The ram pump needs input head pressure (water drop) to work. It also needs lift height on the delivery pipe side of the pump to work. If there is too much head pressure feeding the pump and not enough lift out the pump will stop. This is because too much water is sent out the delivery pipe and pressure is lost in the pressure tank. You can fix this issue in 3 ways. 1. reduce the input head pressure some. 2. Increase the lift out on the delivery pipe. 3. slightly close the delivery pipe ball valve to increase resistance of the water flow.

yup ..... and if your intake has too much head pressure it will stop it too so then I have put in smaller intake or adjusted the intake valve in same fashion....yup

Yes typically any pressure over 25 feet will stop the pump.

Well done practical test. With the 6 ft. head pressure what was the minimum delivery height for the pump to keep running? Does this suggest a fixed ratio between drive head pressure and minimum delivery lift to maintain backpressure?

This has me wondering if there's a way to restart a ram pump from the output, maybe use a quick suction or pressure wave to open the waste valve?

It might be possible to restart the pump like this but so far I have not found a way.

Sounds like you need some sort of pressure equilibrium from the drive pipe and delivery pipe. Wonder if you can actually measure on either side? I figured it is constantly fluctuating but perhaps measuring the average?

The pressure spike on the drive pipe is very big as the water hammer hits. The delivery pipe is much more consistent.

What happens if the tank is completely full with water and no air cushion in it? 🤔🤔🤔

If there is no air in the pressure tank, the ram pump will reduce its operating efficiency or stop running. The water hammer effect force will be directly applied to the top of the pressure tank, which will damage the pressure tank.

The pump can continue to cycle but it will hit hard and oftentimes can break things.
