Rainbow Metal Sea Shell! Making Crystals and Metal Casting With Bismuth!

In this one, we take some of my favorite material on the planet and play around: Bismuth! We first make some amazing hopper crystals, before moving on to some lost wax casting of sea shells. Due to the very low melting point of bismuth, it is a heavy metal that can be smelted on a stove top! I hope you all enjoy and I'll have another one out soon!

I love bismuth! It is so beautiful and it's crystal structure is so unique and beautiful! It is a uniquely different metal and as you said, one that everybody should play with at some time! Lol! I whole heartedly agree! Thanks Theo, and I hope you are feeling better now. Food poisoning is not fun and will leave you drained and devoid of energy! So I hope you are feeling well soon!

If I knew more about chemistry I would understand this more. But this was just so fun to watch. Interesting and beautiful

I absolutely love bismuth. I bought a couple crystals from you a couple of years ago. This would be so fun to work with. I so love the work you do.

Bismuth is so cool on so many levels & really enjoyed all your trials and searches for good creations. I've often wanted to take a compressor/vacuum used for resin treatment (and also air conditioning lines) with a heat source rigged up.. Just curious as to what the Crystals would look like with the absence of oxygen. The down side would be you couldn't touch or mess with it inside. Great episode Theo

dude this wa exceptionally insightful.Although pouring the bismuth into a fresh plaster mold wasnt a great idea due to the moisture in the mold, i think it is extremely helpful for new metal casters to see what happens, the bubbly popy stuff is way more dangerous when its hotter metal pours like bronze, this helps avoid accidents. thanks man , keep making cool stuff!

Hey thanks for the Tips ! You're a legend . I tried Casting with Bismuth for the first time yesterday in an enclosed heated CNC engraved Graphite mould I have previously used for Brass. I had the Idea slow cooling would produce Rainbow annealing but perhaps it wasn't slow enough. I'll certainly try just torch heating it . Yes as you realised Its good to Bake your moulds to reduce trapped water when using plaster or clay moulds ..🙂.the spitting can be bad !

Bismuth is Dope! My first attempts growing Crystals went quite bad ..so i tried many many ways....by changing ONE Parameter each cycle. How much Bismuth, which Temp., which Time, how removing the "slag" (these are not impurities...its oxydised BI, so collect the "slag" and remelt it. Only a grey yellow powder remains, and even that you could redox it back to pure BI with chemicals.) after 100+ attempts i cracked the code....all sizes, colors and shapes. Must have... enogh material to fill the BOWL full just below the rim 99.99+ % PURE BISMUTH Rockwool or Glasswool ( isolation is very important) Stainless Steel Pot ( for MELTING) Stainless Steel BOWL ( for CRYSTALIZATION) Stainless Spoon ( to remove the "slag" from Melting Pot) Stainless FORK ( to remove the "slag" from Crystalization -Bowl ) TWEEZERS (for pulling the Crystals) 2 Pliers (for handling the POT or BOWL) SAFETY GEAR Goggles Tight-fitting Long sleeve shirt (Cotton, Wool, Linen) NO "plastic" ) Jeans or similar Pants Thermo GLOVES CLOSED SHOES ( NO FlipFlop or Crocks ...not because they`re UGLY ;) FRESH AIR CIRCULATION ANYONE....feel free to ask me, if you wanna make BISMUTH CRYSTALS greetings from Switzerland

Hiya, great vid with the bismuth there. The casting, when you oxidised did you have to polish it in any way or the result was only with heat? Have you tried adding 12% tin to bismuth? I heard it becomes malleable as lead.
