 'shop lights' have given good results in the past, growing a few peppers and tomatoes up until right before flowering and going down to the plot. Onions seem to be doing well so far under x2 of the lights which I've lowered slightly. I haven't measured the light levels though. Going to set my dehumidifier up and another fan as well especially as the shelves fill up

@@downtoearthwithjim I've checked the light level under mine (new tubes) and get 115,000 lux at top of seed tray compost level, midway between bright sunlight and brightest sunlight. I use a light meter bought over 12 years ago for £18 and have found it really useful for getting correct height of lights, plus checking light loss inside green chequered polytunnel cover vs clear covers, how much shade is caused by a greenhouse or polytunnel, etc., but most importantly checking deterioration of T5 tubes as they require replacing periodically. If you invest a substantial amount in a T5 tube setup, watch out for when they are banned for domestic use and get some spare tubes.

I was just going through my seeds yesterday which is a mood lifter in the dark winter. Looking forward to starting my own seeds this year for the first time so this video was much appreciated. wondering if you have any tips to prevent pests indoors. Even my house plants have some flying gnats or something. 😮 Is the vermiculite-coir mixture better than potting mix for preventing pests? Also, congrats on your channel's recent growth spurt 😂 perhaps you got a jump on the competition with your "sow in January" video.

Thanks! It all starts in January with the dream! And plans for the growing season ahead! I've had some problems with gnats before and I think that's because sometimes Coco coir can contain eggs. Not had any problems recently just make sure whatever you're using is sterile as possible. I use Coco coir, fresh sieved quality compost, and perlite as a potting mix. I also use vermiculite on the surface to cover the seeds sometimes and that's hygienic. For seed starting I'll use just Coco coir if I'm potting on. If they'll be in the containers for a while I'll use my potting mix which contains nutrients from compost

@@downtoearthwithjim thanks for the tips... i might try boiling water on the coir next time to kill any eggs before sowing seed... will let it cool off first, of course. LOL How are your micro dwarf tomatoes coming along? I am growing two red robins and both are now about 8" tall with tiny little blossoms...Very cute 🥰

fyi.. Ahead of the storm season (September to August) the KNMI, Met Office (United Kingdom) and Met Éireann (Ireland) come up with names for storms in alphabetical order. Coming names are: Isha, Jocelyn, Kathleen, Lilian, Minnie, Nicholas, Olga, Piet, Regina, Stuart, Tamiko, Vincent, Walid. Its to make the public aware of the danger (?) But yeah, I find it stupid too. Whats wrong with calling it a storm ? Giving it a name makes it more nice, if anything.

There are many British traditions which are funny. Like the clocks going forward and back, pretty pointless haha. Very stormy winter this year isn't it!
