15:26 unrelated, but this just reminded me of my favorite joke in the whole game when Crump looks into the camera and says “Hey I know that YOU know what’s going on, let’s let Mario figure it out himself” I was not expecting that at all and it had me DYING.
They do this twice (the first time is with frankly) but honestly the time that crump does it is actually funnier, because it's actually admitting self awareness to a plot hole and having fun with it. I write stories with similar bits of 'awareness' (though not as blatant against the fourth wall) so when I see real media making moves like these it amuses me.
The thing that makes Macho Grubba even better is that he is the only boss that actually uses the power of the Crystal Star he has to his advantage. He literally Power Lifts every turn
@@danielgonzalez-vm5lj "Guh... Guh... Guh huh huh!! Take a look at the TRUE power of the crystal stars, chumps!" *violently explodes* You got 50 star points!
It would’ve been a neat idea if all the bosses were able to use the power of their crystal star. Hooktail creating tremors Magnus stopping time Cortez being able to heal himself even more, etc
@@ironwolf677 it kinda makes sense why some didnt use them Hooktail literally ate it Smorg didnt even had it Magnus 2.0 probably not enough SP Tho yea it would be nice if magnus 1.0 would be able to freeze you for 2 turns after he is at like 5 HP or less as a last ditch efford Doopliss being able to use art attack to deal 3 damage to both Mario and the current partner or 6 damage to whoever is in front and Cortez maybe healing with his cristal star instead of absorbing the audience
@@danielgonzalez-vm5lj I'm with Bringle in imagining that Doopliss did use the power of the star and that he can't fully steal a person's identity or transform other people on his own. I also like to think Cortez's apparent immortality originally came from the star he had, but that's a pretty big stretch. Either way, I agree that giving all of the chapter bosses a clear connection to the power of their stars would have been really cool.
The game actually indirectly explains the Doopliss debuff in the final chapter! An NPC in Chapter 4 states that “you can use incredibly powerful magic if nobody knows your name”, and by the time you rematch Doopliss… the party know his name, and so are no longer vulnerable to the magic he uses to steal Mario’s identity. I doubt he’d forget that, so he doesn’t bother using magic robbed of its power.
RE: Doopliss not being able to completely overtake you in the Palace fight That was a 'no one spoke His name to him' thing, not a 'crystal star' thing; His name has been shared, & so He lost the twisted magic that came with it;
I imagine he would need the power of the star to do a full identity steal, it's just that speaking his true name is sort of natural counter to that type of magic, akin to the "true love's kiss" counter in some fairy tales.
@@Applemangh Plus he was still Mario after you called out his name. It's only after you collect the Crystal Star that he doesn't do the body steal again.
Something worth noting with the Red Bones fight and to a less extent the fuzzy horde is that they weren't just introductions to their fights and what the game has to offer, but also demonstrating the power of the GameCube. The N64 couldn't handle that many NPCs on screen at once so it's was IS's way of showing the leap in technology.
I always had the headcanon that the iron adonis twins were as strong as they are due to Grubba placing them there in an effort to gatekeep the major league and maintain a hierarchy to stop up and coming fighters from disrupting the order of operations. Maintain the "fighting" as a business rather than just as a pure sport. Its the same reason he gives his fighters conditions to satisify
Bro I thought I was going insane. Every time I've heard people talk about those enemies, they say that they're the "Iron Herriers" I've always known them as the Iron Adonis Twins and I have no idea where or why the names are different.
@@Beeggamr69 when you enter the ring with them, Grubba says his usual spiel and goes “blah blah iron Adonis twins! Yup, a fight to the finish with the armored harriers!” So I think their true name is the armored harriers, and the iron Adonis twins is their glitzville stage name, kinda like all the rest of the fighters have a stage name. Like hamma, bamma, and flare are really just the hammer bros trio. So grubba says both, again lol. That make sense?
If Bowser canonically falls from the Gloomtail boss chamber, it makes me imagine he and Kammy get stuck in there when Mario shifts the layout of the Palace in the riddle tower. Like they were pushing through the Palace too and just got struck in there and trapped, and then Bowser kept pounding the floor until he fell through
Great video! Honestly, I was shocked macho Grubba was number one, as I thought he was a good but not fantastic boss fight; however, on my switch playthrough, I completely steamrolled him because he got frozen by the stage effects for almost the whole fight. Also, I think it’s interesting you say your biggest gripe with shadow queen is she doesn’t have as much build up, she doesn’t show up before the very end; I actually think that’s part of why she’s my top choice. I loved the mystery surrounding her, and I think it’s a trope I personally love, seeing an ancient, resurrected evil revealed their final form at the end of the game/movie/book. Overall another fantastic video! I started binging your channel when I was recovering from wisdom teeth surgery, and I love seeing your updates.
A cool little detail I like about the Blooper fight is that it’s very obviously an homage to the Blooper mini boss fights from Toad Town sewers in 64. The fact that so many of these cool bosses can be ranked so low is just proof how stacked this game’s boss roster is
@@321cheeseman I know that but be honest did you like the chapter that has the most annoying puzzles the worst partner in the game and a boss that has the same strength as a boss from the previous chapter(chapter 7 is easily the best nothing can change my mind about that)
@@KuwaitMaps I quite like both the boss and the partner, and honestly no puzzles in this game really stand out as particularly great or terrible to me. With backtracking fixed in the remake I really don't have many complaints about chapter 4.
i actually love the shadow queen art in the thumbnail shes adorable, i wish i could draw, but of course doopliss is incredible too, props to whoever drew them
@@pvoes1 I've been drawing off and on for close to 10 years, and while I've improved a little bit... I still suck at it. If 10 years of practice isn't gonna do it, I don't think practice is working for me. Some people are just bad at things, and that's fine. It's good to have ambition, and it's good to encourage others, but "anyone can draw" kinda undermines the insane amount of time and talent and effort that goes into art. It is NOT an easy task that anyone can just walk into and become a master at with a little practice.
So I just realized something. You didn't include the first fight against Crump from the Prologue here in the boss fight rankings. This was a huge missed potential on Nintendo's part, since I think you left it out because it isn't tattle-able since Goombella isn't in your party yet. They 1000% should have used this as a way to introduce the concept of the trash can in Professor Frankly's house. There isn't a tutorial on it anywhere, there's no other fight in the game that forces you to not Tattle, and lets the players organically find out about the concept without shoving it down your throat too much.
@@S.I.L. I suppose Wonky telling you is fair I guess, but a lot of players don't even go to see or use Wonky, and it makes no sense for Wonky to know that imo.
@@TheBonehead1997 To be fair missed boss tattles add about as much to completion as the secret badges he also tells you about. And then there's the secret in front of creepy steeple... a whopping 1 coin.
I don't think it'd work like that, the trash can being empty when you first see it is what made me notice when it wasn't. If it were full when you first see it then it wouldn't stand out as odd, you'd just assume it's always like that and always will be
@@Pearl_Blossom The point is, Professor Frankly would notice and say something. It'd be a small additional bit at the beginning, and would give every character/boss a Tattle as opposed to having one random fight at the beginning not having a single Tattle in the whole game.
A bit of info on Whacka: you actually don't need to beat the game to unlock him. You just need to complete the Pit of 100 Trials, then whack Whacka 8 times on Keelhaul Key. Once you've done that, after a little bit you'll get an email letting you know he's moved to the Pit, where you can throw hands with him on Floor 100.
Watching the video now, but the Cortez fight is just so good. Music is one of my favorites in the game, you are fighting a giant pirate ghost skeleton, and the regeneration mechanic (with changing forms) makes him feel super unique.
The comedy aspect of Whacka's fight was ON POINT, like first he begins the fight thinking its a game and then the Dark Souls-esque vocals kick in lol, followed by overly epic and silly music for a cute little mole. I love how he fights with his own bumps, he even has a move that hurts himself on purpose to stock up on bumps. Another hilarious fact about Whacka is his health, apparently it is the equivalent to 666 in eastern cultures, making his innocence and Goombella's tattle even more menacing but funny at the same time.
0:08 There I am Gary there I am!!!!!!! Thank you for making this video!! I think having a distinct ranked list as opposed to a tier list works just fine. It feels a lot more definitive than dropping bosses into 'A' or 'D' tier without much to say, and I think you make some really good arguments for your order in this video. Super awesome!!
i love how you can guess the next boss just by the theme you chose for them, like the sticker star gooper blooper theme for blooper or the partners in time bowser theme for the first bowser battle. i love that
I did that same thing at first I was like "oh another weak punk I’ll beat this guys head in" and then he damaged me and I was like "oh… ok maybe I’m in for an actual fight" then he whooped me but I later beat him this was also the fight I learned about superguarding in I went to guard and accidentally pressed B and hit a superguard and was like "well that helps" sorry this is so long I just felt like sharing what happened to me in that fight and how I had the same attitude as you going into the fight and instantly got steamrolled so yeah sorry again for how long this is
I like that the Shadow Queen isn't revived until the end, because the entire story has the suspense of wondering if she even will be. By all means, Grodus has the appearance of a final boss. You wouldn't be blamed for thinking he will be So as you chase him through the Palace of Shadow, you're wondering the whole time: will you reach him in time? Will you stop him? I think that makes it a really good story moment when the villain actually succeeds, and then is immediately destroyed by a significantly more dangerous villain
Couldn't agree more it's peak, but tbh for me i think her ranking stays 3 because doopliss and macho grubba just go so ridiculously hard. To this day i still get chills during those fights when i revisit the game
Big fan of when fights have unique audience selections. Like when you fight Von Grapple and the seats are 50% Punies on Mario's side and 50% X-nauts on the boss's. And of course, the guaranteed Bingo for the final boss sorta counts too. Wish that was given more attention in this video.
A few months ago, right when I was so damn hyped for the remake, I found your channel. You make solid content man. It's all so great. I've rewatched several of the series so far. Loved the infinite pit videos.
10:01 Oh lol, I didn't realize that new line was canon. I sniffed the feet for... reasons, and thought that the dialog after by him was based on which option was chosen. Kind of funny that regardless of choice he went for it. XD
My fav part about Grubba, is he's the same type of creature as Tubba Blubba who Imo is the most iconic boss of the OG paper mario due to his invincibility, the horror game chase sequences, he eats ghosts, and is part of Bows storyline (the best partner in that game)
My favourite Boss Battle in this game is the second Shadow Sirens battle because it is challenging and they have strong attacks especially Marylin with her unguardable thunder attack and if she charges before her attack you need luck that she use her punch. And Beldam has so many buff attacks that make the battle more harder. And when Doopliss clones one of your partners that you get after chapter 4 you can see how they attack und when he clones Vivian the battle is just to hilarious.
Speaking of Marylin, something that happened to me when I first played this battle, was that she carged up and so I decided to use Veil to dodge the attack, but instead SHE CHARGED UP AGAIN, and then hit me for 21 damage 🤡
You know what would’ve been so sick but the devs wouldn’t think was worth it to bother coding If the Grodus fight purposefully capped you at 99 exp so you guaranteed can’t level up going into the Bowser fight. That would help ensure the stakes say high since you won’t get the full heal. And then if you got star points cut off after grodus, they could be added to the total you get after beating Bowser!
Y’know, I love that you understand and explain how niche content subscribers work. I’m so tired of the “only 10% of you are subbed” weird guilt trippy thing that niche channels try, so you putting it together with “that’s ok but you can be part of the [10%] that helps me the most” is a really cool way to do it
I definitely rank Mush above Wakka. The problem with Wakka is that fight comes after you've made your endgame build and can most likely finish him off before he can retaliate. Prince Mush can throw you off completely the first time if his stance counters your strategy, especially if you use Jumpman or Hammerman. I'm terrible at Super Guards and Mush wiped me out three times before I figured out a strategy. with Wakka I didn't even see what his attack phase looked like.
21:43 I actually fought Whacka I believe during either Chapter 6 or Chapter 7, so you don't need to clear the entire game to fight him, but yes to the other requirements
I wish the treasure room was still accessible after defeating the Shadow Sirens it could have potentially been a really cool shortcut that Bowser creates if the game let you spring back up there after beating him & Kammy. Also Grifty reveals Gloomtail & Bonetail as well as the entire 4 Heroes vs Shadow Queen story if you pay for those.
i played ttyd as a child on the GameCube, however i never beat it due to the disc crashing every time i reached keelhaul key. the remake was the first time i actually beat through the entire game, and i went into the shadow queen fight unprepared. it took me many, many, MANY tries. that fight is so stressful, but, after getting the hang of it, was so exhilarating to finally beat. this game is so beautifully done!
@@rickjames5998 the game disc itself had many scratches on it so the game was always crashing, and it would never play past keelhaul key. the GameCube i played on and the games weren't mine, and i was only like 8 at the time so i never understood why it did that lol
When I first played the game as a teen, I didn't figure out Hooktail's weakness. All the evidence was clear as day to me, I knew I had to find a badge related to frogs, I assumed I had simply missed said badge. It just never even crossed my mind that a damn fx badge could have any effect in battle of than funny sounds.
My favourite fight in this game will always be Doopliss, even if he's very easy even if you don't know what you're doing. I wish the other games had you fighting yourself and your allies
14:48 He probably realized it after Bowser beat him in a Single Jump in the Chapter 6 Interlude. 16:35 If you have been doing everything throughout the game as you progress through the Story then you would have learned of Grifty's Tales and both Gloomtail and Bonetail were mentioned in that. 18:03 I wish that we got the cut content that was originally going to make Chapter 6 Bigger with another Shadow Fight as well as explain how Beldam created the Smorgs using Magic. I think that they said it was cut in the OG due to Time Constraints. 18:29 How are you doing so much Damage?
The iron cleft's weakness isn't being gulped but being hit by their brother and mush has a lot of moves. Maybe he threw the clefts at each other and he didn't see a need to throw mario at his partners. Or the clefts came after mush became the first champ
Doopliss is less powerful after Chapter 4 because Mario and crew (and seemingly everybody else) knows his name, and keeping it secret is what allowed him to use his magic to that extent.
I beat the Blooper boss and afterwards went "Wait... that was a boss?" because it was super pathetic. I knocked it down then just laid waste to it. I thought the prelude didnt have a boss lol
The juxtaposition of Bringle complimenting the unique mechanics of certain fights with the footage of him wrecking them in two turns is pretty funny. The Whacka one is the best
Just a thing about Shadow Queen. I've just finished my second ever playthrough (GC version) and I honestly don't think she's as insanely difficult as people say. Yes, she's a nightmare for a first time player but with a good offensive strategy (power plus P x 2, Yoshi, P-Up D-Down P, Power Plus, Jumpman, All or Nothing), you can destroy her pretty quick (or even cheese her in the case of speed runs), in which case her difficulty is more comparable to that of final Bowser from Paper Mario 1. In fact, I'd argue that Paper Mario 1's final boss is harder in a way, as the AI is incredibly smart such that there is no way to cheese it, meaning it can even give some of the greatest speed runners difficulty. In particular, the fact Bowser can heal 30HP up to 3 times is a big set back but as for Shadow Queen, as long as you keep destroying her hands, she'll never heal!
Ye sorry, I like not using power plusses and power lifts for bosses cuz I don't like being OP, she's a hard boss, but that's what I enjoy, my playthroughs normally goes with more balanced stats, and I never use attack power upping stuff, becuz I find my playstyle and a more balanced difficulty is fun, it's just up to you on how you wanna play it, make it easier or harder on yourself, I have fun with the game always and the Shadow Queen is my favorite final boss of all time.
You can fight Whacka as early as chapter 6 before putting in the star from chapter 5, actually. I continued after a PHP and got all the Whacka bumps from him before leaving Keel Haul Key. I got the email when I was in Rogueport.
I love Hooktail's curly design! But my issue with her is that she has a weakness...and no other boss does. Like, the first part of a game should teach you the mechanics you'll use for the rest of the playthrough. But after Hooktail, there's no "secret weakness" for any other boss. I legit used different sound effects on different bosses as a kid because I hoped it'd help me. It's kinda like all those JRPGs that give you the ability to inflict poison, sleep, etc. but then make every boss immune to all status ailments, rendering them useless. (omg I'm in the video!)
You know technically gloomtail and bonetail ARE foreshadowed by an npc in petal meadows. He mentions that it’s rumored there are two dragons that are even stronger than hooktail and then just laughs it off as a joke. It’s foreshadowed from chapter 1 to 8 so it’s not that memorable or impactful, but it’s a cute detail I love
You don’t have to beat the game to get Whacka. He’s accessible as soon as you’ve beaten the Pit and hit him on Keelhaul. It takes a sec to get the email but you can fight him pre-chapter 6.
Macho Grubba was such a dope fight, being able to finally fight him in the remake for first time was great. It was a tense fight and I even got the finishing blow with Yoshi
Regarding Doopliss Lore. I think his ability to take mario's body has to do with the fact that he knows Mario's name, but Mario didn't know his. This name thing is supported by the fact that to enter twilight town you need something with your name on it. And you can only defeat doopliss once you know his name.
Whacka is broken by the fact that he can only get bumps by either getting hit or wasting his own turn to shake the floor. Veil completely neutralizes him.
I respect the hell out of you for picking Macho Grubba as the number 1. I always considered him the coolest boss in TTYD because of a number of factors: - The whole time playing Chapter 3 for the first time was so suspenseful. Trying to figure out who X was, and more importantly figuring out who the real villain of the story is. You get your victory against Rawk Hawk but so many questions go unanswered and for it to end up being Grubba himself was a really sweet plot twist because he always looked so friendly and fun to talk to. I know he made himself suspicious when you were eavesdropping on him above the ceiling but still. I was genuinely more surprised at the Grubba plot twist than I was the Doopliss one. Although maybe because he resembles Tubba Blubba from Paper Mario, people who started with PM64 could easily tell he was the baddie probably. - The fight itself: seeing 60 hp on Grubba was an "oh shit" moment. The highest HP opponent we met before Rawk Hawk was 30 hp (Bowser/Magnus) and since this is the chapter before you get Power Lift, 40 hp was a lot on its own. And then you fight someone with 60 HP, likely completely unprepared too because most people immediately chase after Grubba instead of stocking up on items and whatnot. Not just that but his whole mechanic of buffing his attack or defense then using a number of moves that can do heavy damage to you made the fight genuinely challenging for that stage of the game. Again once you get Power Lift the future bosses (Doopliss, Cortez, even Smorg) are much more manageable. But vs Grubba it - The MUSIC. Next to Shadow Queen's final phase, Cortez's theme and Crump's theme, Grubba's boss fight is so intense. It's a mixture of urgency, dread but also conviction. You're taken by surprise at the situation, and are also probably scared after seeing what he did to King K and Bandy Andy, but while I was fighting him and listening to the music for the first time as a kid, all I could think of was "this madness ends now!". The high paced techno beat was awesome. People say they prefer Rawk Hawk's theme but Grubba's theme carried a lot more gravity and tension to it. - I don't know why but for some reason I had the impression that despite Grubba being a scumbag, the way he almost respects Mario throughout the fight and considers him a worthy foe, which is probably why I felt that conviction from the music. Yes this was a fight for your life because if you lost Grubba would literally kill you. But it also felt like a glitz pit match, THE glitz pit fight. A one on one (or in the case of your partner - two on one) head on confrontation. This was further compounded when he said things like, "Not too shabby, Gonzales. You got showmanship, an' that's GOLD in this biz. But this here's battle's just gettin started! It's time I showed you some real moves!" Almost like Grubba was treating this not as a deathmatch but, like I said, a glitz pit fight. And then later when he said "I ain't finished yet, Gonzales!!! Ain't over 'til it's over! That's the way it goes in combat sports, son!" Again it felt like he almost respected as an opponent. There's no trash talk like him saying "pfft you're so weak you're not even worth the effort" the way Rawk Hawk was treating Mario. Grubba was complimenting Mario, acknowledging his strength while at the same time staying confident in his own abilities. Even at the end when he loses he said "Oh... Great... Gonzales... Great fight, there, son. Great... fight." He had a sense of sportsmanship and honor in battle, which is ironic considering how dishonorable his actions prior to the fight were. I couldn't help but respect the guy in return. I just love that fight so much. A perfect level of challenge and difficulty, and the events building up to it all were just so suspenseful.
In prince mush’s defense, rawk hawk’s foul play is trying to poison you *and* fighting like an ass. I’d take much less offense to a guy doing a flashy kick that sends me straight to god bc he’s just Like That than I would someone tampering with my fun snack.
Yeah, Mush has some crazy tricks but those are just raw talent at work. Meanwhile Rawk Hawk slips you poison and tries to time you out by bribing security into trapping you in an abandoned locker room.
I remember when i got to the glitz pit and i kept wondering if Prince mush would show up, and when i got the email i got so excited! I just knew i was gonna beat his ass, and then i got absolutely destroyed twice 😂😅. I feel like that got me into using more of the utility moves than i ever did when i was younger playing the original
Here's a bit of a correction, you can still fight Whacka BEFORE post game, more specifically at least Chapter 5 since that is where Whacka makes their debut. Just gotta whack em until they are gone and defeat Bonetail, in whichever order you desire. You do get the REM Extra Issue email later as you progress through the story, assuming you have met the conditions I stated. I would love to see that be a challenge video: How early can you beat Whacka?
Honestly Rawk Hawk is my personal number 1 not because its a challenge... its just 100% presentation. MUSIC! RAWK HAWK HIMSELF! IT'S JUST YOU, HIM, your partner, AND THE CHAMPION'S BELT!
Vivian is a huge emotional cord that develops throughout the game Balaam is consistently threatening and plays an important role in The game's climax and Marilyn says gua a lot
Your hunch about the Shadow Siren-Smorg connection is probably right! There's unused data for Beldam and Marilyn enemies likely meant to fought in Chapter 6, so them unleashing Smorg on the train is likely a plot point that was considered but cut for dev time and/or story pacing reasons. Sadly there's no unused dialog to hard prove it, but it's a solid headcanon at minimum. Edit: There's also data for Beldam, Marilyn, and Vivian enemies that would fit in Chapter 4. All five of these unused Shadows are in a pretty incomplete state though, lacking basic things like graphics.
You should try to beat Thousand Year Door with all the bosses and enemies having double HP. I recently beat the game this way and it was a lot of fun. I made a rule that I wasn't allowed to use peril, danger, or power bounce strategies since those would have trivialized the game. I found that Sleepy Stomp was extremely useful since a lot of enemies and even bosses are really weak to sleep
I honestly really agree with the Doopliss ranking. from the moment I fought him for the first time (and my first ttyd playthrough was recent) I knew it was the best one imo. the way he turns into Mario, the entire fakeout sequence after the first fight, everything was executed superbly. not even mentioning the fact he takes your partners and really pushes you to the limit, it's times like those you realize how much the partners do in this game lol
Omg that number 1 spot was deserved it’s my fave boss and I was so happy to see it. I’m happy to not be alone because that fight was awesome and the mechanic ties into the crystal star you receive. I have no complaints and it was a fantastic video.
Nice top 5 for your S rank this time like your last video you showed and mentioned that I enjoyed! I'm surprised 😮 but get why you ranked Doopliss and Grubba above the Shadow Queen, they are fantastic villains since seeing Grodus and Doopliss on his own is better than with the Sirens in ranking. Just wow 😮😊🎉❤😮😮😮😮
Seen this in a few videos now but I'm 99% sure on my play through I got the email about the "new creature in the pit" before I beat the main storyline(I did hit whacks to max and clear the pit)
Since you like Chrono Trigger, do you think you could try a challenge run of that game? Males only would be hard, because you don't have a permanent male partner until robo, and you're also locked out of using Ayla.
