Time for some serious metal riffing with a lesson teaching the main riff of "Raining Blood" by thrash metal legends Slayer.
In this Raining Blood guitar lesson we are actually going to take a look at the first two guitar riffs in "Raining Blood" because I thought they sounded so cool going from one to the other that skipping either of them wouldn't be right.
The first riff opens the track with one of those dissonant melodies that Slayer are masters at writing. This opening riff is rather simple to play and shouldn't give much of a challenge to most players.
The second riff is where the speed is drastically kicked up a notch or two with a fast gallop rhythm. Pay close attention to how I pick this riff in the video lesson. Picking it in the way I will demonstrate in this Raining Blood guitar lesson will help you make that gallop rhythm nice and consistent.
After the gallop rhythm we end the riff with a quick little melodic sequence. Be sure to keep those notes slightly palm muted (especially on the 6th string) in order to help those notes kind of pop-out better.

I think there was a metal album of "Metal Christmas Carols" and August Burns Red or something did this song. They did a bit of other effects to make it sound "Christmasy" but I think I know what he's talking about.

The tonality created by the first riff is very similar to that of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, uses a similar scale, and is even in the same key (As played in this video, original recording is a half step down.) . Carol of the Bells creates the effect too in similar ways. Obviously, pretty much everything else in Raining Blood screams NOT Christmas, but ehh. Good ear.

I feel I was born too early simply because if the internet & RU-vid was around when I was really enthusiastic about metal (which was 20+ years ago) I'd have been in heaven watching and learning songs like this on the guitar. Nowadays, I'm a bit older and feel like I've heard it all before and so not as enthusiastic about it all, I'm like 'meh, just wish this was 20 years ago'.

Yeah I feel the same way, plus info on gear and all that is readily available, plus better budget brands these days. I saved up a few months at $4.25 an hour to get like $500, these kids making 3-4 times that would have $1500-$2000 and are now in high gain tube amp territory if buy used and easy to find now with reverb. Lucky kids

Anyone have any tips on the galloping low e part? Specifically, I can play the part but I feel like the only way I can play it is at like 50% speed or full speed but the picking motion becomes inconsistent and like a fast twitch muscle memory movement rather than an intentional, under control, relaxed flick of the wrist. As a result I find myself missing the up stroke on every 3rd gallop or so. It's like the motion that I am using on the first down stroke starts becoming the same as the motion that is used for the second down stroke where you hit the string and reset position above it. That's my best diagnosis anyway. I've been patiently trying to build controlled speed with this one, and normally for faster music the key is to just slow the whole thing down and let speed build as you become more comfortable with the song. The rest of the song works great this way but this particular part is a strug. Halp!
