Raising Rabbits for Meat Series Episode 1 Why We Raise Champagne d'Argent Rabbits on our Homestead
Raising Rabbits for Meat Episode 1 - Why We Raise Champagne d'Argent Rabbits on our Homestead is the first in our seven part series of raising rabbits. In this series we are going to walk through several aspects which we feel are important considerations when raising rabbits.
This video is a bit different from the forthcoming videos as we take some time to talk about our rabbit herd, why we raise rabbits and why we raise Champagne d'Argent rabbits.
We have had our rabbit herd for the past seven years and have really enjoyed the breed, raising rabbits and of course eating rabbit! Overall we feel the rabbits are one of the best livestock for anyone who is looking to sustainably produce their own meat regardless of the size of property you have.
If you enjoyed this video don't forget to subscribe for the rest of our Hickorycroft Farm rabbit series!
Thanks for watching!

Lol. The sheep in the background. He is photo bombing 🤣 like "you're making a video? Oh let me say hi". Your video on these rabbits is so timely...I just spoke with someone about getting one of these breeds!

They are an amazing breed. We have only raised d'Argents, so perhaps we are biased. If it isn't sheep it is chickens usually trying to steal the show lol.

Really glad you enjoyed it! Even after working with rabbits for so many years there are always new things to learn but we wanted to show that not everything you read or hear is 100% true or transferable to everyone's situation and there is more than one way to raise rabbits on a small scale. But its really nice to get the feedback!

@Hickorycroft Farm they are doing well. The original owner had them living together so I'm not sure if she's bred or when she's due. They are separated now. So excited for this chapter.

I've watched alot of videos on rabbits. But I would like to know what the meat is like. When I was a kid we had I think silver Martin's. I remember loving the darker color meat, the meat was really flavorful. But laty the rabbit I've been getting are, tasteless, white meat. And really disappointing. Thanks for reading this.

I would say the d'Argents meat is very mild. When I think of stronger tasting rabbit, I think of wild rabbit. Their meat is quite white although the front end seems to have a bit of darker colored meat on it, but I can't say that I really notice a taste difference. I am curious if they will taste different this year being raised on grass (grass-fed in tractors) instead of pellets in the cage. Thank you so much for watching

How did you find your breeding stock? I’m very interested in raising rabbits but haven’t found any advertised in the Market Bulletin for my state.

It took some time we just kept looking and picked up a few rabbits here and there. Our first three does actually came in a trade when we decided to let our Narragansett turkey flock go so that was helpful. Looking at a lot of breeds it seems like that is the case in many areas that there are a few people breeding but they are few and far between.

Rabbits are quite easy to raise and require very little space although it can get out of hand. We started with 4 lol. Happy to answer any questions. Thansk for being 200. Looks like they did give us back some today which is awesome. Just had to stay calm and be patient lol.

What age do you cull and how much do they weigh at that time? Also, how much feed do they consume by that time? Could you show it video of dressing the carcass so we can see the meat, as it's hard to find images online.

Thank you for your questions. We will be answering most of them in this series. We are keeping to the basics, but we are working on some follow up videos to answer peoples questions. ie: cost for us to raise a rabbit to butcher size and also tattooing and pedigrees and so on. We cull at 5.5 lbs usually if we are keeping it whole and around 7 lbs if we are grinding it, but we cover that better in our video on processing. Thanks for watching.

Thank you! This was very informative. At what age do you sacrifice them for meat?
@HickorycroftFarm
@HickorycroftFarm 3 года назад
Butcher is usually done between 12 and 16 weeks. We going a lot as it is so much easier for our family to use so we find it advantageous to let them get a bit larger. But if you want to roast a whole rabbit you would usually do that at around 5 lbs, which is often 12 to 13 weeks. Thanks again for another great question.

Welcome to the channel, and thank you for following along. Californian rabbits are another breed that we liked and the chinchilla. But we sort of.fell into this Brees and loved them, hence still having them almost 9 years later.
