Ran-day is fast-forwarding his ownership series timeline to bring you a pretty special episode. His classic Scheel 45 sailboat is in Bristol, Rhode Island, which happens to be just down the road from Shannon Yachts. He stopped by Shannon Boat Company to say hello and then convinced Walter Schulz, the founder of Shannon Yachts, to come for a walk-through on his classic sailboat. Not only did Walter stop by, but had some straight talk about off-season priorities.

Out of all the sailing channels that I've been following for the last 5 years this one episode has been 100% more informative and educational than I've ever seen on any other channels! Walter is a wealth of knowledge and information that is worth its weight in gold!

Love the philosophy behind Shannon boats! :) You and the Captain have made me confident enough to consider older boats with solid glass and educated me enough to know that if it takes another year, before I can afford a Shannon or similar, then that's what I'll do. I could listen to this man talk for hours. Truly the Boating Buddha ;) If he'd be prepared to sit in the warmth, suitably lubricated and chat with you and the Captain, I reckon that you could sell seats for that one! Fair play to you Ran-day. You took everything he said with good grace. But then, not to have done so, would've been unforgivable ;) Hope the Captain's okay.

I loved this episode. What a cool guest. Impressive knowledge of all things Boats! You could create another RU-vid Channel just on “Visiting with Old Salts” beginning with Captain Q of course! I would urge with expediency before they go sailing into the beyond. And all that knowledge and experience goes with them.

Ran-Day. How wonderful this episode is. Walter is an absolute treasure. Salty. Command of colorful language in an original thinker. An artist. A philosopher. Now I dream of sailing in the dark, away from powerboats watching meteor showers. In addition, he gave you such helpful insights into your boat and the priority of fixing them. I laughed but was horrified. Hiroshima. Last Gasp. All those through hulls that might be okay but the stuffing box….god was with you out on the open water leaking gallons into your bilge. this was maybe the best episode you have done and least expected. I hope you continue with all the content you have been making with our Captain and the friends you are meeting while becoming a seasoned sailor. Thank you.

So many things I could say about this video...I will say one thing. Randall treats Walter with the same respect/awe on his boat I would give CQ on mine. This brought me WAY back to my Grandfather teaching me boating 40+ years ago and leaning in to learn what wisdom Walter might share. Those who have done these things are so incredibly worthy of our time and energy to learn from.... Thank you, Ran-day, for sharing this. It was an amazing video and I am so glad I watched it.

Hello Ran-day: being a marine engineer for several decades I personally prefer traditional shaft logs with stuffing boxes. Very reliable, easy to service, cheap to maintain, and very safe. You can work on a stuffing box even when at sea. Dripless seals are great for keeping bilges dry; however they are very expensive to maintain. If you are in the Bahamas for example, parts will be difficult to locate. They are expensive and troublesome to replace every 5-6 years.

What a wonderfully down to earth and amazing man. Thank you for doing this interview Ran-Day with a man who has contributed so much to yachting who like me would more than likely prefer I said Boating. I agree with him about night sailing even though I've never been blessed with doing it but that's one of the main reasons I want to sail. To be able to do a crossing or get offshore far enough that there's no or very little artificial light in the night sky as I imagine that's as close as a man can get to seeing God's truly wonderous creation aside from looking into the eyes of their first child. I was off the coast of Cuba in a steel 45 foot French Sloop. It was 3:30 in the morning, Rubber Soul was playing lovely from the dvd player. The stars were out in full. The water whispered to me from its unseeable blackness. I picked up my course from the compass and switched over to Orion's place in the spreaders. Used Orion and the Beatles for a good 40 minutes before looking back to my instruments. Poetry, pure poetry.

Welp. The first you tube episode to get me all teary. How moving to hear Mr. Schulz talk about his love of night sailing, the stars, the northern lights! When you first hear his voice and encounter his manner, so pragmatic and gruff, you wouldn't imagine that he would wax poetic about such experiences. But it somehow makes it all the more moving. I know we live in a post everything age but what a surprise to discover the romance of sailing in the words of this hardened boatyard grunt as he calls himself! What a great episode. (dang am i glad he gave you his advice on that damn stuffing box!)

This was truly an awesome episode! Thank you Walter for taking the time to talk with Randy and the rest of us. I learned so much from this viewing. It makes me more comfortable/confident to someday seriously consider owning a sailboat. It would be an eye opener if you showed the project Post It Notes and talked about the reasons behind each of them. Walt crystalized critical issues vs the priority life threatening issues. I hope you moved the propane tanks to a more secure area away from the boat until the storage compartment is up to standard. So far your channel has taught me to look out for a Bird’s Nest of electrical wiring, a worn out Quadrant assembly, how to inspect cables, and now leaks below the deck level, sizings for a holding tank, the dripping Stuffing Box, proactive maintainable on the shaft assembly, and the proper set up for propane tanks. Keep up the great work!

Probably one of the BEST interviews I have ever seen. Walter is such a character and most informative and educational shipwright I have come across. Honestly, somone needs to write a book or make a movie with his character in it. I really enjoyed this episode and felt like I was just hanging out with a legend and getting free advice that most would charge thousands to get. I agree with others that I could spend hours listening to Walter give advice and tell stories. I hope you get a chance to spend more time with him and perhaps have a live Q&A. I think its imperative we preserve all his knowledge for current and future generations. Walter even made sailing at night seem like a spiritual experience that should be embraced versus a scary and nervous time of wondering what you are going to hit. I almost feel like I want to sail at night more than during the day now, lol. Thank you Ran-day for all your time, patience and hard work in putting together this archive of sailing information. Just a wonderful and well done production all around. Cant wait to see more episodes like this with other legends of the sea!

Sailing at night is magic.. and it should be on your to-do list. It’s easier to see channel markers and lights for navigating… and with GPS there should be no worries about hitting bottom. Congratulations for not ending up being weeping puddle in the bottom of your bilge...you handled Walter's boat critique way better than I would have. All invaluable suggestions/cautions from an absolute master, but none-the-less, difficult to hear. Best wishes for keeping the boat safe while tackling the repairs.

Hey Randay, we live in Bellingham Washington and if we don't fiberglass over the bolts on the rubrail or toe rail they always sweat and drip. You can put a big blob of caulk over them to stop the sweating. You need at least 1/4 inch thick all around each bolt and caulked tight to the whole. I take a calking gun and just run a few circles around each bolt and make a nice mountain lol. Any metal that penetrates from inside a boat to outside needs to be insulated in order not to sweat. At least here in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Hey Randay I have had someone before my put a nice access hole in the top of my old deisel tank. They did a nice job and you can reach in and clean every inch. Mitchell access hole is a good 6 inch. I can have my arm in there and still see I little around it. My tank is old galvanized tank from 1972 and looks like new on the inside.

Freeze plugs are needed for sand casting, they are very easily replaced. A vacuum gauge on the fuel system shows the condition of the filters, it prevents engine failure. Another item that costs a few dollars and saves hundreds Dripless shaft seals sound good, but they fail “catastrophically” a regular flax seal costs $2 and is easy to replace Never use dripless “The answer to a problem no one was having” Very well said

The purpose of a freeze plug is when they’re manufacturing the engine block there are sand cores inside the mold of the engine block that must be broken down and taken out as space holders for your water jackets as will as oil passages they hold the spaces in the casting the molten material flows around these sand cores and is removed and some are actually machine I would replace them with bronze freeze plugs Your tanks that are 5052 aluminum are OK but if ever replaced you should go to a 6068 marine grade aluminum you could find this in the Coast Guard specs for vessels for hire. It’s just a better product. It does cost a little more than 5052 but once again, what a fantastic guest , you and the captain do an awesome job say hi to Sea dog

It's soo good to see you again Ran-Day i have been thinking about you and Captain Q lately and wondering what was going on . this was a wonderful episode listening to you ask questions and picking Mr. Schultz mind about how and what to do with your issues on your yacht .It was so nice to hear him reminisce about his sailing and some of the things he's done and how he compared your project to some of his .I truly empathize with his love for sailing at night there is something special about being on the water at night just sitting there looking to the sky and stares with the water lapping at the hull the piece and quit and the skies and stares above you it really brings you into the moment and alows you to see who and where you fit into the scheme of life .Thanks for sharing this with us today and please tell Captain Q i said hi .

35:15 - I resonate with this with all my being. Sailing alone, at night is peaceful, quiet, solace and stars. 36:40 - Born in a landlocked country, I have only ever spent a single week (mid August 2023) aboard a sailing yacht, let alone at sea, yet my most beautiful memory is lying on deck, watching the Perseids.

I have just enjoyed my favorite video from your show. Walter is a gem, "to every problem is a common sense solution". My life long belief exactly!! I am selling everything at 60 to go sailing everywhere but have no sailing experience. My common sense solution is to go to sailing school before shopping for a boat. Fix and prepare that boat and do simple sailing for a few years before ever considering an ocean passage. Me and the Caribbean will become good friends I hope. Cheers from Florida and 40 years salt water fishing has given me a clue to some common sense on the water as did 3 Navy crossings to the Mediterranean while in the Marine Corps.
