Idk if you’re reading this, but I hope you are, and that you listen with an open mind. Some of the stuff you said in regards to unschooling and schooling generally, basically implying there’s no good reason to take your kids out of traditional school, (I’m sorry if I don’t have more specific examples. I can’t bring myself to rewatch the clip because of how upsetting it was) were really triggering to me as someone whose mental health was completely destroyed by our educational system in the US. Being homeschooled saved my life. Many children need to be taken out of public school for their own safety, and their parents are not equipped to homeschool them properly. There are also many ways to do unschooling that are greatly beneficial for some children. But even if they’re not being taught well at home, for some kids no education is better than going to public school. Also the idea that teachers, by virtue of their education, are better at teaching kids than their own parents, who know them personally, don’t have like 50 other students to teach, and can experiment more with seeing what learning styles work best for their child, comes off as pretty elitist. I would really appreciate an apology in a pinned comment, or for you to just take down the video entirely. I really like you guys, but this was really hurtful to me. I’m sorry if I’m not explaining myself well. Please don’t get too defensive. I know you didn’t mean to hurt anyone. I just really don’t want this kind of movement of being anti education that isn’t structured in a very specific way to escalate to the point where kids who cannot stay in public school for their own well-being are being forced to go against their will. I had this threatened to me by an authority figure, that they would get police to drag me against my will to school. It never ended up happening, but even just the threat of it was so traumatizing. I hope you can see why this means so much to me.

Former homeschool kid here, Unschooling is a term that I’ve only heard in the context of homeschooling without following a curriculum, or a co-op, instead focusing on experiential learning. In my experience, it doesn’t mean an education or school, it’s more of rejecting specific curriculum. Which, by the way, there’s a lot of really bad nonfactual homeschooling curriculum options out there.

The discussion about unschooling reminds me, I was homeschooled (not religious, we’re just a neurodivergent family) but I’ve been in a bunch of different homeschooling co-op groups, and I knew one girl who was taken out of a private school for the one year that they were teaching critical race theory or something, and then when the year was up, they put her back in private school. I was so baffled when I found out (Edit: fixed a typo)

Unschooling has either changed dramatically, or it was different where I lived. The unschoolers that I knew tended to be some of the most left-leaning, least religious people in the groups, and they went for as much practical teaching experiences as they could (as in hands-on). They built lots of stuff, went to working farms, visited museums, went on field trips, etc, and if they didn't know how to teach something, they'd ask a community member who had more experience. It was really expensive but it worked well for some kids. Most of the conspiracy-adjacent people, ultra religious and/or pushy people were generally holding onto a terrible curriculum set for dear life. The worst of them were selling it MLM-style. One of my parents and I looked it over at multiple points and were honestly baffled at how expensive it was for how poorly it was written. My main teaching parent described our style as eclectic. We'd look at a curriculum or elements of one as a guide, but not follow it strictly. We could often find waaaay better text and workbooks on our own than what came packaged with them, and usually for cheaper. And we'd do a bunch of practical stuff in areas that my parents or friends knew a lot about. That's what most of our friends did too. We had a co-op that would purchase teaching material, and we'd research what we needed from that, or from community members who'd collect curriculum sets to compare them. The version of unschooling that Julia is describing sounds awful! I feel sorry for those kids. ._.

@winrycarver7701
@winrycarver7701 Месяц назад
@@mixusup We homeschooled me because the schools in our area were awful. We homeschooled my middle sibling because they are neurodivergent, and that mixed with a bad school was a recipe for a terrible life, especially at that time. We fell on hard times when my other sibling came along and unfortunately had to put both of them into school, and it was.... bad. Both of them needed accommodations which were not met. We tried to fight the abuse and the _many_ blatant inaccuracies in the curriculum (I am still angry that they defined the word "transcontinental" as "across a country" on a _test!_ ). But a lot of the time we were powerless. I wished that we could have continued homeschooling instead, but between medical problems and the recession, we didn't have the time and couldn't afford it anymore.

Hey, apologies for the super long comment but I hope it can be interesting/make you feel like you're not so alone as it sometimes feels like you might be? Being able to relate is kinda fun sometimes anyway. Obviously feel free to just ignore/skim it if you want, no pressure to read it like a hawk lol :D Christ, I hated school from 7th to 9th grade because I was bullied pretty bad in 7th (names, humiliation, de*th threat "jokes" from kids who technically had access to guns because it's a small town and their parents hunted.... yep, pretty yikes) and my teachers didn't seem to notice. Even though they were whispering loud enough for pretty much everyone to hear and the only person red as a firetruck was me until I learned to keep a straight cold poker face, they seemed genuinely oblivious. The people who didn't bully me either giggled along and then pretended to be friendly or just tried to avoid interacting with me. Though when my only friend finally forced me to tell a teacher (I didn't want to do it because it felt like admitting that what they said and did really got to me = I'm weak) they did intervene immediately. (Un)Fortunately we have a thing called KiVa-koulu (KIusaamista VAstaan = Against Bullying-school) and they sometimes have or at least used to have... weird ways to go about things. I was forced to apologise to my bullies when I didn't want to accept their extremely obviously fake apology. I then spent the next 2,5-3ish years pretty much trying to be as invisible and silent and distant as I could from the people in my class. Any laughter made me panic for a moment, a certain common and harmless species name made me cringe because it was used as an insulting nickname. After 9th grade I moved 400km away from that hellhole of a tiny town and those people. Only thing I miss is my best boy of a dog, who I visit several times a year. And I mean my parents still live there too lol I think the only "good" thing that came from my experiences is that I'm pretty much always at least a little hypervigilant of my surroundings/other people/the space I occupy in an area and I actually like it? E.g. I notice people coming through crowded hallways and I move out of the way. It sucks to have to push your way through or get pushed by someone just trying to get past, but I rarely get suprised by this because I'm aware that e.g. my big-ass backpack is in the way. Some people would probably get pretty overwhelmed by the constant hypervigilance but I kind of thrive on it? I've always been a person that most often prefers a lot of stimuli over little stimuli... Also part of why I moved away, because while I love the countryside, good lord can it be boring, especially for younger folk like me. And knowing e.g when someone's trying to get past and moving out of the way is also just a nice thing to do! On the other hand I can't wear headphones over both ears when I'm out and would like some hype-up music because I can't hear people, cars, critters that might cross my path, general noteworthy city sounds/their context.... I've been spooked quite a few times by cyclists passing by when I can't hear them. And tactical squirrels suddenly rocketing past right in front of me. Also about the feeling smarter. I was pretty average at everything else, but when it came to English (I'm Finnish), I absorbed it like a sponge. Every year, we'd rehearse the tenses, have/had, -ing, a/an, and so on. I pretty much never learned any new vocab in classes because as soon as I learned some basics in 3rd grade, I started watching RU-vidrs who spoke English and learned quite a lot of pronunciation and words from there. Words I didn't know, I somehow still figured out how to spell at least mostly correctly the first time, and so learned. I hated English class, because I was bored to death. I felt a little bad for it, but I found it very stupid how some people (who did not have learning difficulties) couldn't figure out if it was a cat or an cat in 7th grade. God forbid there's 'a' orange!! We first looked at a/an in 3rd grade, by the way. There's so much more I could talk about, but I won't write any longer of a book than this. If you read/skimmed the whole thing, thank you! If you didn't, I guess that's fine too! Not everybody cares lol Have a wonderful day/night!

@@sudenkieppiHello! Thank you so much for this comment. I did read it all but apologies for focusing on one thing as my ND brain is on a riot today. I liked reading what benefit you got from the experience because while, yeah, overall the situation was very horrendous and shouldn't have happened - I think I became a person who is incredibly empathetic and also knowledgeable about mental health because of what happened to me. I refused to become bitter or mean/become my bullies and I learned to self analyze and think about myself and my actionsmso much (first it was JUST pure self hatred/shame but overtime it changed little by little.) I refuse to let the world make me think my kindness is a weakness, or my emotions a setback. Anyways, I really appreciate you sharing. I was feeling awkward about my comment, thinking I sounded rude/aggressive or something the way I mentioned it (idk) so this really put me at ease. Much love to you. I hope your week treats you well. ❤
@sudenkieppi
@sudenkieppi Месяц назад
@@LeslieLorane Oh, no problem! Yeah, overall there's not really any good things that come of being bullied, and other than the hypervigilance (which in itself is technically not a good thing to have), I'm still pretty messed up but getting better slowly. I also try to be a better person, and try to do some kind acts even if they're subtle. Never been a bully other than fond teasing of friends as jokingly insulting each other is our love language. Of course plenty of compliments too, but we love to call each other mothertrucker (my friend) and beetch (me). It's basically a greeting ritual by now. Honestly, I will hate my bullies with a burning passion until the day I die, and I don't think anything will change that. But it's not something I fixate on, and it also motivates me to be better than them. They were very judgemental of me, so I do my best to be open-minded to new things and people. My experiences really changed me as a person, and I think at least partially it was good change. Also I think it made me at least 10x more funny... so worth it (joking). Part of my recovery has definitely been my high school experience. Going in, just basic human decency or people talking to me out of their own sheer will (not forced by school tasks) made my entire brain bluescreen and take a flabbergasted screenshot. My classmates are all pretty cool? Some of them I very rarely talked to because of anxiety, but it's evidence enough that I stopped shaking when doing presentations. I actually liked some of the presentations I worked on (my goodness do I have a funny and cute thing to tell you if you're interested). And nah, your comment is all good! I liked reading yours as well, though I'm sorry you had bad teachers :/ I think even if it came across as a little rude to someone, I'd say you have every right to feel that way. Re: the unschooling/homeschooling convo, I do think it would be valuable for schools to teach more life skills--Not so that parents don't have to, but because so much time is spent at school and doing homework that when kids are out of school they mostly don't wanna learn anything extra, so having those skills be taught as part of that framework would be helpful! Also I feel like "home ec" type skills being removed from the curriculum has caused them to become undervalued over time and so now a lot of people don't think they're even worth teaching, which is a fucking travesty IMO (I'm probably not saying this super well and I have more Thoughts on the subject but I'm still trying to relax and watch the vod so that'll be a conversation for another place and time)

@@eagletscosplaycloset3793 I’m so glad you said this lol. I was homeschooled all the way through (US kindergarten-12th grade; graduated in 2014) and it gets so *exhausting* to hear almost exclusively negative remarks about homeschooling from people who haven’t experienced it. While it’s true that some parents do it for the wrong reasons and it’s possible to homeschool in ways that are detrimental to a child’s development, that’s not the case in the majority of homeschool families! As an insider, I can attest that most homeschooled adults are indistinguishable from their public-schooled peers and perform very well when academically tested by external sources (like standardized testing and collegiate education). In some cases, homeschooling can be vastly superior to alternatives- especially depending on factors like the local school district.

Found a way to put this pretty succinctly: Homeschooling (and unschooling) should be about giving power back to the children, not to their parents. Many right-wingers have used it for the latter, but many many families use it for the former. Please don’t demonize homeschooling because of its association with right-wingers!
@aerynnsteele
@aerynnsteele 19 дней назад
Is there a significant unschooling movement beyond right-wingers? I struggle to see how intentionally making sure your child receives no formal education (homeschooling or otherwise) is a good idea. Unless you live entirely removed from society.
@eagletscosplaycloset3793
@eagletscosplaycloset3793 17 дней назад
@@aerynnsteele Unfortunately, a lot of kids really struggle with that kind of rigidly structured learning, and need a lot more loosely structured and flexible learning environment. Of course there are ways to do it wrong, but there are also ways to do it right. I would agree with you though that there isn’t a big movement outside of right-wing circles, because most unschoolers understand that it is not for everyone, only a very specific kind of child.

Technically unschooling is more about the kids learning what they want to learn, there's no real curriculum, but if done right the kid does end up with more or less the same knowledge. Which is not a whole lot but I'd like to think I'm on the same level as my friends, just with less diploma. Anyway if you homeschool or unschool your kids MAKE EFFORTS TO SOCIALIZE THEM. If they're shy, find a way to socialize them anyway.

Yams and sweet potatoes are actually very different. Yams are dry and starchy, while sweet potatoes have a smoother texture. Yams can grow to be up to seven feet long and a hundred pounds, while sweet potatoes are more like six ounces when they're big. Yams have a brown or black skin, while sweet potatoes are orange, purple, or white. Also yams are toxic when eaten raw, so if you think you're biting into a sweet potato, and end up in the hospital, you just ate a yam. Worth noting that yams aren't actually that common in the US, which is why the term has become interchangeable with sweet potatoes; nobody's actually had yams so they don't know the many extremely obvious differences.
@HunterJE
@HunterJE Месяц назад
There's a little more to this particular one than "hah Americans just don't know any better" though, as the term likely came from enslaved people from West Africa drawing a parallel from an unfamiliar food in this new place to a familiar food from the place they were taken from...

Okay I don't usually say this sort of thing, but this is, in fact, one case where I think one can say, it's been like a hundred fifty years, man, I think that's long enough that we can straighten out the misunderstanding. It's not fair to the sweet potatoes *or* the yams that we keep conflating them. Maybe if we got it through our heads that they're different things, real yams would have more of a market in the US, you know?

Oh, hmm, I don't really agree with J&J's takes on education, I think it's a very nuanced issue. A couple of thoughts which probably no one will ever read: 1. The traditional school system is very harmful for some kids (I was one of them, deeply traumatised) and appropriate alternative schooling is rarely available when needed. Ideally we would redesign the school system to have much more flexibility for different neurotypes and situations, but until that happens some kids absolutely should not be forced into regular school. I do however agree that 'unschooling' and other non-traditional approaches can be problematic and often don't fulfil the basic educational requirements a kid will need to function in life, let alone support them to fulfil their ambitions. The unregulated nature of homeschooling is a massive problem in general. However not every unschooling parent is a religious nut, some of them end up in that situation because they have a highly neurodivergent kid who is unable to engage with traditional education, they can't afford private tutors or therapists, and the state is doing nothing to help them find an alternative curriculum that works. It's not good, but the parents who do it aren't always pretentious and ridiculous, some of them are in a desperate situation and have run out of options. 2. It's actually a huge problem that schools don't teach skills like cooking, home management, tax/finances, civics, sex/relationships etc. properly. If you say "that's the parents' responsibility stop complaining" then you are basically reinforcing the status quo where certain parents (generally middle class, educated, healthy) have a ton of resources and knowledge which they pass down to their kids. Meanwhile kids of poor, uneducated, ill or absent parents are often left without any help those areas, so they end up floundering, making mistakes, managing their lives and finances inefficiently, ending up in worse situations and overall less civically engaged. This is a major part of how class structure replicates itself. Yes an intelligent-but-disadvantaged kid can put in a bunch of extra effort to catch up and independently educate themselves on this stuff as an adult, but it would be much better if we used the education system to level the playing field for everyone.

I’m so upset about how much shitty parents have become associated with homeschooling. The school system in the US is really bad. Going to public school made me miserable. Different types of learning, like unschooling, can be very helpful for a lot of people. And it’s really upsetting that a lot of people think it would’ve been better for me to have been dragged against my will to school instead of learning in a different way. It’s really upsetting that so many people just think ‘public school good, homeschool bad.’ Both have their positives and negatives. Both can be ab*sed. (CW: Su*cide) Long rant but this really means a lot to me. If homeschooling was illegal where I lived, I likely wouldn’t be alive today.
