You do not need to have a TV license to ‘watch TV’, only for public funded content which is basically anything BBC and thats it. It includes internet services like BBC iPlayer, but not radio. Also the way they check for licenses is to send intimidating letters about inspections and potential fines and never show up for said inspections, and you legally don’t even need to let them in which is the only way they can gather evidence to issue a fine. Many people own multiple TVs and no license and they aren’t breaking the law in any way. The phrase ‘TV license’ should be thought of in the sense of a software license, not a drivers license. Basically a Netflix subscription but you can watch Netflix without it and they can’t do shit. Its a pointless relic and a waste of everyone’s time.

We have those fees in Germany as well, for the same reasons. It worked kinda similar the way you described it, but they just switched the rules over here so that now not every person but every household has to pay, no matter if you even have a TV or not. A computer with internet access is fine too, since you can use it to access public TV content on the internet. The idea behind those fees is to keep public TV unbiased and independent, but then again, public broadcasters have commercial breaks just as private TV has and not everybody trusts in the independence of the public broadcasters, so not everybody sees the value in mandatory payment like this. They really just should turn it into a voluntary subscription service, which they never will, since they would get less money this way and it would counter the idea of public "f(r)ee-TV".

@@brilobox2 I thought the same, but some people think this would make it "state media" and therefore take the independence from it. I guess there's no true "right" way to do it without someone being unhappy about it, but I feel mandatory fees aren't really a proper way to go about that.

the tv license in the uk cost £10 a month last i checked and funds the BBC so they don't have commercial breaks in their shows and you only need the license to watch live/broadcast tv, watching streaming sites or online shows doesn't require a license i have not had one for over ten years now as i only watch things online

If I recall correctly, the UK courts declared the TV license people to basically be the equivalent of door-to-door salesmen. Therefore, they have no powers really to investigate, and they can just have the door shut in their faces. There's a RU-vid channel called ChiliJonCarne that had a series of videos detailing how to deal with the TV license personnel.

Honestly, as a US citizen, I just don’t understand this. I just don’t get the legal or practical reasons for this, especially in this day and age when you can watch all sorts of stuff on the Internet, and you’re much better off, policing the Internet than individual televisions. It’s not like people are watching live 18+ content on cable TV anymore.

Not completely true about the tv license. If you watch live tv or BBC iplayer then you 'need' a license. If you dont, you dont have to pay it. Thing is that they cant prove what your watching does or doesnt require a license. Neither are you obligated to let them in if they come knocking (not that thats at all likely). I just love Soviets craft with the subtitles. The Honk in the bottle is silly but very funny. The things he has done with the subtitles is incredible. I think it was a dayz video where his character was casting a shadow in front of him and his subtitles were casting a shadow as well. Unnecessary but my god is it brilliantly edited.

So you dont really *have* to have one, they have no power to enforce it if you dont let them in. Its controversial but you get a lot for your money, the BBC makes loads of great content and all of their backlog is entirely free. Also if you dont watch your tv you do not have to pay.
