That John Scott all star game was the greatest all star game the NHL ever put on. The players and viewers both had shit eating grins on their faces throughout it. You had to feel good for the guy. It was great to see the league look stupid after that. I loved it. That was the last all star game that I watched, and it will likely stay that way.
As a Buffalonian I appreciate you hitting the way back machine on this one. So weird looking back and seeing the last years of what had been a fun Sabres era. Here’s to us finally not sucking this season 🍻
@@CreamerMusic Yay, they finished 10th place in the conference, up from 11th place the previous season. I am still a Sabres fan, but if your team can't make the playoffs in the NHL, it sucks. The NHL does not give out participation trophies.
During that scrum I didn't like either player. Well how times change, now Hotdog-Phil Kessel is a champ that I'll always remember fondly for embracing the hotdogs. John Scott turned out into the biggest feel good story I can remember from NHL and he's forever the beloved all-star captain. His stories about career of enforcer just won me over totally.
i love how in these kinds of videos, you take the time to dive deeper into each player’s character and their background leading up to the moment. you could just as easily tell the story in black & white how it is, but providing the color to the picture is what makes these videos so good. great job and keep up the good work
@@shawnhill4779dumb comment. Phil was a key piece of the back to back cups the Pens won in 16/17. Phil should’ve won the Conn Smythe in 2016. The only one you can say he was a ride along for is Vegas
Phil also has 3 cups, 1286 games played, 413 goals and 992 points. John Scott has what for his career? A KIA because the All Star game felt bad for him?
@@jacknone1564actually he has a long list of people that all received nightmares from him. You could tell PK was already on that list by the look in his eyes. 😂😂
This was on Carlyle for throwing Kessel to John Scott like a pork chop without telling him what he was getting himself into. The NHL bullied Scott to drop out of the All-Star game and then drove him out of the league when he didn't back down. The NHL brass have no class.
I still think it's wild that Kessel only got suspended for pre-season for a couple of the most egregious slashes with the twig, & when the player on the recieving end was tied up with two other guys & his legs were targeted to take him off balance. Especially considering he was in all likelihood not playing many more pre-seson games.
Its wild Scott didnt get suspended...clearly a match penalty when you attack someone who doesnt want to be a combatant with such a massive size difference
@@VisionThing lol 2 other players are tied up with your "assaulter" you're free to skate away and flee the "assault", instead you stick around and swing a weapon at their back side & legs. Like literally that would not hold up as self defense on the streets let alone a hockey game. Also relax he got shoved a couple times & challenged to a fight. His goons came to the rescue. Everyday hockey stuff. To make matters even more clear the bench & coach were warned. They knew what was going to happen. Get a grip. Assault 🤣
@@TRZN91 It didn’t go that far as Kessel was smart enough to chop at him, but had Scott gotten hold of Kessel he could’ve gotten a career-ending beating. That was no ordinary fight, do you see the size difference? Like what was he supposed to do?
This is even funnier having listened to some of John Scott's podcast. Dude does not give a fuck. Funny dude and I can totally see his personality at work here. He is giving the coach a heads up, and Scott salivated at the chance to call his bluff and shove it in the coach's face. Kessel is just Kessel. I remember watching this game. Those slashes are iconic.
Kessel has always been a punk. One of the reasons Crosby said no when he wanted to go back to Pgh. 😂 Kessel was never tough enough to fight anyone, but was always coward enough to slash another player multiple times. A real bum of a sportsman, and that's what counts the most, character.
Oh when you jump someone that is not up for fight and has not asked for one or deserved one... And when you are thick enough to do that jump on opponent's star player, it is aurprise there are not more people hitting you with sticks. Kessel, whack away :D
The broadcast commentary for this was great. “Vernier and Miller now jostling along. The last time a Leafs goalie was involved in something like this was Felix Potvin!” “ARE YAH WATCHING FELIX?”
Vegas Golden Knights LEGENDS Phil Kessel and David Clarkson. (Clarkson's LTIRetired contract was traded to Vegas by Columbus with a first so they would take William Karlsson and Phil Kessel is THE Phil Kessel)
I love that you did a deep dive on this as it's one of the funniest things i've seen take place in hockey. The slashes to the legs and the dig in the ribs especially makes me lose it. Hilarious.
Phil shouldn't have been suspended. Just defending himself by whatever means necessary. Scott.. I fucking hated the guy for this. You don't do that. You. Don't. Do. That. He rehabbed his rep with the all star game thing, I guess.. but.. still..
the weird thing about the Clarkson contract is that the Leafs re-acquired it when Clarkson was injured beyond repair, and used the LTIR to get under the cap. So the dreaded "back end" of what many consider one of the Worst. Contracts. Ever. ended up being a benefit to the Leafs.
John Scott said it was retaliation for going after someone else after he told the Leafs there were no real other fighters dressed for the Sabres, so if someone wanted to make a name for themselves, to go after him. I seem to remember the other Sabre being the one who initiated the previous fight, so it was his own fault.
@@theSlimJim actually same here. I'm just over the Detroit border and used to go to the Joe Louis arena a lot to watch Avs and wings games. Those definitely were dangerous times for me wearing my Avs Jersey there lol.
@@dereks1848 you were definitely taking your life into your own hands lol. I like how the rivalry has settled into a good natured memory. It's not as fun as it used to be, but there's less stitches.
@@theSlimJim me too. Yes it has definitely settled down. But many memories. To be honest I met Claude Lemieux in Toronto once and he didn't even say a word to me. Kinda a prick tbh.
Good for kessel. Skilled players shouldn’t have to deal with shit like that. Someone should have done the same to Scott stevens for all his cheap shots on star players
