Between 1200 and 1150 BC there was a total collapse of many of the world's most powerful empires. Many causes have been theorised for The Late Bronze Age Collapse - a major one being the appearance of a mysterious peoples from the blue, a terror from the seas that wiped out civilization after civilization. Ancient Egypt was one of the few kingdoms able to hold off this mystery alliance, and here we have the Pharaoh Rameses III describing his struggle against the impending doom and fire of those legendary "Sea Peoples".

@Kyle Butler I had never heard of the Sea Peoples and their name caught my attention. I have listened to these words of Ramses III twice and concluded that every country faced with the pandemic needs a Ramses III to lead them. I realize it’s self promotion but it’s eloquent and inspiring. I can imagine someone who is thought to be God on earth addressing his people with such a speech. I cannot imagine what that must have been like. I have no doubt that he was able to defeat these Sea Peoples because he was a naturally gifted leader who could inspire. I can only think of one other person, maybe two, whose words were as inspirational. They were politicians, very different men, who lived nearly 4000 years part and were able to lead their countrymen to defeat a common foe. We need politicians like them today but I have despaired. Politicians are now about themselves and not the good of their people. I’m not sure we will ever see a leader like them again.

@@th0ck Okay, I think you've been playing way too much Assassin's Creed Odyssey, based on this comment. The Mycenaean Greeks were not known to ever employ mercenaries, and the only Bronze Age civilization known to employ mercenaries was Egypt. Mercenaries really only became more of a common thing across multiple states during the Iron Age Classical Era. The Sea Peoples are probably the single greatest mystery in the Bronze Age Collapse, because apart from some scant written sources about them, particularly from the topic of this video (and is clearly very romaticised and propagandist), there really isn't any additional information about them at all. If we could somehow link them and get a timeline when trade and/or agriculture began to diminish, then we'd have a much, much better lead on them.

I was reading up on Ramesses III and apparently some historians believe that these accounts and a lot of the great works under him was due to insecurity and trying to affirm himself as supreme ruler He basically was given the misfortune of a ruling in a chaotic world with invasions, a crumbling economy, and climate change - all playing into each other. Not an enviable position.

Nice video lad. Just an interesting tid bit if folks are interested, it’s likely (based on artistic depictions) that Mycenaean Greeks served as mercenaries in the Egyptian Army. It strikes me as likely that they had at least something to do with the Sea People’s, especially as the Mainland Greek cities collapsed one by one- those soldiers had to go somewhere, and why not some of them having a go at their former employers in Egypt?

Some of the peoples the Egyptians listed near the start had been referenced in previous Egyptian records. IIRC the Peleset and a couple others (I think 8pm the Weshesh) were originally groups from Greece, and they've done genetic studies of about a dozen skeletons from Ascalon (which was a major Palestinian (Peleset) city) a bit later than this, which showed that those tested all had southern European ancestry (which admittedly isn't _very_ helpful in narrowing down, but in all likelihood means Sicily, Sardinia, and Greece at the furthest).

Rameses III would never refer to himself as "Rameses the Third", because the ordinal numbers after the name were not used in Egypt. He would refer to himself as "My Incarnation" or he would use his throne name: Usermaatre Meriamun (this is a conventional Egyptological writing/pronunciation of it, back in the day they would pronounce it a bit differently). It's a minor detail, but it somewhat breaks the immersion.

Note: this is all Egyptian pronunciation before the Canaanite vowel shift (that is, classical Middle Egyptian pronunciation), which might not be completely appropriate for the Ramesside period.

@scotthenderson292
@scotthenderson292 3 года назад
This is largely because the Nile Delta was somewhat immune to the climate shifts that were causing massive droughts and destabilization. It's called the systems collapse theory. Tin to make bronze was very difficult to find and had to be imported from many places. Sometimes as far as Ireland and Europe. This made warfare expensive. Earthquakes and droughts caused massive destabilization. And then to cap it all off, the Sea Peoples came. And the Sea Peoples likely came because the climate shifts were affecting their own homeland. Which is theorized to be Europe and the Mediterranean. In normal circumstances, the Bronze Age cultures would have survived. But all these calamities happened within a century so they didn't stand a chance.

What follows is just my own theory based on my own studies of history. I think the memory of this invasion became the Iliad. The launching of the thousand ships...The sea peoples were likely a confederacy of Mediterranean sea faring kingdoms to the west, all the way to Gibralter, led by Mycenaean Greeks to whom they may have been vassals to some extent. The war was probably a result of grievances of tributes and booty or plunder inflicted on them by eastern kingdoms, ie Anatolia-Troy, and others, all the way to Egypt. I don't think it was a colonial campaign caused by drought and famine, as many historians suggest, else they would not have razed all cities. And such drought would even have been worse to the east. The assault ended as Rameses discribed by arrows on the sea. Achilles is the Homeric symbol leader of the war, who was brought down by arrow as it happens, and who it was said had slayed the Ethiopian king Memnon (did Achilles end up in or near Ethiopia ?); granted the lliad says Memnon came to Troy with a contingent...There are many deviations, and anachronisms, in the Iliad, ie the Mycenaean alliance armada did not in fact win, and the anachronisms are best explained by oral retellings of a few centuries of preludes to the all out culmination. But it is true that few returned, and there are many striking nuggets of similarity that could have retained through four centuries of bardic retelling of what became the Iliad, from the collapse to the first written account of Homer. Too many to list here. Also this is the time of the Exodus which I believe was effected to assist in this invasion on the side of Egypt with the promise to at least one tribe of Canaan of their own autonomous, or at least semi autonomous nation as reward, and so began the kingdom of Judah in the wake of this crushed invasion, in the Mosaic constitution known to us today as the Covenant to unite the tribes of Canaan.

However, in ancient times a lot of them became Babylonians, then Nimrod and a number of his tribe went to Khazaria, whilst others went elsewhere and became i saac sons, their angels and ju tes, and later nor(th)man people. You can do as I did and buy a wall atlas, then trace migrations BACKWARDS. Not forward from where various academics propose, as they can't all agree. I came up with White Europeans being the ancient Sumarians after the ice sheet there melted. Maybe the horn of Africa before that - but some people have always lived on ice. Still do. So there is no saying really. Some scientists say it isn't possible to date accurately beyond around two hundred years, and less honest scientists do make up claims as to DNA and age, as they want the grants. It's their liveliehoods. The circa 2-3000 year old Silure 'Cheddar Man' is a classic example of scientists fibbing big time - although those two shocked even other scientists with their outlandish claim, their failure to seek peer review, and failure to declare there were other much older cannibalised bones of European Whites in the cave (if dating that far back is to be believed). So, I decided to pretty much ignore supposed dating of ancient remains and concentrate on migrations, artifacts, styles of writing, language, etymology. A real and interesting learning curve.

Eric Cline? He notes from Egyptian records that they came 3 times over a dozen or so years but were repelled each time. Egypt "stopped" them but were the only major civilization at the time not to *completely* fall. However, the damage was so great that Egypt was but a shadow of it former self prior to the sea peoples' arrival on the scene. All very interesting stuff. @@anonemoose9130 Actually, the civilization that not only survived but thrived during the Bronze Age collapse was Assyria, which became the dominant power all the way down the levantine coast until about the late-11th century BCE, when they had to pull back due to successive waves of new invasions. They were the one power to have enjoyed almost continuous political stability during this period. It's kind of odd the entire collapse is treated as a dark period, because if anything it gave the region the first taste of Assyrian supremacy. Look up the campaigns of Tiglath-Pileser I (1114-1076 BCE).

5:50 Peleset = Pelasgoi (pre-Indoeuropean Greeks from Thessaly and Crete, later Philistines), Tjeker ("Thekel"?) = Teucrians = Trojans, Shekelesh = semitic mercenaries (i.e. "shekel" = weight and coin, later Sicels/Siculi), Denyen = Danaoi (Indoeuropean Greeks from Central and Southern mainland Greece), Weshesh = maybe Ausonians (pre-Indoeuropeans from Southern Italy, known pirates). I have two doubts: 1. If the Teucrians were involved, was this before or after the Trojan War, before they'd be allies, after rather subjects of the Greeks (Denyen). 2. Could the Weshesh be Cypriots (just then in the process of being turned into Greeks) instead of Italian pirates? This I conjecture from Alashya being then the name of Cyprus and, if we remove the al- (Semitic article?) part, it leaves Ashya (presumed origin of the word Asia). Ashya and Weshesh are not that different, but neither is Auso(n).

@@Adhjie - I agree with that but IMO the Siculi are foreign arrivals to Sicily, maybe with a first stay in peninsular Italy, where they probably arrived in the early Iron Age (c. 900 BCE?) along with the Etruscans (Teresh or Tyrsenoi). The main rationale for this is that Sicilians are very unusual in their genetics, strongly tending to Syria-Lebanon specifically, something no other European population (save the Maltese) does. While for westernmos Sicily and Malta this could be explained by Phoenician colonization, it cannot be the case for Eastern and Central Sicily, where there was never stable Phoenician presence at all. Also the Shekelesh are mentioned by the Egyptians as one of the few Sea Peoples who were circumcised, a practica that is original from Egypt itself and surely extended to the Levant under Egyptian control in the Bronze Age. Shekelesh also sounds like "those of the shekels", shekel being a Canaanite weight unit, typically used for silver and later also the name of coins (much like the pound in Britain). So my take is that the Shekelesh were necessarily Canaanites dedicated to mercenariate or piracy or both, probably some sort of proto-Phoenicians.

Pros&Cons Unlikely, considering that the Sea People also reeked havoc on the Mycenaeans as well. This is actually how Greeks as we know them today emerged. After the Sea People invasion, the Mycenaean kingdoms were destroyed, the Linear B script was forgotten and the region went many years back in terms of progress, in an event called the Greek Dark Ages. After a some centuries however, the Greeks modified the Phoenician alphabet to make their own and built the Ancient Greek civilisation

This implies that Trojans (Tjeker) and Greeks (Danaoi) were allies in these expeditions, however the chronology is very close to the most likely scenario of the Trojan War, so there should be some sort of relation. Maybe those Tjeker were just the remnants of a destroyed Troy, all under Greek leadership now, this would be particularly true if they first sacked the Hittite Empire, to which Troy was probably vassal or otherwise satellite.

The beginning of the Phoenician Golden Age was around the same time as the Late Bronze Age Collapse. They most likely were the "Sea People" given that they were a Thalassocratic Empire that dominated the Mediterranean Sea and its trade.
@Typhy7
@Typhy7 4 года назад
@Adam Defibaugh Yes, the Hittite and Egyptian Empires were either at war with each other or formed a coalition against Phoenicia. Either way Phoenicia must have created a grand alliance using the tribes in Iberia, Sardinia and various other coastal regions of the Mediterranean, either to protect themselves or to kick the two superpowers while they were down. With those tribes, Phoenicia launched naval invasions on both Egypt and the Hittites. The Egyptian invasions were largely unsuccessful but managed to cripple the Egyptian economy. The Hittite invasion on the other hand was very successful, with many Hittite cities being destroyed and plundered. As for Mycenaean Greece, I think it was just collateral. The alliance must have been riding on a high with the success of the Hittite campaign and decided to raid the only other superpower left. This would've caught the Greeks by surprise, which would explain why they suffered far more damage than the Egyptians and Hittites combined. Assuming that the Trojan War was in fact historical, it'd have taken place around this same time frame. This would also be able explain how Mycenaean Greece went down so easily, as most of the Greek armies would have been busy on the Trojan campaign.

Circumcision is probably not so much a Semitic practice as an Egyptian one by origin. It might be vaguely Afroasiatic but Berbers were not circumcised in these accounts and would not be until islamization surely. The Shekelesh might be related to proto-Phoenicians thus. I remember seeing another vid on this subject . Could they be the Iberomaurusian people ? They were very battle hungry and they were in this area at the time I believe . They also seem to have something to do with the time after the mythological kingdom of atlantis had fell. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DtupDWfp1D0.html

Excellent Video ! Pharaoh Ramses III was the Winston Churchill of ancient Egypt. Like Great Britain in the summer of 1940, Egypt too stood alone against the oncoming Sea Peoples whirlwind of destruction ! Everyone should try to visit the Temple of Medinet Habu in Egypt - dedicated to Ramses III !

This Ramsey guy seems really up himself. Heard he's a pretty angry cook.
