John Smith-Jones (Calgary, AB) graduated from Alberta College of Art + Design in 2008 in the Jewellery and Metals program. His practice is mainly in the making of raised metal vessels; exploring form, surface, and colour. Each vessel serving as a metaphor for the body and spirit.
Fascinated with natural patterns in the world, especially in earth’s minerals. The main impetus for John’s work is exploring new techniques and new materials - yet he is employed in an ancient craft utilizing age old resources - copper, silver, gold and other materials extracted from the earth. For many years he worked as a geologist in the oil and gas industry and believes his training underpins his experience of the world and the creation of his art. The hammer marks on the surface and rim of the vessel provide not only an interesting texture but also reflect the history of vessel making and the experience of a particular vessel.

I’m just a beginner trying to teach myself exactly what you are doing. I’ve made a sinking stump that works well but would like some recommendations on where to find the proper raising stake or anvil to start the raising process. Thanks, your creations are beautiful.

As an apprentice trained and practicing goldsmith I despise the the arty farty approach to what should be a refined and precise craft, colleges and universities are destroying my profession
