I got my Ranger R76RTF tire machine almost a year ago now. I wanted to spend some time using it before I did a review. I have to say, I really enjoy using this machine. I particularly like the 'Power Assist'. It's made mounting tires so much easier. In fact, I use it all the time now.
The only stand outs with this machine that I think are worth mentioning are that you need to provide adequate space behind the machine so that the boom arm can swing back. You're also going to have to run a dedicated 220v power supply to the unit. I'm finding that's true for most shop equipment.
Thanks for watching!

Some advice from an ex-tire fitter.......so, don't take this the wrong way. 1) I never, ever, clamp a wheel from the inside. I always clamp the wheel from the outside. Then you can be 100% sure the wheel is secure and level, it won't slip (particularly if the wheel is wet) when removing a tire and the head won't scratch the rim. 2) When removing tire, alloys can be easily be marked/dented/scratched when you leave the tire lever on the wheel while you rotate the plate. I usually pull the sidewall over the head and support the tire as I pull the lever out then rotate the plate. Trust me, I've seen it millions of times with other tire fitters/mechanics when changing tires on alloy wheels leaving marks from cowboy fitters. 3) Get a cheap used non-serrated knife with a wooden handle for cutting off valve stems. Don't use a razor blade, too small and they slip easy with gloves. 4) Read up on what the yellow and red painted dots on the side of new tires are for, it'll help you with balancing of the tire etc. Please don't take any offence, just sharing my knowledge. Happy tire fitting!
@mrman17
@mrman17 8 лет назад
+Robert Thomas This was more of a review of the machine than a "how to", but you are right, especially with the dots on the tyre walls and the lines around the circumference for lateral run-out, etc. Too many tyre fitters ignore this.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 8 лет назад
+Robert Thomas No offense taken. Thanks for the input. I do know about the dots and use them whenever possible. I clamp the wheels on the inside because it's easier for me. If one starts to slip because of CV boot grease or something like that I'll clamp on the outside. Thanks again for the advice.

I work at a local walmart installing tires. And most of what i see him doing is just a no for me. And I'm surprised he didn't use tire bead sealer. I suppose as long as the rim is very clean you shouldn't technically need it. lol
@nik12937
@nik12937 8 лет назад
+KingConker101 Bead sealer is a last resort if the tire still doesn't seal after cleaning the rim. I hate doing tires on vehicles that go to other places normally for that exact reason, then I have to spend 20 minutes just cleaning off all the old sealer. Clean the damn rim and don't be lazy.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 8 лет назад
+KingConker101 I fiiggin HATE bead sealer. In fact, I refused to even buy any from my supplier. If you've ever had to spend a half hour cleaning it off of a wheel, I don't think you would use it either. In my opinion, bead sealer is the lazy mans way out.

Ive used this machine minus the side arm for a few years.Its been a good machine.The problems I had were the valves on the pedals had nylon spacers that didnt hold up but I believe they cured that issue.The tire gauge lasted about a year.The oiler blew through the oil too fast and didnt regulate well.Because of the price Ill probably buy another one.I used it to also dismount low boy tires although Im sure this wasnt meant to be used for this.It handled it but stressed the motor

the bead breaker adjustment (for wheels above or bellow 10") is reffering to width of the rim. you said its for diameter, but the little sticker at 7:32 measures width, not diameter

I'm expecting to see a video of you doing some reverse mount 24" wheels with $85 chinese made 25 series sidewall tires in the coming weeks. I'm joking of course. Lol. My brother and I own a wheel repair shop and we deal with that kind of stuff on a daily basis. Can be a major pain in the ass at times. Always love those cheap chinese tires that behave more like hard plastic than rubber. Keep up the good work Eric. I continue to be amazed by how far you've come since you started.

that's a great edition to your shop. I'm glad you decided to put some good quality Michelin Tires on the Nissan. As for the arm hitting the wall, personally I usually just put some sort of adhesive padding on the back of whatever hits the wall so that it doesn't create a dent, sort of like the ones that people put underneath chair legs to prevent them from scratching the floor, something to that effect. assuming it doesn't have an adjustable extension limiter to prevent that from happening.

The plastic mounting heads are great insurance against scratching up nice alloy wheels. The time it takes to swap the metal one for the plastic one is worth it. 1 scratch = mad customer and $$ out of your pocket. Not good. Plastic heads wear quickly, but they're worth it! And the Rema 930 tire knife is a lot nicer than a razor blade. Love those things.

The horozontal wheel on the power assist is for when tyres fall down and stick back to the bead after you have taken the top bead off so you dont have to awkwardly take the half removed wheel and tyre back to the bead breaker. Very common with bridgstone tyres

I bought a 13 years old Ranger equivalent of this from a high volume race car shop. There must had been thousands of wheel went through it before my ownership. The bead breaker cylinder shaft is bent as well as totally wrecked on the surface so it just destroy the o-ring seals. Unfortunately I had to buy an entire costly OEM cylinder as the aftermarket ones that I can find in the US are all smaller. Just got it up and running today as soon as the cylinder arrived. I am just learning how to dismount and mount a tire and managed one. I have many race cars with wide and low profile tires so a cheap tire changer will not work for those.

That's one fancy tire macheen. It can make armpit stars come out. Any real car guy's shop should have one. That way you can buy cheap used tires from wrecking yards to do lots of burnouts. I was using a May 'tire matic' (1940's wheel bender/grinder) & recently upgraded to a Coates rim clamp unit... I hate having to take a tire to a shop now.

+SpotterJacob I remember changing a tire and when I was seating the top bead, I had to push the sidewall down with my hand, and my hand got caught between the bead and the rim. Stars did come out, and so did tears. I was wearing work gloves and yet, it was painful as hell. Had to use the machine to spin the tire the other way to unseat the bead and free my hand. Luckily no injuries. Be careful, kids!

I don't work with tires often so I don't use valve stem installers. I just put the cap on halfway, stick needle nose into the gap just below the cap and use the flange as a fulcrum just as with the actual tool. You can ruin the threads on the plastic cap but that's not the end of the world.

I could mount and balance 4 15" tires in 20 minutes back in my 20's. I always enjoyed working on cars but you just can't make any money doing it anymore. My father did well back in the 70s and 80s but nowadays it's just not worth it. I still work on cars but on the side, for myself. I still don't make very much money working for myself. Anyways, the machine seems to be nice but I like an air table better, they're faster. Also I like the bead breaker activating button on the handle itself, but that's just personal preference. Nice machine it seems.

I'm curious about the tire balancing machine you bough and I'm looking forward to see the review. I hope you managed to afford to buy one with road-force balancing, like some machines from Hunter. Standard machines only try to correctly center the mass of the wheel so that centrifugal forces are evenly distributed and cancel themselves out while the wheel is rotating. "Road-force" goes beyond that and accounts for the own tire forces that are generated while rolling on the road with weight in it (irregularities on the tire surface and sidewalls). It even tells you what are the tires that are better match as a pair, to allow better wheel alignment, etc I can say from personal experience (as a customer), balancing with road-force is another level... Once I tried it, I never want to go back to regular tire balancing. Keep the good work and the great videos coming :)

You can use a lot of different 1/4" tools in it, carbide burrs, sanding discs and more, you just need to watch the rpm rating on the tool, they run around 10,000 rpm so putting a wire wheel rated for 4,000 in them is not a good idea.

Guessing this machine is expensive, what one would suite a hobbyist who may want to work on self and friends cars, maybe expand from there?

Here's a thought... I wonder if +EricTheCarGuy is Mike Rowe's Cousin or something... they have very similar mannerisms and they are both awesome so it make sense.

Note to anyone watching also, If you grip the rim on the outside, do not inflate like that. You'll seat the tyre onto the machine.

Is the tire "goo" the stuff that keeps the seal? Or is it the rubber pressing against the rim that creates the seal?
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 8 лет назад
+Kasra Sadeghian No, it's just a lubricant. Helps things go together easier. The 'bead' of the tire seals against the rim. As long as it's clean, you don't need to use any sealer. That's why I cleaned the wheel the way I did.

If you know what you're doing, you can practically break it anywhere. Just depends on the pressure and angle you use

Great review Eric! I'm not a tire guy, but at 16:15 is the tire supposed to go over the top of both sides of the head like that?
@Raspotin
@Raspotin 8 лет назад
Yes it is.
@February54

+Loebane The head forces the bead under the rim while preventing the rim from damaging the bead.

You should totally fabricate a left side rack for all the tools to have them handy. Or maybe even buy one, i think saw some on eBay a year ago, should be some still.

+aserta Between the storage on the balancer and the tire machine I have plenty of space to put tire stuff. I like the way you think though.
