What do we do on our rare days off from the shed you might ask? Well, on the very first decent day of weather in 2020, we happened to be invited to a closed to club shakedown/track day at Curborough sprint course in early March. The Rallying History car club brought many vehicles to the Staffordshire venue from a Morris Marina to MG Metro 6R4's alongside Escort and Sierra Cosworth, Toyota Celica, Hyundai Accent WRC, Audi Quattro, Talbot Sunbeam Lotus and more.
There are a lot of cars in the club that didn't make it to the track day and hopefully the Rally Festival 2020 organised by them for later in the year will go ahead so let us know if you would like to see more.
This is a video we did for the car club and for practice with a different style of camera work but thought you might like to see it. Apologies in advance for the completely freehand, slightly dodgy camera work!

ROFL! My sister bought a two year old Marina and it was already rotten with rust. Our father spent several days cutting it up and welding everything back together. She used it for a year or two before a taxi t-boned her. At least she got more from the insurance than it had cost her, but I don't think it would have payed for the time my father spent on it. Weirdly enough a friend of hers also had a Marina, a sports edition of some kind. Don't know how long that survived. When they said someone had used a Marina for a rally I suddenly remember that my sister used to do that, but it was a false memory as she was the co-driver in an Opel Kadett, but the funny thing is that the driver was her Marina owner friend. I think that was why I for a few seconds thought that they had been competing in a Marina.

Some editions of Marinas didn't have the Sports Piano addition. They had the Rust Rally one.

Christian Buczko good things are worth a commitment. You can watch those cookie cutter tv shows where they “rebuild” an old car in twenty minutes if you need instant car gratification.

That Talbot sounded LOVELY! Oh, btw, my boiler suit has arrived ... I'm going to have to send it back because every time I put it on, I keep wanting to put a V12 Jag engine in my old Fiat Panda. My wife also says I keep waking her up in the middle of the night, screaming "BRACKETS!"...

I was there with my dad, as a rally obsessed seven year old in Sutton Park watching out for that Sunbeam as Toivonen was one of our favourite drivers 👍

It still amazes me that mere mortals can now own these machines. Imagine just being some bloke and owning a 6R4. Just having it there is your shed and knowing you could drive it without anyone telling you not too. I am a long way off but i think that is my new life goal.

Imagine being the nutty [redacted] who decided a v6 wasn't quite powerful enough for him and stuffed a Rover V8 in one... I saw that thing doing the Sunseeker and there wasn't a modern (2015) rally car that could touch it. You could hear that thing coming miles away!

unfortunately a lot of the group B stuff is now moving into the much much higher "elite" price brackets nowadays, you could grab them relatively cheap 15-20 years ago with them needing some work, also trying to keep what is essentially a "low volume prototype" rally car going isn't cheap either. might be worth trying to get something that was in rallies say 10 years ago as they wont be as sought after until the time and scarcity factor start to come into it in another 20 years, they will also be cheaper to run and maintain as they were based off production model cars, they will also be just as fast as some of the lower end Group B stuff, the electronics and advancements in tech has made the rally cars faster overall even if they were limited in class by BHP, it wont ever have the nostalgia factor of group B though due to it being banned

I know two people who have 6R4s, one is used as a show car, Which is a prototype, the other is used now and again for the odd time trials, and car shows. I got the pleasure of been in the passenger seat too, and I tell you what, I went blind with the power, the owner said you have to be off your nuts to drive it like its meant to be. He doesn't really give it full wrath when doing trials, as it spooks him. They are not easy cars to drive either.

I was very lucky at the age of 14 to drive a 6r4 chassis no 24 or 25 With a bit of tuition i got a well respecable 25th overall. My mates dad worked in the 6r4 team. It was a fantastic car to throw about. There is a guy near Fort Augustus who has two Lotus Sunbeams one gold with black stripes and black with silver stripes. They were both concourse and yet he would open the taps wide on them both. The black one was faster but it would never stay in tune. Cheers guys.

Nope, xflow or pinto with twin 40 / 45's, It's the sound of my late teens and the sound that left me hovering on 9 points for years. The greatest sound I've ever known and still stirs pure emotion in me.

Back in the 80s as a young computer engineer I turned up one day in my Cavalier SRi at Computervisions offices in Swindon and the sponsored 6R4 was there. Probably for photos or something. Importantly so was the driver (can't remember who). It was the first time I'd seen a 6R4 and I quickly forgot work and was all over it. In the end I was offered a couple of quick laps of the car park. That ended after a lap as a security guard at one of the other offices came over and was threatening to call the police because we were "joyriding". Anyway will never forget the experience, the thing felt brutal, not just the speed but the noise and smell!

I got a ride with Henri Toivonen 5 weeks before he passed away. I was 12 years old. It was in a carshow lottery that i won a ticket to a short stage with him and Talbot. Memories... Until now i didn't remember what car it was. But this is it. It was exactly like this, if not same? I know it was one of his old ones and it wasn't Porsche :) And i LOVE the naturally aspirated high rev engines. Cant hear them much anymore, only in Hillclimbs and retro events. Here in finland, very rare. Some Starlets, rarely Opels or Escorts.

Standing right next to the guiderail/armco at the start at our rallycross track when a couple of these Metro's in Group B+ (200-400 extra HP) spec took off among RS200's and Quatro's was bliss. Will Gollop, Per Eklund, S. Palmer, Hans w te Pas etc. Epic times.

I always thought the correct order was Talbot Lotus Sunbeam. But either way, a dream car of mine since I first saw one (and later when I got overtaken by one like I was standing still) Best car there.. Well that and the 6R4's. Lovely.

Back in the late 80s when I was at school two of the Tech teachers had a Lotus Sunbeam and a Lotus Cortina (MK2). Parked side by side outside my form room window was a daily delight, even at 13.

The T oyota GT4 is one of my favorite rally cars of all time. I wish I could have owned a a real GT4 but sadly I had a wife and child who preferred north American cars. I did however own a mini van which was also one of my favorite cars of all time. (Hooray!) that is what drew me to watching five years of two people you might know who were building a Toyaota powered mini in a shed in England! (wink). a melding of two of my favorite cars of all time!

my god, im waiting to see how it puts the power down. years ago i put a Renault r5 engine in a mini and all it did was spin the wheels, cornering was horrible and ruined the car. things we do when we're young.

I always wanted a Lotus Sunbeam but could never have afforded one if I found one for sale that hadn't been through a hedge backwards, so I built my own by putting an 1800 Fiat Twin-Cam engine & gearbox in a 1300 Sunbeam Shell, what a hoot :-)

My first drive in a road car was a sunbeam ( not the lotus alas ) and I can attest to its tail happy disposition; especially in the wet around hairpin bends 😂 You learn to countersteer fast when you're headed toward metal railings. 🏆

Some lovely car here. One of my best experiences when I was younger back in the 90s a friend of mine had one of three Lancer Stratos cars in the UK at the time and took me for a drive. What an experience that was, would love to own one of those. Was hoping to see one here.

It’s great to see people taking these old machines out! Hate to see a old rally car go to waste in a showroom, they were built to be functional! I currently race a Toyota GT4 in Alaska all year round, including on ice. I’d like to invite Binkey out to ice race when it’s finished, maybe like a world tour thing.

That was nice thanks. Metro 6R4 beautiful. Another stymy for British racing, like the mini with it's spotlights at Monte Carlo, the 6R4 had it's class changed so it couldn't race FFS ! Martin Brundle for the F1 leadership I say !
