Thank you sir. I have been preaching this for years going back to my days as a police officer in the mountains of a Colorado. We had so many pick up trucks burn up their brakes or break on the passes. Most, if not all, were overloaded. Now as an attorney when I have a PI case involving a RV first thing I have my investigator do is get all the specifics on the vehicles and trailers involved. When the vehicle involved is overloaded I have procured considerably more money for my clients. I have also seen where an insurance company fought the insured on paying the claim. It is not worth it anymore. Buy the right vehicle for the job.

That's what I try and tell everybody. My buddy has a brand new travel trailer that weighs 9700 pounds dry. It's massive for what he hauls it with. He pulls it with an ecoboost f150 with a weight distributing hitch and airbags. On paper that truck can do it, but should you? Towing shorter distances to nearby campgrounds he's probably okay, but we all go on a trip that the nearest overnight stop is 600 miles every year. I'll tell you, you want to see sketchy, ride behind that thing going 65+ for 600 miles. I always tell people to get more truck than you actually need. Does he typically need a F250 diesel, no. But that camper should not be towed those distances by anything smaller in my opinion. Every time we came to long hills he had all he could do to keep that thing above 30 mph and coming down hills even with trailer brakes it looked like the camper was going to push the truck out of the way. he even admitted, there's times the "pucker factor" was high and he seriously questioned his own choices.

I purchased the same truck and camper model in 2019. The very first time I went for a trip I was uncomfortable with the weight. Even though I was not overweight according to the scales, I was right at the max. We had the camper for two years and enjoyed the amenities when we reached our destination but I did not enjoy the drive which is part of the whole vacation experience. The last straw for me was when I hooked up my 27’ OS North River boat behind the camper for some ocean fishing. When I pulled over the scales I was way over weight. That did it. I didn’t want any part of a lawsuit because of my negligence and so I sold the camper. Best part about this was I actually sold the camper for more than I paid the dealer😁

This was a great review JB. I had a 2003 Ram 3500 Cummins CC 4x4 with Automatic and 3.73. I purchased this truck new. Only towed a a boat under 5,000 pounds with 2 adults about 3,000 miles a year. So about 5500 pounds with wife and I, and a little cargo. In 2019 moved up to 8,000 pound boat and trailer. Only towed that boat less than 800 miles total before selling the truck in January of 2022. Traded it in on A 2021 Mustang GT for 16,000 dollars. I meticulously kept the truck clean and touched up any rust on the frame with Rust-Oleum black paint. It was always kept in garage that was heated except for one year that I loaned it to my son. I had just over 120,000 miles on it when traded. No rust on the body. The sales guy told me 6 months later that they had found a crack in the frame on the passenger side rear. I was in total disbelief. He told me they just sent it to Auction. I now own a 2020 Ram 3500 Cummins, 68RFE CC with DRW, and pull a 5,000 pound boat plus cargo. After hearing about the frame on my old truck, I took new truck to Ziebart and had it rustproofed and the Bed sprayed. I think it would be kind of nice to know when you reviewed these trucks, to use a micrometer and measure the thickness of the frames. Thanks again for a great review and Happy New Year!

Absolutely. We were told our Ram 1500 5.7 Quadcab 6' bed or our F150 5.0 Crew 5.5' bed would both be ok to tow some of the shorty 5-ers when we first started out. But we knew better and looking at weights fully dressed out and just a snapshot of the trucks' basic capacities, it was clear we would be in a narrow window. Salesmen are never experts and just want the sale. The dealer or salesmen have zero liabilities on their hands for what they sell you. THAT should change!
@faithnevaehmartinez4509
@faithnevaehmartinez4509 Год назад
@@mikz86ta1 why should the salesman be liable? Granted I get that people just listen to whatever they're told and trust that it's true! But really in all Actuality it's your responsibility to do your own homework, and make sure you talk with several different people from different departments in the auto industry! If you only ask the salesman you'll only get salesman responses! You see someone with A setup like this on the street? St and talk to them about it if they are willing to or have time to talk with you! What's the worse they can say? (NO!) 9 times out of 10 people are more than willing to talk and answer questions. I've had truckers with pretty sick and interesting setups allow me to see what they got going on inside! There have been the ones who quite obviously were delivery drivers just transporting the vehicle to the actual owners,cause they didn't know Jack about it! Obviously your not getting manufacturers specs doing this. But what you are getting is real life information from the people who actually drive these vehicles around! Not engineering information from the manufacturers who most likely never drove these vehicles themselves they just designed them. They get given a box with so much square footage space. And told to design something with a checklist of amenities, and to make it all fit! Ya sure this specific truck can haul this specific camper just fine with the weight. But why doesn't anyone ever factor in altitude how long and how steep a climb shit is? Sure your frame can handle the weights without breaking! But can your motor handle it and at what speed and altitude? The higher you are the less oxygen moving through your engine so now you got over heating problems cause you can't just stop midpull! You have to fully commit to that hill cause stopping and losing all your momentum will be even worse on your motor when you finally get going again then it would be to just push through it! All this completely depends on how much Hill you still got left to go and if it's safe to stop there or even turn around! Is it windy out? I feel like the video brings up valid points on the legality side. But what about these things that also should be considered in the real world experience side of the scenario?
@rexhouseo7010

The truck you found has the same frame as the one that broke. Having a lighter engine and fewer options in the cab (less weight) is not going to make the frame fatigue any less, even if you squeaked under on payload. I agree that there’s no need for a camper this large in any situation.

Your content is great. The payload thing… it has been a challenge to get accurate info on that these days. Here’s why: to avoid paying anywhere from $2k-$10k over MSRP for trucks on the lot, you have to order a truck. I’ve been to 7 different dealers at this point and none can give me accurate capacities about our builds. They can only refer us to the trucks on the lot which, as you know, isn’t how it works. The dealers got what they wanted… no more negotiation. They’ll gladly sell you a truck for more than MSRP or, order one and you’ll pay MSRP plus some new line item fees that you can’t even believe… two dealers we visited had “dealer profit” of $1500-$1700 if we ordered a truck.

If being a hundred pounds over weight caused it to fail, it was going to fail anyway! If he had the gas engine option he would have been under gvw and it would have still failed in the same spot. The over hang on the camper combined with rough roads/ terrain has caused the frame to flex, fatigue and fail. This is a design problem with the frame strength. A properly designed product should support way more than it's rated, example forklift forks can support 3 times capacity before failure. Chains, car lifts, overhead rigging, etc. All have failure points many times over the rating to allow for wear and fatigue. Not trying to bash ram either. I own one, just stating facts. Think about if this truck had a wrecker under reach wheel lift and was used for towing. It would be under gvw but I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't see the same failure. Unless ram prohibits the use of truck campers they should warranty it unless it was grossly overloaded. They should weigh the truck as it sits, if he's within reasonable limits they should fix it. Now if he's 3k lbs over or something I could see, but a few hundred lbs, fix his truck and reinforce all your truck frames, because they don't have enough designed safety margin built in. Just my thoughts....
@robguttridge6591
@robguttridge6591 Год назад
Your COG analysis is correct. This failure is clearly the owner's fault. If he had had the common sense to hang the motorcycle rack off the front bumper, instead of off the extended camper, and weigh his axles individually with his fully loaded truck, he might have enjoyed his vacation.

Great video, there seems to be a lot of misconceptions that simply having a drw truck is a license to pull or haul anything. I have to feel some compassion for those who overload their trucks as the manufacturers all use deceptive descriptions and visuals in their advertising. The other aspect I've seen with the last 2 trucks I've purchased is the salespeople haven't been trained in any of this. They're just there to sell whatever is on the lot and move on to the next one.

@@timothytaxman6789 Yes. So many people overlook the CG sticker on the camper. It's there for a reason. The frame behind the rear axle is typically not as strong as the frame section between the axles. That's why it's best to keep the CG ahead of the rear axle.

grate vid. you need to look up the specks on a 1986 GMC V2500 ( remember in the 80"s thay underrated the campsites and today they overate them ) and horsepower was rated at the rear wheels, today at the flywheel. since 2000, all 4 door trucks have a 45 mil frame flex, you can feel, instead of reinforcing the frame to fix the issue, they changed pitch of the rear axle to fix the customer, moving the vibration up or down 10 mileanhour.

I would love to see pictures of where it broke the frame. There are brackets added to the frame to "strap" the camper in. Are those brackets bolted into factory holes, holes drilled for the brackets, or did they weld to the frame? This may be a self inflicted failure. All the big three have extremely strong frames, but the forces applied by a 5000+ lb load and an engine with 1000ft-lbs of torque increases the chances of breaking s**t.

You are absolutely correct, I had a 1998 Dodge 3500 Regular Cab 2WD Cab and Chassis with the 12 Valve Cummins and a 5 Speed (work truck). It had a steel Van Body that was 12’ long and 6’ 6” or 7’ high with a large lift gate, with tools and supplies the empty weight was a little over 12,000 lbs and when fully loaded with equipment the total weight was usually between 16,000 to 18.000 lbs. With a loaded trailer weight would be just above 25,000 lbs and we NEVER had an issue with the frame or suspension. I put 286,000 miles on that truck before it was traded off, they don’t make ‘em like they used to. Today it’s all about reducing the weight of the vehicle so the manufacturer’s “Average Fleet Fuel MPG” can be as high as possible which is a big problem in my opinion.

Darwin award winner ! Death trap setup. Luckily he didn't kill anyone. Just a quick glance at the picture, you can see that less than 1/2 of the camper is forward of the center of the rear axle. Truck had to have been steering like it was on ice all the time. Added a motorcycle and rack, plus probably a generator, tools, and a lot of other weight at the back end. Then add all the "just gotta have it crap" to go "camping". Plus potable water and black water, full propane tanks, etc. Years ago when slide in campers were popular, I've seen a few that had an auxiliary axle behind the drive axle.

They investigate all factors and may realize you were overweight and now, suddenly, you are found to be partially at fault even if you didn't do anything else wrong. Furthermore, the insurance companies may deny your claim because you were exceeding capacity. I once considered towing a camper that weighs just a couple hundred pounds more than the towing capacity of my SUV because I knew it COULD, but ultimately decided against ever doing it for the reasons I just mentioned.

Well another factor that I haven't saw a comment that mentioned this? Was there any pot holes in the roadway where this truck frame failed? The pot holes in a roadway create a lot of stress on the frame between the bed and the cab. Before the frame is comprised or damaged adding a piece of flat bar steel in the area of the truck frame where the cab and bed meet. Make it as long as possible this would add strength to the truck frame. There are usually unused holes in most truck frames however I would not modify the truck frame such as adding holes in the frame. Bolting the flat bar steel to the outside of the truck frame using grade eight bolts would prevent the frame from failure.
