I sailed over 5 hours on a Paceship 26 this week. She's 26 feet. So you can't expect extreme speeds and the wind was good for a while then almost disappeared. We couldn't catch the 32's and 34's. But we stayed with them under both wind conditions. Yes, they were just a bit faster. In 10 NM, they might have gained 300 yds on us. She's a nice boat. And this one looks very well maintained.

Cap'n & Randy, you've earned yourselves another subscriber. One thing: I'm not mad that the Cap'n has an encyclopedic knowledge about boats. I'm not even mad that he's got the charm and can still climb the ladders with ease. I'm furious that he's got more style than me. The red/green suspenders are awesome and timeless and I've burned my entire wardrobe in protest. Keep up the great work, and keep these awesome tutorials coming! Cheers from Brooklyn, NY!

Great episode. Saturday is the new Thursday! When I was a young kid in the early 80's I did a ten day cruise on a PY 23 in Long Island Sound. Kneeling headroom only and a briefcase porta potty. We got all the way through the Race and it felt like an ocean crossing. Back then then the PY 26 seemed large...but nothing compared to the first time I went aboard a Catalina 30. When Tanza built them they included an all teak interior and teak and holly sole...incredible for a 26 footer. Back in the day most people started off on smaller boats to build their skills. Great memories and simple!

"Is this boat moving?" Captain Q's been at the Freixenet again. That's a pretty great pocket cruiser. Maybe not as bomb-proof as a Bristol or a Cape Dory, but you'll get there faster with that fin keel and blade rudder. Paceship had a decent reputation for quality of construction, as I recall. And $6900? That's early 70's money! I agree, this boat is a fantastic bargain, assuming no major invisible issues. You're absolutely right: someone needs to run, not walk to check this boat out and buy it. What a great opportunity.

Usually not one to comment but love your reviews. I purchased a ‘79 Paceship 26 in February and am currently getting it ready to drop in Lake Pepin in MN. Mine was a bit rougher but she’s a beast and that’s all being taken care of. For $2500 at the marina I planned to sail out of, I couldn’t pass it up. I grew up sailing an O’day 25 and the similarities are everywhere. But the 9’6 beam and 6’1 headroom makes the PY26 a much roomier boat. Can’t wait to get out and sail her this spring! Also, the aluminum slotted toe rail is a pretty dead giveaway that this is an American made AMF boat. The Canadian boats still had teak toe rails.

It was very nice to tour this boat. I just happen to own a Paceship P2-20 which would be this boat's smaller sister. I like mine because she's got a retractable keel and is easy to trailer to one or another of my local Finger Lakes here in central New York State. I also single hand my boat and it's not hard at all. However, mine does not have any fancy stuff on it. As a lake sailer I don't need radar although there are times when I wish I had a basic auto pilot. My boat has no formal head, but has a spot designed to house a port-a-potty. It also has a small sink which includes a 3 gallon water reservoir. It's got a v-berth up front and has two quarter berths in the main cabin. They can be used as cushioned bench seats during the day. In fact my boat includes a "shelf" that, after being relocated, doubles as a small dining or chart table that mounts over the housing for the retractable keel. My boat's auxiliary power is a 4 hp Evenrude outboard which does just fine.

You are on the mark about O'Day similarities. It is very much like my 25. One point of caution about that scupper, which looks identical: It probably runs through a short hose to the transom. If that hose leaks, your scupper empties inside the boat. Getting back in there to check it might require some contortion, especially with a big engine and diesel tank under deck. I suspect any work under there might be a challenge.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters Год назад
Good point! There is a connection between that scupper and the transom thru-hull just in front of the rudder… it would be interesting to see if there’s a hose there… seems like almost too short of a run…

I liked the segue from what sounded like the low notes of a sander to the buzz of a saxophone about 3:32! $75,000 is all relative. Just last night I saw a TV commercial for Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks. It sure looked impractical to me, little short bed and it was so high you'd need a catapult to load anything in it. Anyway, I was curious and checked the price of such a machine, $75,000 and it isn't even a diesel. I'd say the boat wins in that comparison.

He asked me why I liked the ocean. I said it's kind of like the feeling you can have for your land but, with land you always see something you need to work to change. The ocean you aren't going to change. When the worries of a boat get to you, it's just that tiny space on a huge ocean. You are right about that sailboat. A little bit and you can go a long time and a long way. If the Martins, Dave and later Jaja and later Chris and later Holly can sail full time on a Cal 25, what is possible for this boat? Geez, Holly Martin has sailed to the other side of the world on a Grinde 27. I don't know how a Paceship 26 compares to a Grinde 27 but, I do believe I'd take the Paceship.

That socket on the tiller may be for a tiller-extension/hiking stick, not auto-pilot. I see the extension was in the locker with the on-deck shower.

@YachtHunters Год назад
Good eye… there was definitely a fitting for a tiller extender but at the end of the tiller it seemed to be a pin for the auto pilot arm
@nobskafriend
@nobskafriend Год назад
@@YachtHunters Ah, I missed that! The fact that the socket that you pointed out was off center in the tiller (offset to starboard) sort of makes sense for a tiller-pilot (autopilot) more than for a hiking stick, since the tiller pilot usually does connect about that distance from rudder end of tiller. I’ll have to watch the video again, and look for the other socket. Always enjoy your sometimes humorous, always insightful reviews of these boats! Keep’em coming!

A guy had one of these Paceship 26es in the harbor on Mille Lacs Lake in central Minnesota where I slip my Precision 23. It was a shoal draft model and its name was Lite Brew. Judging by its skipper's belly it was the only lite brew he'd ever had. 😅 He was a good guy, and said he used to race it on Lake Pepin between WI and MN, and one time beat media mogul Stanley Hubbard. He was obviously very proud of having beaten a billionaire in a sailboat race. Not the most aesthetically pleasing boat due to the extended freeboard, which is how it has all that headroom.

Usually outboard engine but with a 15 inch prop she's a diesel. They are built like the proverbial sh!t house....they are fast, bulletproof, easy to maintain. I raced against them....against an 80 year old who could hold his own in it double handed. More than likely she was built in the US. They handle like a larger boat. To be honest , I think the C& C 27 is about the best starter boat out there, but I take this as a second. She'd hold her own if you got caught.

What became Paceship started out as hot-molded wooden small craft for the RCN. That know-how came from the UK, from the Mosquito aircraft and such. When the seventies sailing boom came up, Paceship made sailboats from fibreglass in Nova Scotia. Then AMF wanted to make everything from bowling balls to sailboats. Therefore, they bought the molds from Paceship, and then made the same boat in the US. I am willing to be contradicted here, but that is my understanding of the history of Paceship.I own a Paceship, so this is why I know this,

Michele Stevens sailmakers in Lunenburg has the patterns for all Paceship boats AFAIK. My Paceship has crisp Stevens sails. This is to say that, if you buy some old Paceship, Michele can cut new sails.

@@geraldhowse8597 LOL. For someone relatively experienced, this boat could certainly go around the world. There are many bigger, better, more well equipped boats for the inexperienced, but no doubt this could cross oceans safely. To make the trip? Wind Hippie Sailing (YT) is doing a circumnavigation in a comparably sized boat with less than this one has. Sam Holmes as well. If I were going to do something like that in this boat, I'd be looking at fresh water and fuel tankage. I'd make sure the standing rigging was rock solid, or replace it. Probably replace all running rigging. Some sort of wind-vane self-steering. Given how small that rudder is, I'd honestly have another fabricated and stowed for back-up. The Paceship I raced back in the day snapped the rudder. It was all our fault, but the thing snapped in half right below the water line. Having a backup would be trivial. I might throw a little more battery on their, and then some sort of solar panel (there are already davits) or other generative device to keep the batteries topped up. The crazy thing about this boat is everything I mentioned might clock in at $25,000(US) max. So, as someone else pointed out, a young couple with $30.000 could have an eminently sea-worthy boat with practically brand-new everything, cut-their teeth on a journey south to the Caribbean, and there is no limit from where to go next.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters Год назад
well said, Jeff! Wind vane steering would be tops on our list... as well as a solar panel or two... Jeff is spot on with the other items. cheers

Make not only suprerb historic sailing vessel video's but please slip in the odd ultra modern cruising yacht world. What are the boat builders of today making the boats we'll see videos about 50 years down the road?
