Raise Sunken Patio Pavers!

The patio at the Project Cave had some pavers that were sinking. Sunken pavers are ugly and can be a dangerous trip hazard. Here I am raising them up back to the level of the other pavers. I pull out the old pavers, add paver sand, tamp down, reset the pavers, and re-sand the new joints (remember to use polymeric sand).
Please use caution when using any tools. They can cause severe injury or even death. Also, the projects you see me working on are simply that. Projects I am working on. I am not a professional and make no guarantees your work, or my work for that matter, will turn out right. Safety first and when in doubt, call a professional.
If you are in need of a tool to help extract pavers that are not glued together with polymeric sand, try this tool. The set consists of basically two small pry bars. The key is slow and steady to extract the paver a little at a time. If you apply too much force, you will probably bend them out of shape. There is a great video as to how this works on the linked page.

Your best bet for purchasing base sand and polymeric sand are probably the big box stores. You can get the products for way cheaper there than from Amazon. The sand is heavy and you are paying for the shipping, even if you have prime. You are just paying 3-4 times as much (or more) for the product for that free shipping. But if you insist on using Amazon, please consider buying through the links below. It really helps out my channel.
Alliance Euroston Bond Polymeric Sand,for Natural Stone and Cobble Stone Paver Joints up to 1.5" (Slate Gray) 50 Lb Bag. This product is also available in tan coloring.

Gator Maxx G2 Intelligent Polymeric Sand (Beige) 50 Lb Bg. This product is also available in grey coloring. amzn.to/3tjyyiN
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. There is no extra cost to you.
I want to enjoy the patio, but dirty pavers are ugly, too. Check out my paver power washing video as well! • Harbor Freight Portlan...
After that, I need to fix my umbrella base! It is reborn in this video! • Busted Umbrella Base R...

Looks great I would suggest using stone dust instead of sand it's holds stronger and wouldn't allow bugs like ants to live in it.

This was a nice fix but I think it would have helped if you could have explained what it is you were doing as you relaid the blocks as you obviously saw some that needed more sand etc. A little commentary during the relaying rather than just speeded up footage of the whole thing really aids the viewer to understand and learn from your expertise. Thanks for posting though as I'm sure it will encourage others to have a go themselves.

I will be tackling this project come Spring. My sunken pavers were caused by rodents tunneling from underneath. Thanks for the video!

I feel your pain. We have moles, but I don’t think they caused our problem. Our patio is raised. But those moles do a number on the lawn. It gets pretty squishy in places. Thank you for the comment!

They are moles causing the damage. I trapped several since late fall and live near a wooded area. Mother Nature is defeating me!

Just completed a similar job, but with 3 sizes of irregular surfaced flag stones. This means adding sand and making a flat subbase would not always work. When there's missing mortar between stones, also an issue. Great video, thx.

Questions. Does sand invite the ants, In the past, I have used screenings? Is there a reason some sink while others do not. If say a draining issue, would a barrier or something be needed or would it not just happen again. Let me know if you have anything on righting a very short wall lean. Contractors want way too much for fairly small job. I have some ideas but would like to bounce.

Sub-base is crap if it is subsiding... clay or moisture - either way it needs to be replaced with something solid to solve it you have to do more than just adding more sand... just paved my driveway and patio which area combined 1400sqft, to do it properly you need a compacted sub base at least 200mm/ 8", in some places (driveway entrance) I went 350mm thick with reinforcing mesh as I will eventually have trucks delivering firewood onto it and don't want any issues - top course 50-75mm thick and about 1 1/4" or 30mm of bedding sand, to much sand is bad as it leads to failures and if straight over clay or soil is just plain bad

Thank you for the comment. I’m going to admit, I have driveway envy. This was a deck I inherited when I moved into the house. Eventually, it will be redone, and probably removed. It was built too high and right next to the house. Over the siding.

Hi Kevin. Thanks for your video. I have couple of questions. Which tools do you suggest to buy? I am not a tool "woman". Is there a brand of sand that you recommend? I also have pavers sliding down due to a new fence we put last year. How do I level those?
@TheProjectCave
@TheProjectCave 4 года назад
Before I begin, this is what I did to lift a few pavers for a patio. It would not be strong enough for a driveway. I used a couple of flat head screw drivers to pry out a couple of the pavers. Used a generic sand that said it was good for pavers on its packaging. This went under the pavers. Use "polymeric sand" for the joints. After I placed the pavers, I used a rubber mallet to give them a few taps. Unfortunately, I haven't dealt with pavers near a fence. Not sure how to tackle that problem. I have a paver landing at the bottom of the stairs on the patio where the edges are sinking because the retaining piece has come loose. I'll try to make a video about that repair. It may give you some insight. Thank you for watching and the compliment! If you haven't already, please consider subscribing!

Could this also be done by just scooping out the excess dirt, smoothing it out and placing the bricks back? Not trying to be an ass serious question
@TheProjectCave
@TheProjectCave 3 года назад
Not really. There is already missing material under the deck. We have a mole/erosion problem where I live. So I need to add material to that spot where it has gone away. Under the sand is a stone layer that is compacted. Then the sand on top. The sand is one of the keys to making the deck level.

A little bit, but nothing major. That area is really the only spot the pavers sank. The patio was here when we bought the house. I love the look, but I would have done it a bit differently if I had put it in.

Looking for a recommendation...I have some pavers I need to reset to level. I also want to power wash the entire patio and refill joints with polymeric sand. Wondering the order I should do things. Should I do the power wash on the entire patio first, then reset the sunken pavers? Or reset pavers and then power wash? Of course, the polymeric sand would be the final step.
@barfman7767
@barfman7767 4 года назад
You should power wash first... because the sand in between the pavers will be blasted out anyways. Power washing afterwards will still require you to fill in the sand afterwards anyways. Why do the work twice?

barfman7767 Yes, after some thinking, I came to that conclusion as well 😊

Do you know why it's sagging like this?
@TheProjectCave
@TheProjectCave 3 года назад
Could be any number of reasons. We have moles and before our gutters were replaced, a lot of water would be dumped close to that area. There’s a couple of potential factors. However, after a year and a half, the repair seems to be holding up well. I sort of expect to have that entire patio surface redone in a few years. There is a paver apron at the bottom of one set of stairs that the mole activity really did some disruption.
@howies615

What kind of sand was that?
@TheProjectCave
@TheProjectCave 4 года назад
It was literally called “Play Sand.” I found it at either Home Depot or Lowe’s and on the bag it said it was good for pavers. That was the sand the pavers sat on top of. The sand for the seams is called “polymeric sand.” It helps lock all the pavers together. Good luck with your project!
