I've been trying to become a Librarian for a while now, I fell in love with the idea of that being my career but I got scared of going into debt when I was 18 since I was homeschooled and had no guidance on collage. I'm 22 now and trying to get started. I'm worried if I'm starting too late but I truly think that I'll be happier as a Librarian.

It's refreshing to watch a video about Library studies in Canada. I discovered a real passion for libraries since I've been working in one for about 3 years. I worked during my Literature and History degree. I will begin a master in Information sciences in Montreal this fall. I still can't decide if I want to do a Archival master or a Library one.

I live in Canada so it's dependent upon your geography for sure but my graduating class was 22-ish people. We all had full time permanent work within a year. While I don't intend to stay geographically where I am forever, I didn't have a spouse or partner or children so I was able to just move for work. It's totally up to your situation ND however much the cost of the education is in your country

Thank you for your video. I know this is from 2018, but it still has plenty of relevant information. Although I knew I wanted to become a librarian, I studied computer science as an undergrad because I wanted to pay down my undergraduate debt before committing to a graduate program. Also, it's my dream to become a reference librarian in the Boston area for a research university with a strong STEM program. I felt like studying computer science aligned with my career goals. Unfortunately, I graduated in May 2020 and the job market isn't that good for entry-level workers or people who benefit from an in-person workplace rather than a remote workplace putting a wrench in my initial postgraduate plans. I am considering applying to an MLIS program for Fall 2021 and have been in contact with some schools I'm interested in. I'm still hesitant because I don't want to push off my financial responsibilities for too long. Watching this video helped reassure me that becoming a librarian is not a cut-and-dry field. It's helping me stay hopeful that I can adjust my career plans wisely and tactfully while still feeling fulfilled in my career. Thank you for your video. I hope you are staying safe during these stressful times.

I think Librarian should be reassigned to be like the Therapist field. You can be an Aide, they do the menial tasks like book shelving. Then you have the Assistant which is a bachelors degree and during the BA you do a residency like a Physical Therapist, where its 1 year of low paid work. Masters of Librarian Science would be a concentration of the MA in Public Administration where you can basically get a MPA and can manage libraries. That would provide a solid support system and "rank up" in the field with no confusion on how to progress.

Hello! So grateful for this video. I'm a University freshman and I needed information about how to become a librarian. At first, I considered a School Librarian, however, i would not like to be in an instructional classroom type setting. So Thanks! What did you mean when you said: "undergraduates not in the humanities field basically always get hired"? I'm headed in the Psychology field but I would much rather go directly into Library Science.
@SassenachtheBookWizard
@SassenachtheBookWizard 5 лет назад
If possible, try to get your undergrad degree in something other than a BA essentially (not sure if your Psychology would be a BSc or not). Really, most ppl going into library school have an undergrad degree in history or English however, libraries are becoming very technology focused with their collections and programming. It'll set you apart and make you more desirable
@sweetsilence3252

Currently working as a librarian assistant and curious to step my toe into the library world whilst getting a BS in wildlife biology or general biology. Since wildlife biology field is a really competitive field, I am also keeping my mind open to getting a masters in library science as I have experience and do enjoy it. I noticed you said that many libraries are looking for candidates with non humanities majors and are slowly growing in demand. Is a BS in Wildlife Biology or biology a marketable degree within the field?

fab!thank you! here in the UK the libraries are dying :@( most are run by volunteers and they are hardly open-they have tried to update with internet and such, but most town libraries have non working printers-internet issues, and 70-90 year old volunteers who have no clue how to fix the issues. we do not have uni training for libraries-as there are only a few in the big cities that are paid at all. but how do they get funding at all? doyou pay to join and rent books? here it is free, but a lack of government funding is terribly non existant. i think they need to diversivy to provide a service better than at home-with regards to extra service you mentioned
@SassenachtheBookWizard
@SassenachtheBookWizard 6 лет назад
moppleinga ugh I'm so sorry. It's so sad to hear that. In Canada, libraries are fundrd partly but their municipality, their town and a little from the province and it's based off their population. Some have no problem getting funding while others pinch pennies. About half the libraries in the province I live in have membership fees of $5-$20/year but it all depends on their budgets.
@moppleinga7025
@moppleinga7025 6 лет назад
that's fair-at leastit keeps the libraries running..we did have a nationwide survey about paying to keep them open but people did not want to..but theres a great one in the city that has cafe within, an archive/movie section, it hosts craft fairs and things in the centre, with other serives, which i think is fab-it only opened a couple of years but i love travelling there to just hang out

Hello Sassenach, I'm currently a sophomore in high school. I have been struggling with finding a career but I've always kept the idea of being a Librarian as a back up. I have wanted to be a Librarian for awhile since Middle School actually but people kept saying it's not a good salary and it's not a demanded job but I've pushed those negative comments away and decided to go into this field. Do you think my high school Librarian would be a good help? I'm hesitant to ask her. Also if I were to choose to be a college librarian, what kind of librarian would that be?
@SassenachtheBookWizard
@SassenachtheBookWizard 4 года назад
Hi Nicole! I'd ask her for sure but be aware that a lot of schools don't hire people with professional librarian degrees in school. That can play a huge role in the pay. Professional librarians are not in DIAR need but everyone I finished school with had full time contract jobs if not full time jobs in our field. The industry seems to be creating about the same amount of graduates needed as people retire. Maybe because it isn't a "sexy field" that people know much about I'm in a public library system in Alberta for about 3 and 1/2 years and I make between $60-70,000/year before taxes, I also have a retirement savings my job pays into and amazing healthcare (it covers acupuncture for Peet's sakes!) But be real: are you able and/or willing to move geographically? What undergrad degree are you taking? If you have a dream location to work, what are their requirements for you to be considered? They'll all play a role. If you're tied to a geographic place who doesn't find or see the value in their libraries then you may have a hard time getting a job. People love to say tons of libraries when they've never worked in the field, been to a library in the last decade and think no one uses libraries anymore. I'd suggest going to talk to a librarian to the school sector, the public sector and academic. They all experience VASTLY different funding, staffing and duties.

@@SassenachtheBookWizard outside of public libraries, librarian work tends to be much more computer focused. If you are a solo special collections librarian, as I am, you are expected to handle everything: systems, database work, web editing, cataloguing, reference, etc. A lot of new MLIS or MISt grads never work in a library at all but in information management/research and records management fields. Another point to make is that it is very hard to transition to an academic or public librarian job after working in a specialized library as you do not get an opportunity to pick up many of the management and social services skills that are so commonly required for public/academic librarian roles. There is also a high potential for automation and linked data to eliminate many library jobs in the future. I am in Ontario.
