One of my favorite Rammstein songs. The chorus is pure euphoria to me. And it pairs so well with Klavier. Those two songs are underrated standouts in not only Sehnsucht, but Rammstein's entire catalog.

So true. It’s amazing how you can tell which era Rammstein songs were from now not so much but like Herzeleid/Sehsucht/Mutter all had unique sound elements that stood apart from previous albums

For me this song is about the old man representing wisdom and the water being clear like a mirror is about being able to see yourself clearly as a person , because if you don't you will find yourself regretting it later in life through poor choices you made early on. The old man held tight to his philosophy on life till the end to which was then passed on to the younger person when he died.

Yeah .. the last two albums are very much the Sehnsucht sound. You know there was a big fight when they were making Mutter to keep it electronic like Sehnsucht, half the band wanted to go more rock and that half won up until “Untitled 2019”

Sehnsucht and Mutter are unrivalled masterpieces. Gut wrenching emotion and totally unique, deep atmosphere. Today they sound like music for a silly dark comedy act, no feeling at all.

I remember an interview (ahem: from the last century) of Till I read. It was about how he got inspired for this song. He said he was on vacation, on some tourist beach an old man was hired to smooth the beach, tourists where constantly walking over the just smoothed out sand, destroying the work. So the old man started all over. I guess he felt kind of depressed by that. His song has an even more depressing spin of course.

I love all versions of Rammstein, but their first 2 albums just hit different. I feel Till seemed to sing with more range and there was more electronica mixed in. Oh, and I suggest watching the Rosenrot official video if you haven't done so already....

So happy to see this! Yes this is my favorite song & Chels if you remember me saying this song got me very emotional as well the first time I heard it…still does in a way it’s just so beautiful. I just wish it didn’t have that weird intro LOL but I couldn’t find any other good audio of it. This is from Rammstein’s second album Sehnsucht which is also the same album that Du Hast came from that was released in 1997. & yes that is Richard’s face on the cover. Actually there were 6 different covers with each different member…Schneider’s face is more commonly seen on when this album is shown but you can find pictures of each one online. Vanity could be one interpretation but if you look on line each interpretation is varied with most just saying it is about the wisdom & insight of old age.

Alter Mann is such an underrated gem. I see you still haven't done my all-time favorite from them though. I highly recommend 'Spiel mit mir' from Live Aus Berlin. It's on youtube!

That was awesome. And the lyrics are quite tricky. Here's my take on the lyrics: The ocean/sea represents life. The old man want to keep life/sea calm, no waves/changes/ new ideas that would stir it up. Till/young man wants circumstances he doesn't agree with to change. The stone represents these ideas. The old man, rich on life experience, tells him that some of these new ideas are naiv and fairly tales. After the old man died and the young man grows older, he wishes the old man would still be alive to ask him for advice. Maybe it's an parable between Till's relationship with his father. Although I am a huge Rammstein fan and I love the heavy guitars in this, I also get why their music is referred to as "dance" metal when you hear songs such as this. I'm totally not knocking this song - quite the opposite as it will go on my gym playlist!! It also takes my mind off the pain when I have Till in my ears!!!

The theremin sound is a synth...it's actually a couple of tones in this song that are similar to the sound that a theremin makes without the sound bending of that instrument...you can bend the sound with a synth and get an even more accurate representation of a theremin, but I don't think that's what Flake was going for here...

"The water should be your mirror. Only when it is smooth will you see how much fairy tale remains for you." To me, the song is about someone lying (fairy tales) to their fellow man by pretending. Through an event (stone in the water) this masquerade (the old man) has fallen and he must now ensure himself that are image is maintained outwardly.

I don't think that was a theremin Mat. Great weird sound solo though. Way way back, the first time I listening to it I felt that sound was speaking to my soul in a non humanly interpretable language, idk, like every cell of my body or cristals in the plasmatic liquid among them were getting aligned by that sound... Anyway, enjoyed the reaction as always.
