Range Rover Review: Should You Buy A USED Range Rover?

This week I got to spend some time behind the wheel of this 2014 Range Rover HSE trim. This is the 'full size' Range, called the Vogue in certain markets, but simply referred to as THE Range Rover here in the states. These luxury SUV's typically run about $100k when new (even in relatively base form) and unfortunately depreciate like boats. They also have a reputation of being unreliable... This leaves many people wondering whether it's a good idea to buy a USED Range Rover.
I have had the opportunity to spend a good deal of time in this particular Range, as it is owned by a good friend of mine, and I have seen that it is has been largely RELIABLE for the duration of its ownership. With that said, I break down some of the common issues that may occur, and also what you get for your money when you choose to buy a used Range Rover instead of a new car at the same price point.
Of course you often give up a warranty and that 'new car smell' but in return you get more leather trimming than you'd know what to do with, massaging seats, air suspension... and a FRIDGE :) Check the video out to see more!!

@@fordstone2725 Another thing I advise - because I always do this when I buy a used vehicle - take it to a dealer or reputable Rover mechanic as soon as you buy it (I prefer the dealer for my Rover) and have it put through the most intensive service they have, to include looking for problems not currently known or seen, and fix them if found. Doing that has always kept me out of service departments after that first initial service. Then I absolutely know I'm starting off in good shape. You have a warranty, but I think you'd come out even better spending your money on the front-end and hopefully never need to use the warranty. Just advise that has worked for me. I hope you enjoy it. I really really like mine, and it's my 3rd. Ive had a 2010, a previous 2014 with the V6, now this insane V8. I've never had any problems.

@@carycoller3140 of course that’s my plan already, the car also comes with an 90 day warranty, and that’s an plus, there’s also an dealership not to fare from me and I have already made an connection with them about the truck, looked up the vin and it was in deeded serviced with range over, also going to change the rotors, brakes, etc, but their also willing to change the brakes, but not what I would like, therefore going to do that on my own.. ceramic brakes, etc. good looking, be safe out there. Also did the Kelly blue book, so there asking price is on time also, but going to see if we can negotiate on the price as well,

I bought a 2014 for $27,000, I had it checked out by my local professional car auto repair shop and they told me nothing was wrong with it, it just needed a oil change and new tires they even told me the shocks still looked like new which was shocking because the shocks on range rovers are the first to go bad but the one I purchased was still new. I love my choice of buying it, now that it's winter where I'm from the range rover is so cozy and handles the snowy roads/weather very well.

@thomascannone4254
@thomascannone4254 2 года назад
Rules for buying a pre-owned car. 1) let depreciation set in. Time is the best friend in the luxury car world. 2) 1 owner cars are usually the best cars. I'd rather buy a 1 owner vehicle with 135k then a 4 owner car with 60k. Think about that. 3) service and maintenance. With a 1 owner vehicle, you know 1 person took care of it for all those miles. It goes a long way when considering a luxury vehicle such as a Range Rover. 4) Accidents. Let's be honest, accidents and such happen, the majority of accidents reported are "cosmetic" in nature, with minor dings and dents. Always be aware of the severity of the accident and the location of where it occured. Lastly, LR/RR get a bad reputation on it's history, but have made strides in being a more reliable brand over the years. Toyota has recalled over 3200 cars for reported transmission issues, does this make Toyota bad? Or unreliable? Will the Range Rover need more up keep? Yes. Is it worth it? I will leave that to you. But, think about what you'd rather be spending your time in after a long hard day's work.

Coming from a family who only drives range/land rovers (my mom has a 2019 velar, my dad has a 2020 RR Sport, my sister has an 08 RR sport, my brother has a 2016 LR discovery, I drove a 2014 LR4 (now I drove an Volvo XC90 r-design). Before the 2020 & 2019 my parents had 2014 & 2016s, they have only ever had these vehicles because there a symbol of how they made it in life and how safe they are, my dad loves the convience. We have not had a SINGLE major issue with any of our range/land rovers. My sisters 08 had to get a new transmission last year when it hit 130k miles, but that's it. My parents havnt seen any issues either. My moms 2016 Range Rover sport before her velar had air suspension issues in 2018, but that was the only issue. It all depends on how you take care of your car. Make sure you have all the Scheduled maintenance done on time and address any issues wether it's a weird smell or different noise coming from anywhere done ASAP, on top of just driving responsibly...

I bought a 2017 RR Sport new and I was a little leery about the LR-RR brand but rolled the dice anyway and couldn't be happier . Within my company we have BMW's, Mercedes and a Tesla and this Range Rover, and by far the Range rover is the most reliable and has the best quality of materials and construction. I wouldn't hesitate to by a used RR. I would definitely buy a used RR before the BMW or Mercedes and definitely not a Tesla as that car in our fleet it the worst of all of them. I now have over 80K miles and have had zero issues other a minor software issue when the system upgraded to AppleCare but now with that feature its better than ever. I do not think I would buy new if I was to purchase one myself for my personal vehicle but I would buy used.

I just bought a 2015 RR Autobiography 5.0 supercharged with the rear executive seating and an enhanced performance package. It is completely blacked out except for the red Brembo brake calipers. Black Piano finished interior with silver accent. Absolutely in love with this vehicle !!! It just continues to amaze me. 29 speakers. So quite inside as far as road noise. Paid $100,000 less than original price.

I bet its so quiet esp with the 5.0 , I personally think RR/LR age very very well compared to most and at 2015 RR will have all the mod cons that some cars dont even have today.

My first car was a 2003 RR HSE. Next was a 2011 RR HSE. A week ago I sold the 2011. In the 5 years I owned it I had to replace the transmission $5K, air struts 2K and other smaller items. When I sold it the front AC Blower wasn't working which would've cost $2.5K. I told myself I was going to get a lexus instead. Put a deposit on a 2018 GX 460. Soon as the car came in and I got inside I knew I couldn't do it. The 2018 interior looked older than my 2011 RR. So I did what any sane person would. I bought a 2016 RR Suoercharged. It has 57K miles and I purchased a 5 year/125K warranty. I don't think I'll ever buy another brand. The drive, the look and the prestige is unmatched

I agree with your assessment! I bought a certified pre-owned 2016 Land Rover Range Rover HSE in 2018. Knock on wood but its been a very reliable vehicle. The only issue is the windshield. The windshield has wires in them so it will defrost snow. Kind of silly since I live in California but it came with the car. I'm on my third windshield and its got a chip on it now. I have a zero deductible comprehensive insurance so its not a big deal other than the hassle of taking it in. I have a friend with a 2017 Range Rover sport. same issue. He is on his third windshield too. Other than that, the car's been great. Interesting to note too that the wheels stay aligned quite well. I don't take it off roading but my previous BMW X5's alignment was constantly off. Tires don't wear out as much as my X5 either. Anyway, I like the ride and the looks of the Ranger Rover. Especially the front. To me, the curved headlights looks better Than the squared up look of the newer version.

We are family of Rovers and still own 4 to date and enjoy each if them regularly. We have no issues to complain with and we also own Toyotas etc. The Range Rover ownership is really not bad like what they say as far as reliability etc. We have no issues with any gremlins even on our old Discovery 2’ (we own 2 D2’s and total of 5 Rovers with 2 of them being a 2021 phev models). Other brands needs modification to offroad but rovers dont and maybe taller sidewall tires is all if you do hardcore wheeling and thats it. Most cant afford the repairs due to to the brand but to each his or her own really. Cheers !

Great review! I’m just recently bought my fourth big body Range Rover. Really appreciate a honest and fair review. It gets so old hearing people complain about the reliability of RRs especially used ones. Maybe some of the bad comments/reviews are from people that have heard of someone else complaining because they themselves may not be in a position to purchase one. I realize some will have issues as will any auto brand. I have been lucky and have not experienced any problems with any of mine. I did have to replace the brakes and pads on my 2016. Admittedly that was expensive but it was after 4 years of owning it and as you said these are not light SUVs. I love the look, ride and drive of all the RR’s I have owned and would not by another. I’m very loyal to the brand and believe when buying a used one, just like with any car, so much depends on the previous owner and how maintained.
@Reoniz

There are many factors forsure, and maintenance, when it comes, will be expensive. My opinion is that if you enjoy the car and drive it a ton, some maintenance is worth the experience !!

How much did it cost to service brakes and how service it? Thanks
@chitown1098
@chitown1098 3 года назад
@@sidneyhill7064 - I took it to a LR dealer where I use to have faith in their service department. New GM fired all the service managers that had been their for years to bring his own people in. I was told I needed new brakes and tires as well as a minor service. I honestly don’t remember exactly what the brakes/pads cost but I do remember when I went to pick it up the service receptionist gave me a bill for $4,000. Obviously I went slightly postal when I saw a $750 service charge for something I was texted that it needed but had not heard of it and a $500 increase in the quoted price of the brake pads. The next day I entered the service area being sure they and every customer knew I was there. After demanding the service manager he proceeded to tell me he made a mistake in the quote for the brake pads because mine was a 8 cylinder Supercharged model and he quoted based on a 6 cylinder. I found this funny considering he was looking at my truck on his computer when he quoted me. The $750 charge, according to the service manager was a service for models with either 50,000 miles or 5 years old. I pointed out mine was 1 1/2 years old with 9,000 miles. I said what the hell then. He said we texted you that you needed this and you ok’d it so we cannot refund you but since I would not have recommended this service I will discount your new tires by the $750. Yea right. So if you take the $4,000 and deduct the $750 and $500 you get the approximate cost of the brakes plus the minor service which would be $2750. I went down the street to a Mercedes dealer, ordered the tires, had the, put on, aligned and balanced and it was still cheaper than the LR dealer with the $750 discount. I do not blame my RR, just the crooked dealer.
@sidneyhill7064
@sidneyhill7064 3 года назад
The dealership for the most part are crooked, I have a certified independent mechanic I deal with, I could get brake pads and rotors all around plus service fee for under $900. Theirs alot places you can purchase tires like Simpletires.com for example and have them shipped to wherever you want them installed at. As a matter if fact I will be doing that in the next 2-3 months on my 2015 range rover hse 22 inch tires. Depending on the tires I choose I'm looking to spend $900 -$1200 on tires plus installation.
@chitown1098

@@sidneyhill7064 - Thanks. That’s good to know. My problem was that no one could order the 22 inch or at least that is what they said. I do need to find a good independent service place. The dealership I was talking about had a fantastic honest service department before the change of the GM.

I have a 2016 and I bought it in 2019 with 34K miles from original owner who bought it brand new and who always had it serviced at the LR dealership. The car is perfect... barely have suspension faults where you simply just have to drive below 50 MPH or simply restart. 100% buy a used one owner RR HSE 2016 or newer. Honestly ive had 3 range rovers alredy two of them were bought used 1. was new i made 100k km before i have sold it (no major issues in 4 years happened) 2. i still have it curently at 110k km 3 years old no major issues the only one is with rear parking sensors sometimes glitching and not wanting to stop bliping for 20sec) 3. curently at 200k km 9 years old and no major issues yet the only one was with a leak) so my answer on should u buy one used is: if u make a good check on its past if it looks good and if its a decent price go for it. And yes i havent driven them only to a mall i have put some preassure on them like a little bit of snow offroading and driving in some deep mud and i can tell u they impress me every time i drive them they go everywhere u take them, they drive good and the driving position is amazing.

I’ve owned 7 rovers, currently has 2, both are 17 hse v8 supercharged, these suvs are bar non best suv ive owned, I had x5m, srt jeep, escalades, and this suv in its v8 supercharged form, with the 22” wheels is the best. It’s the s550 benz of suvs, smooth, powerful, grab attention, and with the 17 models having an updated dash and infotainment system it just makes it that much nicer to own and drive.

Great video and truthful but Who ever you go to that chargers a few thousand dollars for brakes I would definitely never use them again. If your air bags blow and they will over time and usually do because they have had a flat and has lifted it up without turning the air bags off or due to a dead battery for an excessive amount of time and it sat lowered you can easily just convert it over to springs and shocks for around $1000-2000 they make a kit for it. With any automobile you have your hood and bad also it always depends on how well you care for the car. I have seen rovers with over 200k miles without any major problems but it was serviced regular and not driven like it was a race car. I do like buying used vs buying new because of the resale value does suck but a 3-4 year old very low mileage luxury vehicle with all the bells and whistles for half off is a great deal. They do have bad reps but all vehicles do it’s all depends on what you like. Chevy people hate ford and so forth so on.

This is actually great advice... while I think Range Rover's get a bad rap, a 45k used Range almost certainly will cost you more in maintenance than a new $45k car... It's just that the new $45k car won't be as luxurious or have the provenance of a Range (but at a cost of course)
