Welcome to our little homestead! My name is Ciearra and I love to grow plants. My mission is to be able to grow and give away food and plants. As we learn more our homestead expands from more garden beds, raised beds, chickens and Vermicomposting. Raising chickens has always been a hope of mine and now I actually live in an area where I can have them! Thank you so much for all of your support as we grow, learn and take homesteading head on!
Happy Gardening!

What do you think about naked neck chickens? Have you ordered hatching eggs before?
@donna9384
@donna9384 Год назад
I am totally surprised you had any hatch with shipped eggs and having to open the incubator to add water. I breed silkies. And I think they are harder to hatch then other breeds. I hatch dozens of babies. I think if you had a different incubator like the Nurture right 360 you would have enjoyed it much more. It has a port on the outside to add water. So you don't have to remove the lid at all. My big incubator has temp and humidity control so all I have to do is set it at what I want it to be and it holds it there. I never candle eggs until day 18. I remove the Turner and put them back in until they hatch. I also run my humidity lower for silkies. 40%until day 18 the 60% for hatch. The eggs are so small it's easy for them to drown. So for shipped eggs you did great. They one chick with the leg issue is caused by the incubator being slick. I put shelf liner in the bottom of my incubator so it's easier for them to stand and not slide around. And I put marbles in the waterer so they don't get in it and drown. I have chicks hatching tonight and just loaded the other incubator with 60 more eggs. Lots of babies hatching here. Chicks in the spring is so much fun. And I hope you change your mind and hatch again. Its just the incubator you have. Sell it and get you a nurture right. And now that you have hatched eggs next time will not make you as nervous.

Thank you! Yes it was a lot for me. I agree a different incubator would have made all the difference. I made sure to order eggs from someone not too far away so that my eggs wouldn’t be in the mail too long. I would love to hatch more but am at capacity right now 🥴. I can’t wait for the day where I can’t put 60 eggs in an incubator and snuggle with silkie babies all the time. Do you have a website where you sell n ship eggs?

Thank you for sharing! We started using clear totes for first brooders. We noticed the chicks would be startled when we walked up and looked over at them in the dark totes. The clear totes allow them to see you. 34:38

Thank you! Yes! I use a clear tote now. It's so much better too because you can check on them without having to hover over the bin

Keep us updated on the struggling chick? ❄️💚🙃 And when hubby worked at the chicken farm they would expect a certain % of loss so don’t feel too bad if the chick doesn’t make it. I would help him occasionally pick up the dead baby chicks and there were quite a few so again don’t feel too bad if it doesn’t make it. ❄️💚🙃

Bless your sweet heart 😢 When you said the chick sunk in the cup and started gargling 😭😭 I’m so happy tho that your other chicks all made it and honestly your success rate was very high from what iv been told a lot of the time you only get about 5-7 good healthy chicks out of 12

It was a heartbreaking thing to have a sick chick. I had so much anxiety. I have some Serama and some Silkie eggs in my incubator now and I'm hoping for all healthy happy babies

Im in the UK. Ive got 2 Show Girl/ Naked Necks(bought as pullets) love them. The rest of my Silkies are normal Silkie bantams. We hit minus 7 here last year, lost loads of plants in the garden. All my silkies were fine. I actually threw an old duvet over the coop. Banked the sides up with extra bedding . Both my Show girls are sat on Ebay hatching eggs. We have one chick so far. As for the water, ive just used an old Chinese takeaway container. Put gravel in it, this is just incase they fall in it. Its basically toe deep

I'm so in love with my naked neck silkie now. She's the sweetest girl. Thank you! I'm going to completely cover my run and coop minus the spaces for air flow. If it gets too cold I'll bring the silkies inside but that's the last thing I want to do.

I know this video is older now, but quail water bases work great for baby chicks. Less mess too.

It’s best to candle eggs on or after day 10, opening the incubator every day is not good for temperature and humidity control

I saw another RU-vidr that raises silkies. She said she uses a quail waterer and she also uses the shelf liner to stop the legs from doing that (non slip rubber cushion like kind). Also the incubator is less maintenance with the water addition door outside the incubator. And to put food coloring to lightly color the water to tell the level of water added/evaporated. And I forgot there is a way to help the legs besides the shelf liner. Research is your best friend. Hope everything worked out.

Thank you so much! If I hatch again I will use all of those tips. I would love a new incubator but since I'm not a regular hatcher I won't buy one just yet. They are doing really good! They are three months now and outside in their coop

It’s like having a baby, at least for me, after labor and delivery I never wanted to have another baby. Back in the day I wasn’t offered any type of pain relieving assistance, it was natural all the way and I didn’t want to go through that again. But after awhile you forget the not so good parts of labor and delivery and you start wanting to have another. I think with a different incubator things would have gone a little more smoothly. Plus there’s the fact that all baby chicks aren’t strong enough to survive, you have to except that going in. It’s still very hard though. ❄️💚🙃

I have a brand new never out of the box incubator sitting on my front porch. Maybe that’s a lie I did read the directions and it intimated me so there it stayed. I might have to get it out and set it up with the price of eggs rising. ❄️💚🙃 That is if I can find it! ❄️💚🙃

I’m still debating on wether or not to get more chickens, I want them badly but I’m not willing to raise them to a certain point and then have them killed by a predator. Yes I’ll get more chickens, maybe fertile eggs, maybe baby chick, or maybe pullets I’m not sure. I’m so wish washy on the matter and quite frankly scared, what if I can’t find the place the predators are getting in, more dead chickens 😢 not fair. ❄️💚🙃
@TheThriftedPlanter
@TheThriftedPlanter Год назад
I understand. Is it possible to maybe build or buy a small coop and run combo and predator proof the heck out of it then keep a small flock? At least while you work on the big space?
@judymckerrow6720

Silkies are cute no doubt. However I chose not to raise them because their eggs are too small, they don't lay often enough, and way too small for meat. It's the reason I don't have bantam chickens. For me, I need a duel purpose breed.
@TheThriftedPlanter
@TheThriftedPlanter 7 месяцев назад
Yes they are more of a novelty breed. I've learned very quickly that while they are cute they don't lay very often and go broody so easily. Which has been very frustrating.
