Made me think and reevaluate life and caused me migraines. They are outstandingly good episodes, mere perfection.

I love that this comments section is discussing underrated episodes instead of shit-talking your choices. It speaks volumes about the quality of the show and how well it resonates with people.

The shot in Time’s Arrow, where the background is a hellish fire and you see her mother’s shadow while a pained scream cries out the only true detail is her lobotomy mark, is one of if not the most haunting shots in the show. After the lobotomy Beatrice’s mother is only a shadowy presence, a haunting, a ghost of her former self. It truly terrifies me every time.

Something I realize constantly is how mature Todd becomes, in the final season he’s the most mature out of the main 5.

Favourite joke is the asexual humour they bring out. It's one thing to have actual representation but it's another to incorporate that into the show so beautifully that the jokes serve to help the audience understand and relate without it seeming preachy at all. I just realized this Sarah Lynn's catchphrase is "that's too much man" and her cause of death is an overdose. I should have seen it coming.

I remember when Todd's "I think I might be nothing" line aired. I was just getting into the show, and a few asexual groups I was in on Facebook were latching onto the line, hoping and praying it would lead to canon ace rep. As someone who had gone through this kind of thing before, I wasn't going to get my hopes up. If Todd was ace, great, and if he wasn't, that was fine too, the show was already one of my favourites. And then they actually said the word. And they introduced other asexuals. And showed the colours of the flag on the meet up sign. It occurred to me when watching all of this that I'd never actually heard the words "I'm asexual" on a TV show before. It made me so unexpectedly happy, and still does even after however many rewatches. The bojack horseman team did more to give us asexual representation than any other show I've seen so far, and I will never not love the show for that.

I remember when I first watched escape from LA, I was 16 so just a year shy of Penny's age and while we are not that similar, I understood why she'd find comfort in a relationship with BoJack. I understood it was terrible, but I resonated with how she wanted to be treated like an adult and BoJack spoke to her like an equal. I didn't ship them, I just understood it. Then when I rewatched it as a 22 year old, I could clearly see how BoJack was not acting his own age and how creepy it was for him to go to prom with a bunch of teenagers. He didn't speak to Penny like an equal because he respected her that much, his own emotional maturity is just stunted. These things that didn't seem strange to me at first became obvious when I was a bit older. It proved that Penny really didn't understand what she was getting into with BoJack, because at her age, I didn't understand it fully. That difference in perspective really hit me when I thought about it.

i really respect that you ranked "good damage" above "stupid piece of shit." i think they both do a fantastic job of conveying depression through art, but "good damage" is far more helpful for those who want to break free of that cycle.

I read Cuddlywhiskers's line about giving everything up in a completely different way. When he says that you must give everything up to be happy, the view cuts back and shows his gorgeous property where he can be at peace. It's an interesting commentary on what giving up everything actually means when Cuddlywhiskers is still rich and lives in such a wonderful place.

The ending shot in Angela has to be my favourite ending to an episode. The direct cut from a young and ambitious Bojack doing his screen test in the 80s to the reflection of Bojack in the present (depressed, old, spiralling into his old addictions) is so powerful.

When Todd came out as asexual I legit cried. There's not a lot of ace representation in popular media, so it was a really validating moment for me.

What's crazy about Escape From LA is that the first time you watch it, you don't realize how creepy Bojack's actions are. My first time watching it I was rooting for him in my head during the prom scene, and the balloon scene. Then watching it over again recently, the entire episode I just felt uncomfortable and creeped out. The way they mask the creepiness with a typical sitcom premise is masterful.

It's interesting how most of the trauma in Bojacks family can be traced back to Crackerjack's death in one way or another. And how it doesn't get remarked on. Not least because he was one of millions, and how much other trauma must be out there because of the war even generations later.

My favorite thing about Bojack has, and always will be, the fact that it reels you in with comedic and zany situations and, just completely out of nowhere, the jokes slow down and take a backseat and it morphs into a full-blown drama, but by the time you realize that, it's already too late. You're hooked, and you can't stop watching. Not because it's funny and entertaining, but because you care about these silly people with animal heads, and want to see them succeed. Even the ones who are obviously not good people.

Most relatable scene in BoJack: BoJack is supposed to be making breakfast but munches on an open box of cookies instead, all the while telling himself it’s not real breakfast food and to cut it out.

I think bojack the feminist is one of the most underrated episodes in the series, while being so funny, it also concludes on a serious note and bojack learns something and changes for the better

Something random I noticed upon my rewatch of the show - in the “Bojack the feminist” episode, the whole shenanigans of that episode start when Bojack was on the talk show and said “don’t choke women” - which I think was a definite foreshadow to him choking Gina later in the season. This might’ve been obvious to everyone else but I remember having to do a double take after re-watching that scene. Gave me the creeps.

Diane saying "I think all you are is the things that you do" really stuck with me. Even just today, during a fight with a close friend, it gave me perspective. It helped me to separate my experience with that person from the things that have happened to them, because yes they didn't have an easy life by any means, but that doesn't justify or explain away the things they've done that hurt me. All you are is the the things that you do.

42:00, I personally think that "the shot" was the one moment that has massive impact till the rest of the show. If they didn't shoot the shot, kelsey never been fired. Probably bojack never goes to new mexico, there will be no penny story which culminates in Sarah Lynn's dead and Hollywoo Reporter scandal.

Eddie getting mad at Bojack for saving him hit me harder than anything else in the entire show

Live fast Diane Nguyen is VERY underrated what her brothers did to him was extremely abusive and it shows how even as the most capable of them all she still gets bullied and her opinions doesn't really seem to matter because she is the "daughter" of the house I think the episode gives a very good introduction to what diane had been through and how her identity was never accepted

Not sure if intentional, but I think "Our Story is a D Story" is the point when the show really changed over, became a lot stronger and started to come into its own, and my headcanon is that that's because the story is no longer grounded in real Hollywood, but is now allowed to be its own thing in Hollywoo

"I should stop expecting you to be a good person so I don't get hurt when your not." Todd says it to bojack when he learns about the sabotaged rock opera. That line meant a lot to me. As simple as it is, I really needed that advice when I first heard it. Sometimes, you just need to accept that people are gonna keep hurting you. I'll never forget that

What I really love about 'brrap brrap pew pew' is how PC initially displays a sort of jealousy towards Diane. It isn't always easy and clean-cut to support your friends, but in the end she's able to put it aside to help a friend. It highlights PC's character arc in a brutal and real way. She wants to do everything herself, she wants the best, but she can't always do it alone.

Something I’m learning from watching the series a second time is how princess Carolyn and Diane are completely codependent on bojack’s chaos. They both have their own arcs learning how to get over him, have boundaries, and just make their own lives better. It reads so genuine. It makes me wonder what the creators’ relationship to addiction is.

Beatrice seeing her mom after the surgery made me cry the first time and i still tear up thinking about it, it’s a real traumatic experience for a mom who’s partner would do that to her, and a child that sees her mom but deep down knows she’s not there anymore, truly depressing and well written

I can’t count the amount of times I went, “Hollyhock, noooo 🥺” while watching Bojack for the first time through.

I love the symbolism behind the flashbacks revealing the origins of Bojack’s drinking because each time, it shows someone else pressuring him into drinking at an earlier and earlier age, suggesting it was his career, or his friendships, or his father, but ultimately the first time he drank was entirely his choice. Kind of hammers home how at the end of the day, while the rest of the world around him sucked, he made the choice

Every time I watch the church scene at the end of The Face of Depression I burst out crying. Him being around other horses and taking that sigh of relief at the end of the service just gets me.

Another thing that I love in the episode with Yolanda’s over sexual famil is how, sometimes, as someone on the asexual spectrum, that’s what the world feels like. The world is strangely over sexual when you look at it through an asexual lense

thank you for giving princess carolyn the credit she deserves. i've seen so many bojack reviews that either gloss over, or entirely ignore PC's character. she is one of the most well rounded, complex, and enjoyable characters on the show. "say anything" was the first episode in the series that made me realize the quality and genius of the show. it sucks to see that PC isn't talked about nearly enough.

STRONG disagree on The Kidney Stays in the Picture. The episode plays off Todd's insecurities and delves so far into his childhood in such an amazing way. For most of the early series Todd didn't have confidence. He avoided talking about himself and when he did he was defensive or self deprecating. In season 5 Todd starts finally appreciating his own life direction, aimless as it may be. Jorge opens up all of those old insecurities again, and shows us how Todd lost all of his motivation in his childhood. Showing Todd struggle with his past relations was honestly a beautiful way of finishing his arc.

This is my favorite show. My friends and family just see it as a “dumb cartoon” but if they would just watch it they wound see it’s so deep and meaningful. I love how well thought out it all is.

Y'know todd uses the music from his rock opera's finale as his ringtone later on in the show. I like to imagine he's moved past the sour bits and at least appreciates the fun they (or at least he had) making it. Perhaps not fully, but enough to enjoy it as something he tried.

the chicken episode is a truly good commentary about factory farming and the moral dilemma of eating animals, the power of advertisiments over facts, food industry in general, and so many other subjects. its a shame everyone seems to mock a great episode just because they dont want to acknowledge taking part in hurting animals. it tells something about ”ThE sOciEtY” that an animal rights themed episode is the only episode people actively hate, in a series like bojack where there are so much hard to swallow pills and difficult, painful themes in every season. people are ready and willing to talk about almost any other subject as long as its not animal rights.

The amount of friends I have who watched the first three episodes and deemed the entire thing as shit is unbelievable. I'm like PLEASE give my favourite show a chance, I promise it gets better!!!!!

the amelia airhart story is one of my favorites and its really, really underrated. i personally love it a lot as someone from north carolina and it really makes me feel more connected to pc and i understand *so* much of her motivations just from the setting, its fantastic and all the little jokes about the state really get me.

FINALLY someone who appreciates just how brilliant The Old Sugarman Place is as an episode.

I love all the Princess Carolyn centered episodes (she's my favorite character too) but "Time's Arrow" made me more emotional than any episode of any TV show I've ever seen. I've re-watched it twice and it still makes me cry.

Free churro is my favourite episode of Bojack horseman, but it left me completely mind-blown just watching Will Arnet speaking continuously for 25 minutes was an absolute masterpiece. Knowing how Bojack despises his mother and making jokes towards her saying "knock twice if..." to take a jab at her but also still show that even in death he's still seeking some sort of validation from her really made me shocked. After it cut to credits the only word that came from my mouth was... Wow

Great ranking, but personally, I think Angela should’ve been much higher. That episode tends to get overshadowed by the episode that comes after, and it saddens me, because for me the episode is almost as haunting as The View from Halfway Down and has some truly cutting moments. The line “Do it for Sarah Lynn, doesn’t she deserve more than to be remembered as the girl you killed?” sends chills down my spine every time. Their whole casual conversation about erasing Bojack from Horsin’ around forever in Angela’s dimly lit mansion is the perfect atmosphere, and the ending scene of Bojack breaking into his old house and officially hitting rock bottom is absolutely chilling and one of my favorite scenes in the whole show.

I hated that BoJack was so easy to like, only to watch him self destruct and take ppl with him. Also- them showing Diane gain weight and keep it when she started SSRIs. Fantastic representation, breaking the stereotype of "skinny and beautifully depressed"

Undeniably The View From Halfway Down will forever and always be my favorite episode of anything ever. The feeling when you realize what's going on. All the talk about what makes life meaningful. Secretariat's titular poem really hit me hard. The music and background ambiance was astonishing and I'll never forget how I first felt listening to that poem. That feeling of... "I don't want to go but it's too late and nothing I can do can change it" hit me so close to home and I will never forget this masterpiece of an episode

This show has made me cry three times but the one that made me cry the most was the scene where he sees Sarah Lynn’s photo on the wall at rehab and begins to participate in the activities. I cried even harder during my rewatch after knowing what happens with his sobriety

I find it incredibly interesting how you can relate to "Good Damage" because of your similarities of your experience as a writer to Dianes struggles in that episode. Because I also related very hard to that episode, but I am not creative in the slightest; my relation to the episode stems from the heartbreakingly real depiction of depression and the process of getting through drepession; from the little things like not realizing an entire day has gone by to the big things like coping with the meds, the change in personality, the fear of what being dependent on meds for the rest of your life. I'm not even saying that your interpretation of the episode is wrong: Quite the contrary. I think it just speaks volumes about the brilliance of the writers that so many people, from different positions, can look upon that episode and relate to it.

Todd's original voice is sooo deeper than what they chose here in Brazil, lol! Todd here sounds like a pothead with a "just out of teenage years" voice. It's so weird listening to him with that very manly voice. I like Bojack Horseman brazilian voice actors, though.

i always knew my favourite bojack arc was the old sugarman place, but i had no idea others felt the same way. god even watching this video was difficult, this show is truly astounding in how much it helps and hurts

That one episode with the scene of Bojack through the door giving a speech to the class had me in tears. It was just a moment for him and the other two to slip away from the reality of the situation, and I just felt so heartbroken for Diane especially. I don't know, it just how for so long she had tried and tried to support him and gave him the benefit of the doubt so many times in hope for Bojacks change, and when she finally sees him in a positive light, it's also the time where she discovers how he'd stooped even lower with learning the reality of the Sarah Lynn situation. I'm so glad she managed to get out of LA, as well as her friendship with Bojack

I’m glad “The Old Sugarman Place” made it to the top. For a while, “Time’s Arrow” was my favourite, but after further reflection, it was replaced. Mathew Broderick & Jane Krakowski were stellar in Season 4.

The Best That ever Happened is so personal to be, I remember being exactly like PC with an ex and that “I love you as much as I can love anyone” just ruined me. I was never enough and always trying to make things work and wanted to stay around, fix things and be acknowledged.

Love the episode when Diane goes to Vietnam. It’s so underrated. Same with The Amelia Earhart story. They’re my favorite characters

You’re sleeping on That Went Well, but I’m also the type who likes episodes about handling character deaths just as much if not more than episodes where the character dies. Putting the fallout of Sarah Lynn’s death against the payoff to every running joke throughout the season was an inspired touch. Deep moments of sadness balanced by a moment of pure hilarity.

I think Good Damage is underappreciated. Definitely an episode I go back and watch on it's own. Granted the whole storyline of Diane properly managing her depression is really powerful to me, and Good Damage plays a big role in that.

I had watched each bojack series as it was released on Netflix but recently went back and watched it all again over a weekend and it was a completely different experience. Almost every episode took on a different meaning which led to 'The view from halfway down' being one of the most effective and brilliant episodes of tv I've ever seen. Really enjoyed this list.
