This video shows you how to change tires without damaging TPMS sensors. The information in this video came at a price as I've broken a few TPMS sensors while changing tires in the past. I hope this information helps you avoid the same fate so that you can save yourself the time, hassle, and expense of breaking one of these sensors while changing a tire.

I think breaking a TPMS sensor is kind of like breaking a fly-by-wire throttle body. Your bound to do it at least once.

It depends on the OEM. Ford’s proprietary version is dumb and you to break the bead 180° opposite of what Eric is showing. I’ve come close to destroying more than a few but if you’re aware of it and you follow directions, you won’t break one. I’ve had a few that disintegrated on me but never did I break one myself.

Watching this video brought back great memories of my time as a tire tech… I learned a while ago a trick to undo the sensor from the hole and let it drop down when breaking the bead and unseating the rim. I know it’s not the “proper” way of doing things but I never broke a sensor. Ever. Of course then again, I never relied on that method all the time. Kind of a stickler to being “by the books” but working at a quick lube and tire shop, time was money so that shortcut was necessary but absolutely wrong.

This is good advice, but be aware of Ford wheels. Some Ford wheels have hidden sensors. I always break the beads with the valve at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions. The hidden sensors are most of the time on the opposite side of the valve so in those 12 and 6 position you wouldn't have to worry about breaking off a hidden sensor from the metal strap. The ford wheels even says sometimes that there may be senors inside.
@SmittySmithsonite
@SmittySmithsonite 7 лет назад
The clock position depends on where your "duck bill" is located - on my chinese tire machine, it's at 3 o'clock - I would tell people you want the TPMS sensor to be a about 2 inches BEFORE the duck bill for tire removal, and then 180° from that for installation. :)

what you can also do Eric is before you start undo the nut and drop the valve into the wheel. ideally the correct procedure when replacing tyres is to service the valves with either new seals and a new nut or replacement stems if available. I carry a set of oe valve stems for tpms and replacement universal valves. If you want me to grab the company name.for you to look into that supplies the kits give me a shout

hey eric. I work at a tire shop and just so you know best place to break the bead is with the valve stem straight up and down since most ford's and some other vehicles have band sensors located directly on the other side of the valve stem where you placed it

Something to note when breaking the bead, wheels that have band TPMS sensors, the sensor is generally located opposite of the valve. So your safest just to keep the valve at 12 o'clock.

nice video eric! Im going to be starting a mobile shop soon out of a 8.5x20 foot trailer and will be offering tire mounting and wheel balance also changing my tires on my 2014 F150 soon. i was able to score a hunter tc3250 tire machine with pneumatic ram for dirt cheap from a land rover dealership that was upgrading theirs to the newer hunter tc 3900's. needed some new seals and parts but i was able to get them from a hunter rep and some air fittings from grainger and now it works like new. only sucky part is it doesnt have the floating assist arm like yours so I use a rim clamp for low pros. im planning on upgrading to one like yours. also buying a hunter DST30P wheel balancer.

i do 12 and 6 for breaking beads, place the sensor at the head (not all machines are at 12) and when installing i keep the sensor just past the pinch point of the tire (on the lef of the two points where the lower bead sits before you turn the wheel to install) that has always worked for me regardless of brand. also as others have said, watch out for fords with the band style the are 180 from the stem.

What details does a person using hand tools need to know? Should the first tire iron go into the tire just to the right of the valve stem like you did here, or should it go right on top of the valve stem? It looks to me like you start inserting the tire just under a quarter turn from the valve stem and then work away from the valve stem with a second tire iron to approximate what you did here manually with tire irons. Is that right?

We had same problem on one of our cars (2009 Nissan Sentra). I followed this instructions: 1. Paper clip into white connector. 2. Tough glound 6-10 times, then once more (TPMS should go into the learning (blinking) mode). 3. Set tire pressure: Front L - 34 psi, Front R - 31, Rear R - 29, Rear L - 26 psi. Drive slow ~ 1 block, light goes off, then come back sturdy. 4. Add pressure to tires (33 psi Nissan) 5. Drive ~ 1 block, the light gone. Another more detailed description (fm/one review on Amazon): Set your tire pressures accordingly: LF 36, RF 33, RR, 30, RL 27. Doesn't have to be exact, but get it as close as possible. Ensure your car is off. Look under the dash, by the ODB2 connector. A little further up should be a small white harness with a single wire going to it (my wire was green, harness was white.) Mine was taped to the ODB2 wiring. Get a small paperclip, must be all metal, not coated or colored, unbend it and insert it into the connector on the harness. There's two entry points, you must connect to the side in which the green wire is connected. Turn your key cylinder to the "On" position but don't turn the engine on. Within 10 seconds, tap the other end of the paper clip to ground 5x. I found the metal plate in which the ODB2 sensor is mounted to is a good ground. I also found that sometimes 5 taps doesn't work, so I just keep tapping for 10 seconds, it doesn't matter if you go over the 5x count. I tap at the rate of 2x/second. If you've done this properly, your TPMS light will switch from solid on to blinking. If you're sensor has recently gone bad, you'll notice your TPMS light blinks for about a minute after going to "On," so theres no easy way to know if you're in learning mode. The best way to tell is once you start driving, your tire pressure status screen will remain "*" for all four tires. If the other 3 good sensors register within the first 30 seconds, you are not in learning mode, start over. Once in learning mode, start your car, put your display on the Tire Pressure status screen. Begin driving over 40mph for several minutes. I've found that the two times I've done this I had to drive approximately 3-5 miles. Slowly, one by one, each sensor will register. Once all four sensors register, you are all set. your TPMS light may come back on solid as one of your tires is too low (rear left.) Go back and adjust your tire pressures back to the appropriate pressures. That's it. You're all set. For me the sensor was $30, install and balance was $~50, but I have oversized aftermarket rims so there was an upcharge. Install is usually $20-30, so you are looking at ~$50-80 in total using this method.

I just took my truck to Walmart and had new tires installed, now 3 out of 4 valve stems are leaking around the base of the valve stem. The TPMS system I have is ITM Uni-sensor, I took my truck back and they don't carry the type of valve stems to replace these. I have contacted the store manager and she is going to talk with the Tire and Lube manager and get back with me. I told the manager that I believe the store should replace my damaged TPMS system with a new one at no cost to me.

Always keep the sensor IN FRONT of the bead when mounting. Not crossing the bead, not behind. Some Fords have bands opposite of the valve stem, so employ same methods, just make sure it's not where the sensor is mounted. Always spray TPMS to identify any leaks in the unit, both where the valve core goes, as well as around where the nut goes.

When using the bead breaker line the valve stem at 12 o'clock and bust beads in at 3 and 9o'clock because fords sometimes use band sensors so you never want to but the bead 180 degrees from the valve stem.

A dealership installed new tires and when I picked up my car I asked them why the TPMS sensor was flashing. They told me oh no it’s fine all the tires have the right pressure it’s just cold out so that’s probably why. Now I know the sensor is not working but they will only replace it if it’s busted not died from natural causes they say. Problem is I don’t have 6 hours to drive to and from that same dealership for them to maybe replace it. How could I know if it is damaged or just died?

There is a method of making a little PVC pressure vessel to keep in the car someplace with the sensors inside.

Reason I even ask...mine have leaked from day one. As far as the light on the dash...that's been on so long I don't even notice anymore. I live in Tennessee...we don't have inspections. Just want to go back to the "old school" way.

Now... If only Walmart's tire center employees watch this, it would be one less fuck up

if you're working on Ford's be careful. some use banded sensors so the sensor will actually be 180 degrees from the stem.

I remember scratching a few brand new rims when trying to remove the tire off of it 😂😂😂 One little scratch and we needed to order a new one. Ouch!

I was changing my tires about a year and half ago or so, I was adding air and the bead would not seat. even my teacher had a hard time doing it. after a few tries it finally set.

Now do it with 30 or 35 series summer tires, I always like a challenge! Practice makes perfect though.

The arm assist on my machine is very helpful with those kinds of tires, but you're right, they are a PITA.

What kind of tires where those? If you don't mind me asking.

Alfredo - If you're referring to the tires Eric was removing, those were Bridgestone Blizzaks. Fairly decent winter tire, if you don't run them to baldness. If you were referring to the tires he was installing, on the other hand - those were Nokian WRG3 tires, SUV variety (there's a variant for passenger cars as well); some of the best all-weather tires in the world, according to stats.

I took off a set of Blizzaks and put on a set of Nokian NTyre 2.0's.

Huh... could've sworn I saw the insignia for WRG3 SUV tires... eh - must've imagined it. ^_^; eNTyre's still a solid choice. Nicely done, Eric. :)

Hi Eric. Where do you get your Nokians? I'm about to put on some zLines in my Audi. Can't wait to see how they do.
