Rakim recently sat down for a live taping of the Touré Show podcast, and in this clip the legendary rapper speaks about coming from a musically gifted home and being inspired at an early age by jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane.
He also speaks about a technique he uses to beat writer's block.The legendary rapper explained that he works songs from the end, which he believes is the easiest concept to imagine. To hear more, hit the above clip.

Notice how throughout hip hop's history virtually all MCs have had shit slung at them, some more than others. But NO ONE has ever disrespected Rakim. @@bernardhunter7912 Ra thought that Kane had dissed him on one of his records, so Ra threw some battle raps at Kane into the original (unreleased) version of Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em. Kane heard about this and called Ra, stating that what Ra thought was a diss against him was not a diss against him, and that they shouldn't battle. So I think you have it the opposite -- KANE didn't want no battle with RA. Also Rakim was far more of a 5 percenter than Kane ever was.

John Coltrane move to when he was 17 years old Philadelphia until he was about 28-30 years old Black Thought of the Roots was also born and raised in Philadelphia. Black Thought is probably the second greatest pure rapper and lyricist behind Rakim.

Ra a real artist I do the same thing it’s hard to take words out to fit the beat or the pattern of the flow if you are trying to get a point across or you want people to follow the dots connecting your rhymes with me this includes going over that sixteen mark or infiltrating the chorus/hook territory lol
