Matt Rempe scored the first of the New York Rangers' three goals in a span of 2 minutes and 6 of the second period in a 4-1 win against the Washington Capitals in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Jimmy Vesey had a goal and an assist, and Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider scored for New York, the No. 1 seed in the Metropolitan Division which won the Presidents' Trophy as the top team during the regular season (55-23-4). Igor Shesterkin made 20 saves.
Martin Fehervary scored, and Charlie Lindgren made 27 saves in his Stanley Cup Playoff debut for the Capitals, the second wild card from the Eastern Conference.

Panarin put New York ahead 2-0 at 4:50 with a wrist shot from the right circle. He led the Rangers and was fourth in the NHL with 120 points (49 goals, 71 assists) during the regular season.
