NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #82: RAINWORTH
Welcome to one of those place which whose name is continually mispronounced by many. This is Rainworth, and I guess we have to start by explain why its not Rain Worth. In the year 617 AD, a mighty Roman warrior, named Readwald, stayed here prior to a battle with Ethelfrith, King of Mercia. In the battle, Readwald's son, Regehere, was killed, and from that day, the area was known as Regehere's Wath, Wath of course the name given to a ford or a crossing point over a river as we’ve learned in other episodes.
Over the years, the spelling of the name has changed, eventually morphing into Reynwath by 1268. From there it’s commuted again to the present day spelling. Theoretically, to call it Rainworth is not incorrect, given this bit of history, but local dialect has once again changed it into “Renneth”.
So now we’ve cleared that up, what’s here? Well, Rainworth is perhaps best known for being a mining village. This was the site of the enormous Rufford Colliery, which would vastly increase the size of the village from what was originally a quiet hamlet with just 13 houses in the 16th century, to a thriving metropolis by the 1960s. Rufford would stop producing coal in 1993, and since then Rainworth has shown signs of industrial decline. That said, its bouncing back now, and is becoming a desirable place to live.
Let’s check out why, as we take on one of the Mansfield areas most well known villages

at about 3 mins. If you carry on down that lane it brings you out at the fishing lake, we used to have our break at work down there with the ducks, lovely.

Very interesting and informative, and as professional as anything on mainstream telly. Well done. PS: Have you covered Teversal?

Thank you very much, that's awesome to know! I have zero previous TV/presenting experience so I must be doing something right! Teversal is in an unparished area, so it won't get an episode. Ashfield only has 3 - Selston, Annesley and Felley

I worked with a nurse who worked at Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital in the 70's. One night they were all warned that someone was hanging around the grounds. They thought it was Peter Sutcliffe but later found out it was the black panther just before he was caught outside the junction.

Holy mother! Could've been you guys who caught him first then had you known. I read his bio, his list of crimes is quite reprehensible

My old mum spent time in Harlow Wood after an accident. It was years and years ago now, but I remember her saying the ward was very spooky and one patient said she’d seen a ghost of a nurse in an old fashioned uniform!

Yes very good but the large tree in the centre of the village was removed much later than 1962 I'm thinking it came down in the 90's when the road was altered I'm sure someone watching this video will know exactly when it was I know my next door neighbour will when I ask her.

It went in the late 70s or early 80s. We were told Dutch Elm disease but I think it was just in the way…

My husband was born at “Southwell” , and he calls it “South-Well” not Suth’ll only the posh and 10 Bob snobs call it that, everyone else calls it Southwell

There is a genuine divide between those that say South Well and those who say Suth'll. 50/50 split. Nobody's right, or wrong. It gets its name thanks to an actual well - literally the "South Well", because Norwell is the "North Well". I've always known it as Suth'll, nothing else, and so I shall keep saying it that way.

I grew up on Southwell (never Suthull) Road in Rainworth (Renuth)
