----------------------------
Rakim recently sat down for a live edition of the Touré Show podcast, and in this clip he breaks down several of the songs that he considers his best work. The tracks he named are "Mystery (Who is God?)," "Juice," and "Mahogany," which he says was inspired by Diana Ross in the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues.
To hear more of their conversation, including why Rakim says he pushes himself to rhyme at an elite level, hit the above clip.

I am glad that Rakim did not lower his vibration and standard to that of gangster rapper. Rakim has always been about raising the bar and re-defining the artform of rhyming. He appealed to the cerebral side of rap, and he walked the path less traveled. He may have sacrificed more money with not following the formula of Dre -- but at least he maintained his integrity. As a grown man, you have to stand for something. Respect to the God MC.

I've met Rakim on a basketball court around my way, in the mid 90's. Very humble and cool dude. I told him that he was the greatest emcee in rap history, and he was very modest about it, saying that rappers like Melle Mel and Grandmaster Caz were better. Gotta love a brother who knows his history.

As much as I like Dr.Dre as one of the greatest producers to ever do it, I feel like the more successful he got the more paranoid he got about experimenting. Dre has said Rakim was one of his idols, so he should have understood what the sound should have been. However, I think Dre has too many people around him telling him that he can only do Gangsta Rap when he's clearly talented enough to expand his sound.

With all due respect, Rakim will be always one of my GOAT's, it wasn't about that gangsta rap shit, if that was the case, Busta would a been left...Dre' not just a dope producer, he got a dope production team, n that's what Rakim missed. Busta came with that str8 east coast hip hop shit n laid it on west coast tracks n went platinum, just like 50. Saying all that, Follow the Leader still bang today!

Yo my only goal as an artist, is to push a message ya know, like why even do this if I'm not impacting people, positive or negative I don't care.. A lot of people just want the cash and I do want money but money holds no deeper value than what we give it, the game, THE HUSTLE diluted the culture, and love for hip hop, turned to love for money... Its a damn shame

how was the watcher 2 not a live up to expectations brother? just my opinion
@dramaskrybe
@dramaskrybe 4 года назад
@@josereynoso2560 Yeah, that's a great song. But Rakim is on the remix. That beat was made for Dre and Em; Jay and Rakim were brought in after the fact. I'm mainly talking about The Firm. Listen to that album, then listen to what Nas was doing around that time (It Was Written), AZ, Cormega. All their solo stuff was more lively because they were working with producers with whom they had real chemistry. Likewise, look at the stuff Dre did for Snoop. It's tailor made for him. The Dre x East Coast stuff just never found its groove, in my opinion. And you can see why: Dre wanted Rakim to do gangsta rap so that he'd sound good on Dre's beats. But maybe Dre should have been trying to find a style to fit Ra's rhymes. Maybe Dre wasn't willing to compromise? Maybe Ra wasn't interested in Dre's vision? Stuff like that happens all the time in art/ entertainment. Collaboration is about coming together to make a whole new sound that showcases the best of each artist. Sometimes personality, ego, or limitations get in the way.

I wonder why Rakim and Dr. Dre didn't discuss what they both wanted before they got together. It seems like they could have saved each other time by having a conversation before recording was supposed to begin. Or I wonder if they did have a conversation beforehand and somehow misunderstood each other or one of them or both of them had changed their minds or something. Kind if interesting!
