What's the best resource to look up ice thickness?

The best sources we use are through facebook groups. I would look up a and ice fishing group in your state and request to join. We are in washington state and have a central post with a map where everyone contributes ice reports. Unfortunately there is no central source and the state wildlife departments don't post about it because of the risks (legal). So facebook groups are the way to go.

Or you can use a bobber like most people

So with trout we find that the bobber method doesn't work as effectively as with warm water species (walleye, pike, perch etc). The majority of trout ice anglers we communicate with agree with this. Trout typically snatch the bait and keep swimming but don't swallow for a longer period of time. If you don't set the hook as fast as possible you have a really strong chance of the trout spitting it out and moving on. With bells you can spread out and get to the dead stick faster than walking around and checking bobbers occasionally. The ideal method is to use a jaw jacker that sets the hook upon tension. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your opinion, this style of tip up is illegal in a lot of fisheries outside the western states. We wanted to teach with bells since they are legal in all states.
