In this video we look at the components of the keyless start system on the Range Rover Evoque. The keyfob talks to the radio receiver module that then passes its information onto the KVM for approval.
The module located under the steering column is called the IAU - Immobilizer Antenna Unit. It is used as a back up by detecting the transponder within the key fob through induction - the key fob doesn’t even need to have a battery installed. The code output from the transponder will be confirmed by the IAU - I think that’s where the known codes list is stored. Once the code is confirmed, the IAU communicates directly with the CJB, bypassing the KVM, allowing the start process to commence. Ref: TOPIx Workshop Manual 419-01B Anti-Theft - Passive
Absolutely brilliant vlog can't thank you enough. I had tried the key under the steering column with the buttons pointing down (as recommended by Rover) but it didn't work. It wasn't until I placed it edge on , as you did , that the car finally recognised the key. So grateful ....
Excellent video. Simon you have a truly gifted way to explain to others. You transform a regular person in a home made mechanic. Thank you for being an inspiration and for showing people that that is a lot of things that we can do in our own home 🏡. You guys are awesome 💪💪👍👍
@@L663just priced nearest dealer for a job a EURO shop screwed the pooch on. Dealer says roughly $2k USD for new KVM module and one key. They charge 2 hrs to replace the KVM, 1 hour to add key One key along they quoted $405, one hour programming at $255, emergency blade $155. That’s just adding a key at dealer. Sad thing is this customer had a working key. I’d attempted then backed away. Referred her to this guy after calling him and him saying he had VCI and so on to get it done. He whipped out a aftermarket scan tool for APPG2… At one point the car ran in emergency start mode then he attempted to add and things went to hell in a hand backer even worse and car would start. Can turn dash on by placing key in emergency slot location, remote works. We do get the key sense error. BTW the place ur placing the key below the steering column is an induction could as it induces the immobilizer, excites the coil and allows it to start.
There is more to the key. First there is the 433/315MHz door lock/open by pressing a button mechanism. The key usually is silent and only transmits if the button is pressed. The car detects this signal and locks/unlocks the doors Than we have the presence detection via RF in the moment you press the start/stop button and this operates with more antennaes, 4 or 5, scattered inside the car and trunk. That system is also used if you left your key in the trunk and slam the hatch: it will not lock if the key is present in the car. This presence detection is rather good, 10cm inside/outside of the car makes a difference even though the hatch is only made from plastics. The start/stop button commands the engine control, which in turn asks the NFC under the steering wheel and the RF key presence detectors by sending out an query to the key, the key translates the query using its number, the translated message is sent back, either RF or NFC, and the engine compares if the right translation had been done. So the key contains 3 different wireless systems. That why it is so bulky. I know, that when you leave your car, do not lock it, wait until the electronics shut down which takes some minutes, you hear relay clicking and turn off the instrument cluster and center console, and THAN press the button of the key to lock the car while far away, the key will not work anymore to start the car. If you repeat this some later day, let the unlocked car go to sleep and lock it from far away, it may work again. Somehow the synchronisation is lost.
The irony is that although this system is a severe handicap for the person that owns the vehicle, it is no problem at all for the thief that steals your car, he just uses a scanner and is off in your car quicker than you can start it yourself, so much for modern, unreliable electronics. Stay safe!
This trick with the key fob pad under the steering column works even for when the key fob battery is flat. On other brands of vehicles it may work by holding the fob to the start button or the fob might be required to be inserted into a specific slot in the dash.
Complex stuff Simon. The interesting bit for me is the under column sensor because I always have found that is hard to make work..it takes me several goes before the car will start. The other thing is that I only need to do anything with it about every two years and the key fob battery charge doesn’t seem to be the problem because fitting a new battery does not always bring an instant solution BUT after a day or so, it does. I’m pleased to learn of the module locations just in case I need this in future but for now, I’m good…🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🙏🙏😃😃😃😃😃
Hi, Great videos, I had the same issue today with my 18 Disco 5, locked it went for a walk with the kids and Dog came back and key wouldn't work. Opened it with the manual key and held to the steering column and got home , feared the worst and assumed it was the KVM, decided to disconnect the battery for 60 seconds in the hope it might reboot the ECUs and low and behold it worked. Key is working prefect again. Hopefully just a clich and not the start of the end for the Module
Have you experienced the car locking itself with the keys in the car . L494 only fault listed is audio aerial. D door lock button lit orange all the time. Key aerial recognised kvm ok .
I need help my friend. I have this problem with my Evoque 2013. The key works well, but as soon I leave the car under the sun, the key doest not recognize by the car. I need to manually open the car and start ignition with the trick under the wheel. Then the car cools down and the key starts working again. What do you think is the problem?
Similar issues with the jag xfs they sometimes they loose the keys codes if the car battery is replaced, bcm needs to be made virgin and reprogrammed, sometimes they need to be replaced and loads of messing around in SSD - id take a turn key crank anyday over all this messing
I did hear that its best to leave your lights on when you change your battery - this reduces the risk of current surge ? not sure if this is true - but apparently its a thing !
Only one time use for those who don’t know. As a locksmith we reuse the old one using industry tools to clone the missing remotes out to the new key with the rfa on the bench.
In correct, the keyless proximity data is stored in the KVM & the Emergency start data is stored in the BCM, So if your key stops working keyless, naturally you’ll put the key on the emergency override
That last point is very interesting. Did you try another key from another Evoque against the near field sensor to see if it worked at all? I wouldn’t have thought it would or else any Evoque key would start any other Evoque thus making it a thieves paradise.
Super helpful video, have made a video or have any suggestions, tips on how to determine if it is the KVM or RF Receiver not working, and recognizing the proper key, Im trying not to replace both as they can be $$$
Good morning, friend, can you help me? I have a 2010 range rover sport, I bought it at an auction and it came without a key, ask the dealer and call for a new one, they ask for $3,000 and I don't have that amount. on ebay they sell a complete kit that brings the KVM BCM, IMMOBILIZER, THE RFA, AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WITH THE KEYS, WILL THIS WORK WITHOUT THE NEED TO PROGRAM?
Hello. I know its been a while since you posted this video and not sure if you ever got your answer about the extra connector next to the KVM which you asked about in the video. I believe it is for the passive keyless entry. There are two types of modules in some of these cars. The non-passive and the passive. The passive one has three male connectors the non-passive has only two. Which makes me wonder if it would be possible to transform a non-passive vehicle into a passive one by simply exchanging the non-passive kvm with a passive one, reprogramming, and adding door handle sensors, since the wiring is already there?
Same issue with Jaguars .. looks like all the same kit in the same manufacturing period. If you don't allow the car to fully shut down before disconnecting the main battery .... you risk loosing access to the key address book - and your car.
It is in the headlining under the roof aerial -it is a small box velro'd to the roof. You can release the rubber trim around the tailgate and reach in - there is a clip holding the headlining up in the center about 6 inches from the rear - sometimes you can pop this off to make access easier
Great video. This really helped me. I sent my KVM to Kwatronics, paid £150 for a repair, plugged it in but still no response from the key fobs(fobs checked by a lock smith). My next task is to remove the radio receiver unit but I’m stuck. It seems too tight when going through the light hatch in the roof lining, how did you guys manage it?
Hi Tom - does the car work if you hold the key against the steering column ? I wonder if the Telematioc Control unit battery could be a problem ? Have you had the fault codes read from the car ?
@@L663 that’s a new one for me. The car starts with NFC. I’ve already ordered an RF unit so will fit it and see if that makes a difference. The chap at Kwatronics said to let him know the fault code once I get a locksmith to plug in a diagnostic tool.
My new defender has constantly had the “smartkey not recognised “ problem since it arrived. Ive had a new module of some sorts fitted under warranty but its made little difference. The biggest pain is getting called constantly by by in control to check if the car has been stolen 😡
I believe it probable that once you are into the car, which may require the use of the mechanical key if the system is down or the key fob has a flat battery, then any LR key at all of that general type will allow the car to be started using the proximity method you show. Only one way to find out…..
Thanks for the great video, my daughters Evoque has started saying key not found over the last few weeks so she just moves the key closer to the steering column but not the position shown in the video and it starts so thought it was just a week signal from the fob. Fitted new battery but still the same so could it be an issue with the amplifier receiving the signal.
Check she does not have a wireless charger in use - this can interfere with the signal from the key - also other add on electronics in car can cause issues.
I am from Mexico and I have a very similar fault only that my key does not open the doors or do any function, it only turns on when I put it under the steering wheel. Could you help me?
Yes there are 3 things 1 - Keyfob faulty / battery - do you have another keyfob to try ? 2 - Radio receiver module - next to the mirror in the headlining 3 - KVM module - this is the most expensive thing - you can get this fixed or take to dealer for replacement.
@@L663 thanks broo Do you have any instagram or some means to be able to send you video of what the truck does to me and something that I notice is missing inside the cabin
Hi Edwin, Alex here. I have the same Issue with my 2011 Lr4 nothing works with the fob. Car only starts under the steering wheel Have u fixed ur issue?
HI I like some help if can ,got 2016 RangeRover with faulty RFA so prox key dont work can I use 2014 RFA just plug it and do new keys by obd as my scan tool goes up to 2015 then board encriped thanks if can help.
Hi Simon, I wanted to reprogram the keys for Range Rover Evoque sd4 2013. I think it could solve my problem but from programmer I got a message that there is a problem with the immo. I bought new KVM and would like to connect it and program. I am bit afraid to disconnect the battery. If I disconect the battery can it cause the reset of all modules? I don't know how to program them back. Could you please let me know? Thanks and kind regards Jake
Hello hello, thanks for these great vids. I have a 2016 L405. On the car ferry to France I discovered that my key had not be recognised when trying to start the car. After locking and unlocking the car this fault was remedied. I now have to carry out this procedure every time I want to start the car. Any ideas?
@@L663 Hello and thanks for this speedy response. After thinking about the situation, how about this? When the locking system is in 'keyless entry' mode, is there a certain amount of time that the 'push start' button has to be pressed after entering the car? Whilst on the ferry, I made my way to the car, unlocked it and got in, then proceeded to wait until told to drive off. it was then that the key was 'not found'. could this be the issue? The same happened on the way back home.
Hello friend I am from Sri Lanka i was watched your videos regular… I have 2010 discover 4 UK speck… I have same problem key not found… I bought a nee key fob from UK my technician couldn’t program he said I have replace KVM..So I just try to get KVM on eBay… how do I get correct KVM from UK it should be Mach vehicle vin number?
This is tricky - the KVM needs to be coded to the car and the keys. You can often send the KVM to a specialist to recode / repair. Also make sure you do not have a phone charger in the car - this can interfere with the keyless start. Also it could be a problem with an antenna in the car. Does the emergency key start function work ?
hello very good video. I have a problem with a discovery sport I took out the kvm to copy keys and the kvm no longer recognizes me. It only gives the emergency departure (I already replaced the glass) Regards
Hi just wondering is there any chance to unlock the dash/ start the car or unlock the park brake. I have only one key but dropped it and now won't unlock the car by remote, I have used the aluminium key to enter through my driver's side door into the car but my remote can not be found on the dash, I have changed the battery in the remote and its definitely not that, my remote is ruined any options starting or unlocking the dash?
Hi simon iam from ct and bought a 2012 range rover evoque coupe without the cluster so i went on ebay and bought a (L538) 2.OL TURBO ENGINE ECM IMMOBILIZER MODULE KEY SET installed it and it doesn’t wants to fire up . Has all kind of warning lights including transmission fault any idea what else needs to be changed or what to do to get it running?
Interesting this - to prevent vehicle theft Land Rover has put in a lot of measures - i think the cluster is coded to the car and all modules check that they have the same chassis number progrmmed into them. I am not sure but I think you need to get the info wiped from the cluster and program it as a new cluster on the car using the Pathfinder software.
Thank you for the video,so what about range Rover dynamic 2021 the car is flood it's showing me the key is not detect and RFA is not look like damage,so please what did I do. Am locksmiths thank you.
If ur a locksmith and you touch a flooded car and don’t get it running and it’s a Customer car they are going to have a fun day with you It’s one of those cases of, you touched it last so you are responsible unless you own this vehicle and failed to mention that?
Sir i have a question am watching from Uganda am girl and am doing automotive engineering we have a Range Rover vogue 2020 it the smart key is not recognized unless u press it under the steering column that’s when it works we tried to check the telematics,KVM and the antenna even the fuses there all in good condition but the key isn’t recognized still .what maybe the problem.we were told that the car was in good condition by the time it was brought to Uganda but the situation started when the customer was trying to view or to have a look at the car.
Thanks sir by the way we worked on the but the game was on security like we could not program other keys due to the security of the car but what we did is we erased the key and then we programmed that very key corresponding with the KVM
Hey guys i have a weird double click sound coming from the kvm area, it happens after the car locks or unlocks its mad anyone else have that? 2012 evoque
@KING UPLOADER ohh no not at all, never had that issue at all. I fixed 3 out of 4 door lock on my doors and have had to change the battery on both keys after I got the car though so maybe I skipped that issue
From Chile: I have seen several very good videos of you. I have the following problem my range rover sport 2016 ran out of battery and never left again (I stop recognizing the key) a new key was made (KVM intervention) and this if it recognizes but does not boot someone told me that with the SDD JLR software the modules must be synchronized which I do not do I am buying the Software to see if I can make it boot. I ask you if you have any idea how to do it???
Yes it would if I am not able to replace the crystal oscillator myself. New one has been soldered in place but did not work. I fear I overheated it with an air gun.@@simonjefferson
I had the same on my XF. Read a bunch of theories which cost from 600gpb. Then a guy saved me by reflashing the CJB module with jlr sdd with TeamViewer. Both keys work now
My Freelander 2 has started not recognising my key on every occasion too I can be driving the car and it will come up with can’t find the Key on my dash 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Hi Please Please HELP I am getting no crank from the start push button gone through all the things you have explained and no luck....some one said try the Starter Relay ....Can you tell me where the relay is located Pretty Please I have a range rover evoque 2012 Tommy Liverpool.
Yes its very similar if not the same ! ( just looked at the parts manual and seems to be the same - although the KVM seems to be in the roof from the picture? ) Do you have a spare key to try ? 99% of the time its the key. The radio receiver can go wrong but not often.
My key won’t open the car, but will start it. I’ve been told I need a new KVM as my girlfriend’s Evoque has already had the maximum of five keys programmed to it. Mainly because the car keeps losing the ability to communicate with its keys and it needs new ones programmed! Truly fed up of this car - now going to cost £1350 to sort. Will message the guys at kwatronics to see if they can help 👍
Hi I have a disco sport . I have 2 fobs ….I have 1 that does what it’s meant too . The other no longer works on the key fob buttons , it starts the car . Jlr have said it sounds like kvm. But how so when I have a fob that works ? ( I haven’t booked it in with them as they have quoted nearly 1k . So why wont my 2nd key work ? @powerfulukltd
My bet would be that if it starts the car the KVM is fine - I would just use the IID tool ( or similar ) to add a new keyfob. We did this on our new Defenderru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ji2u_a5AAdQ.html
