Update! As of 8/26/2019 this piece is available on my website. This video was originally released for patrons only on Patreon on Mar 4, 2019.
This is a personal walk through on how I raised a Raptor head from a single piece of 18ga copper without cracking. The bread and butter is in the sculpting and chasing but with out this very difficult raising style I would never have been able to create such a finished piece.
Thank you to my patrons on Patreon for making these video's possible! I literally would have never made the 50hours+ of video's and tutorials on patreon with out you! Thank you for making these happen!
The finished piece is now available on DouglasPryor.com
Or you can see the whole making of series I released this year on Patreon.com/douglaspryor.
Thank you!

I wondered how you did the beak. Not that I would ever try. BRILLIANT

I raised the beak slowly over 50+ anneals both over shaping stakes and pitch filled shaping passes. Look up a technique called Henkei-Shibori and you'll see what I mean. Cheers Clyde and I wish you well! -Douglas

This is awesome!!! I've only ever worked on chasing and repouse pieces and never dabbled in raising. You have definitely inspired me to do some raising pieces now! Keep up the awesome work can't wait to see this all finished!!!

I like your work mate. Could a wax be used instead of pitch? Some beaks have a proper hook at the tip and seems to almost curve over the lower beak. Birds of prey are just beautiful. Cheers.

Thanks for saying so, I've seen a few folks use wax or clay for vessel work but pitch is stickier and can be denser thus offering more support. I prefer to use pitch for work like this though wax or clays do have merits depending on the job you're doing.

Really cool watch. I'm trying to up my chasing/repousse game in aluminium (I'm European, we need that I in aluminium) right now. Specifically a giant street sign in 3mm aluminium I got in San Francisco a while back. Going to be a giant "Do not pass" shield with some chased parts riveted onto the wooden backer. I'm using copper pipe to make the small scroll on the back that shows its stats like +2 vs baelrog saves. Great work, great moustache. Hope to run into you at a craft Faire someday.

Thank you very much for saying so and the fellow stache love! 3mm Aluminium should give you tons of metal to work with! :D I'm making a 8ftx4ft crocodile out of 3mm mild steel and am thinking that maybe I should have chose aluminium instead lol. I hope your large shield project goes well! Cheers! -Douglas

@@douglaspryor Ty for the good luck. Good luck on your crocodile. I've done some doming and such in steel for spaulders but a crisp rolled adge is the hardest thing I've done in steel so far.

Nice.. great to see some behind the scenes on it and hear your thoughts. Your voice over mic is SUPER quiet, I had to turn my volume to max to hear you. Then when you want to actually video it was SUPER loud. FYI

Yes I am aware, the months ago I filmed this I recorded it in the morning while folks were still sleeping so the house was quite but as a side effect I turned out really quite. Could you still hear it all though?

Hi Douglas, I'm experimenting with copper as well, how did you make the feathers seen on the thumbnail?
@douglaspryor
@douglaspryor 3 года назад
Hi there Mo! That's awesome! What kind of copper work are you doing? I filmed some very thorough explanations, real time work in progress, and tool shapes and techniques for this vessel. They are archived on Patreon.com/douglaspryor. The episodes you would want to watch I think to answer your question is episode 10: Smaller tooling for feathers: www.patreon.com/posts/26472311 and episode 13: Fine feather texture: www.patreon.com/posts/26660160 Hope that helps and thanks for the question!

@@douglaspryor Thanks for the exact episode Douglas, I'll check it out. I'm trying to make an elephant skin texture, I've used a Dremel with a diamond engraving tip but it was kind of hard to control..
