Raising ducks in winter isn't easy, but if you get things in order, it's not too bad. Let me show you how we are keeping our ducks during a cold Vermont winter.

I know its difficult to get on with the day when its so cold, but for someone from where I live its a beautiful experience watching. I'd love to experience snow someday!! The best part of the vlog for me is whe you say "release the quacking"

Pretty sure that's "Release the quacken!" which would be a play on a line from the 1981 movie Clash of the Titans ("Release the kraken!"). Morgan's just full of pop culture easter eggs.

I have trained my pekins ducks to go in at night they go in by themselves , I did use your technique and now they go in by themselves I don't have to do anything I just shut the gate .

Any idea what kind of low temperatures the ducks can handle before you have to add an artificial heat source?

Don't forget predators from the air, especially owls coming in at night. They love ducks and geese. You can discourage them with some type of overhead cover or various tactics to make it hard for them to fly in or land and maneuver in confined space.

This will be my first winter having ducks. I’m also in Vermont and wondering if I should add hay bails inside their house? Right now we are still using the heater setting on the producers pride brooder/heater. It’s mounted so they can lay in front of it if they get cold. Only doing this because they have most their feathers but will be a little longer before they are fully feathered. Their house is basically like yours but it’s not as big. My two ducks have a plastic doggie door, but sneak out during the night... I'm afraid their going to freeze. One goes in and out, the other one goes out, but is afraid to go back in. It seems like the cold doesn't bother them at all. I keep a heat lamp on all night for them, along with a dog heater. I'm just wondering if they'll be ok this winter. I even put a winterized dog house in their pen, with nesting, just so they have another place.

When letting your ducks in the kiddie pool in winter, what is a reccomended temperature for the water. I dont want to make it too hot or too cold.

how often do you clean the hay? i only have one duck (i had 2 others that died and by then rural king wasnt selling ducklings anymore) and i feel like im cleaning its pen all the time

Hey just one more word of advice on the water spigot, you might want to take the hose off the threaded end of the spigot, by keeping it on you won't get the galvanized pipe to clear out the water as easily, the vacuum created by the water draining back down the hydrant will just suck water in from the hose and potentially freeze the hydrant. Just sayin'!

That’s really good advice. When it’s below 30 degrees, I take the hose off when I’m done. Ice is a killer!

Do you still give them a pool of water to play in in the winter? If yes, how cold is the temp outside when you do? I am trying to figure out if I should be giving my ducks a pool in the winter or not.. it’s 13 degrees Fahrenheit right now.

Why do people need scarecrows, like what damage do girls actually do to your farm, or a farm?, I would think something like a big mean Rooster 🐓, hell even a barnyard cat, or a house cat that's let out outside, wld tear a crow up, and do scarecrows actually work?, And why?

I’m not a farmer but nearly a gardener. But I own 8 ducks. I can definitely say that duck will use their beaks to dig into any flower pots they can find. Heck even some of them will grab ahold of my thinner flowers and pull at them. They can definitely do damage over time. ESP when you are trying to start a new seed bed.

Do ducks sleep close to each other like chickens do?

They do tend to huddle. Now that we are at sub zero temperatures, they huddle close inside the duckhouse in the spot that has the straw insulation. At 38 degrees (when this video was shot) they are pretty much business as usual.

It's there. I usually wait a few minutes before giving them their food. That way they get a bit more comfortable with me. They get two rations of grain per day plus random stuff (veggie cuttings, expired produce, seeds) thrown in for some variety. It's not as good as the summer when they are out on pasture, but I think they are doing OK.
