What choice do Toronto have? 1. Mitch will never waive his NMC unless it comes with an extension. 2. No team out there is insane enough to commit to that much term and money for a guy with his reputation. 3. He will play out his contract and leave as a free agent. 4. Any trade talk involving Mitch or JT for that matter is pure fantasy.

They do have 20M in cap space, but would any team really want a contract that is that bad on their books for 3 more years? 3.6M aav is rough you could get a really good 3rd liner that could score you 20G for that price relatively easily. I seriously doubt he gets claimed, I think he signs with one of 5 teams in free agency, either CGY, SEA, FLA, TB or TOR. Hes from Toronto and they could badly use a guy like him in the playoffs. Imagine a 4th line that consists of Goodrow and Reaves centered by a little lightning bolt like Dewar or something. Would be a really good energy 4th line.

@@JPMadden it's income tax can't get around that. This is why teams in Florida and Texas get discounts because no income tax. You're thinking businesses who can fudge profits and such or have money in stocks so they don't earn any money as ceos. These guys get taxed out the ass and no legal loophole will get them out of it.

They want to trade him, but they're realizing that Marner is going to exercise his right to not waive his NMC and stay in Toronto to close out the season. The extension talk is because they are scrambling in an effort to try not to lose him for nothing in free agency next year.

Marner and his camp can use their leverage to try and stay in Toronto but if the Leafs are adamant about him not returning, they would sit him. Both sides know if Mitch wants that 90+ million dollar extension, he’s going to have to play hockey next year and the Leafs are in sole control of that.

@@aarongrace Sitting him doesn't benefit anybody. There's zero chance they would do that. It wouldn't diminish Marner's stock to not play the year exercising his right.

@@Marixa1979 you are correct in that it benefits neither side. However, Mitch is going to want at least 11.5x8 (same as Willy) if not more. If you are his camp, you want that before going into next season since to get same total gross value, he would need to make over 13 a year on a 7 year deal, which is not going to happen in a realistic world (just like sitting him a year isn’t going to realistically happen). However, say you hold him out for the preseason and the first month of the season in hopes of a trade but that never appears so you bring him back to the lineup without an extension. Now he’s behind everyone else and instead of pushing 100 points, he’s closer to a point-per-game for 65-70 games. The Leafs have already decided the cap space is preferable and you hit the market on a down year based on pace and you can’t get the 8th year. Instead of 92 million guaranteed (11.5x8), you get 77 million guaranteed on a long term deal (11x7), presuming he doesn’t take a short term deal. That 15 million is why Marner will waive his NMC.

@@aarongrace You're leaving out how it likely hurts the Leafs in the standings, and how you handle this situation will 100% impact other free agents' willingness to sign with Toronto going forward. They signed Marner and gave him a NMC and if they choose to punish Marner down the road for it as it suits them, other players will be less willing to sign with Toronto. Reputation is at stake.

Raymond and seider are rfas. They have until the start of the season. Kane is hopefully gone. The teams defense was way better without him than with him and the offense without him versus with him and a full healthy larkin and compher was actually worse

@@judistzoinkiski3395 the UFAs opens up on July 1, so if he wants to guarantee to keep any of them (i.e. Kane), then he needs to do so sooner than later. Obviously you’ll need to resign Raymond and Sieder first to make sure how much cap space you have afterwards for the rest.

@@JarradBruessel32 yes they are RFAs, however, there’s a cap space, so if you filled out all the UFAs before them and have nothing left, well they might not want to come back after next year. So you sign them long terms now so that you can play with the space for the rest. Hopefully Kane is back, he’s a point per game, unlike any of the other UFAs

@@McSomething15 If Marner played less afraid to get to the dirty areas and had better puck possession in the playoffs I'd bet he would produce more points. It's just he looks like a completely different player come playoff time.

Aside from going the regular season over a point a game, to the playoffs and under a point a game, consistently. Hard to shake the memories of a crucially bad-timed puck over the glass, or not noticing Pasternak blowing into the zone on the set play (although Morgan Reilly and and Sammy also missed their opportunities to remedy the situation). But what can the Leafs management do at this point? Dubas and Shanahan gave him the 11 mill and no-trade clause. The Leafs extended Reilly with more money, Nylander with more money, and of course Matthews with more money. How can Mitch not expect an extension with . . more money? The only thing that can be done is one more swing at the plate and let him go onto the market at the likely end of another early playoff exit in 2025. Sad, but there it is.
