That's a great story and a perfect reminder of how times have changed. Phil's already a multi-millionaire who does not have to worry about long-term financial stability. This also reminds of why I wonder why the dinosaur coach carousal continues to revolve around the NHL. Just because a coach was considered good years ago doesn't mean he's still relevant. Rick Bowness in Winnipeg comes to mind. I am nowhere near an insider, but that guy seems to be a disaster in waiting.

Everyone I know that’s played for Rick Bowness has nothing but great things to say about him. He is a modern day player’s coach. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, perhaps keep it quiet.

@@user-md3ij9oc9q I know no more about what I'm talking about than you do. Did you play for "Bones"? What does a "modern day player's coach" mean? I'm not being snarky here; I'm genuinely curious.

@@matttilley8620 no I’ve never played for him but a know a bunch of guys that have and I know someone on his staff (well was on his staff). To say you know as much as me is a little silly, don’t you think? As far as what a player’s coach is… well if you don’t know what a player’s coach is… think back to the 1980s… exact opposite. As a player’s coach myself it has everything to do with this quote. “A person who feels appreciated will always do more than expected.” Doesn’t mean you are easy on them, doesn’t mean there is no accountability, doesn’t mean they are soft, means you treat your personnel with respect and show appreciation when they do something good. Think of the best boss you’ve had at work or teacher at school.. what made him the best boss/teacher and someone you’d do anything for? It’s usually bc they appreciated your contribution, treated you with respect and genuinely cared for you. That’s a player’s coach.

These podcasts are making clowns a whole lot of money to sit around and talk about how unfair they thought their coaches were when they were paid ten times as much as that coach was during his career.. So sad that NHLers had to endure being expected to be in the best shape possible when many would rather act like Phil Kessel and ride coat tails of superstars that were willing to put in the extra work that Phil never was. 😂

And with jokes aside, him not taking his weight seriously is why he’s no longer in the NHL

He played over 1200 games in the nhl with more than 400 goals, won a Stanley cup, at age 36 is a multi millionaire…what the heck are you talking about? That’s a great career.

Your podcast does not need the language you guys spoke. Bush League. Come on grow up.

right but this is how hockey players speak with each other. It never leaves their system, believe me.
