I know a lot of people like it, but I agree with your take on Circle of the Moon. Story was good (read it, since I didn't finish the game) but gameplay was just not there for me. People hate on the 64 games so hard, but I thought they were good. They weren't the best but for the first time, being the first ones in 3D, I thought they did well with those. To me they're so important because they paved the way for Lament and CoD, which are two of my favorites in the series. I don't think Lament and CoD would have been so good if they hadn't "tested the waters" with the 3D in the N64 era.
Yeah imo most ppl over hate the early 3d games for reasons that seem to not bother me or you. Where as everything in circle of the moon drives me up a wall gameplay wise
@@bakih20 Yeah, for sure. Man I totally agree with you on the forward forward thing too. It's not so bad when I'm playing on an emulator with my PS4 controller, but doing that on the GBA when the game released just felt atrocious.
Portrait of Ruin is my all time favorite! I don’t see how people don’t love it, it has everything and without it, I wouldn’t even be a castlevania fan.
@@mrg2155 portrait is fun but some of the portraits in the game just aren't fun levels. The circus comes to mind. Also some of the missions are pretty lame. Portrait has one of the better stories especially when playing them in order of timeline
@@bakih20 I played it in like 2008 and I mostly remember the circus level, I even remember the boss of the level was a Legion ball, that’s like the only level I remember from the entire game. Not sure how that’s bad, I think that’s a good thing. Maybe if you don’t like clowns or think circus levels are stupid, but I think it’s creepy enough and unique enough to be a good thing. Like I said- it’s the only level I even remember after like 15 years.
@@bakih20 I compared it to the other DS games and I don’t like drawing the symbols in Dawn of Sorrow, that ruins the whole game for me having to use my finger mid boss fight. I also don’t really like the feel of the rune weapons in Order of E. But I remember changing characters in portrait was awesome, I remember the portraits were like “mini castles” that branched off the main castle, I remember the ultimate attacks the characters shared, and if you didnt like the dual character thing you could send one of them away and play solo. Gameplay wise: I think it’s completely unparalleled among the metroidvania variants for “fun combat.”
@@bakih20 I started replaying the 3 DS games all tonight cuz I haven’t touched them in years, but portrait is still easily my favorite. I can still see how people would like Order of E more if they were bigger fans of the 80s games era with the village stuff and the feel of the combat being slower and harder levels though. The backgrounds of the levels are also prettier in Order of E. But portrait has the coolest combat BY FAR and I’m a big fan of the portrait system making the castle feel much bigger than it is, it feels like the biggest castle to me. Maybe I will appreciate Order of E more this playthrough now!
Props for even having the Blackberry title Castlevania 64 Legacy Of Darkness really improved the ledge grabbing and camera controls but I love both versions
Interesting to hear your opinions. I'm playing a bunch of these games via the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and the Castlevania Advance Collection for Switch, primarily, though I beat a couple games previously. I guess my ranking so far is: S: Castlevania 3 A: Castlevania, Super Castlevania IV, Bloodlines B: Castlevania 2, Harmony of Dissonance, Mirror of Fate C: Castlevania 2 Belmont's Revenge D: Castlevania the Adventure I actually had a blast with all of them so far, even The Adventure, although save states made it more manageable and less tedious. The music was good anyway. Nice to hear good things about the N64 titles. I haven't had a chance to play them, but I think I would be sympathetic to what they were trying to achieve with them.
@@darthboxOriginal yeah the only game I truly don't enjoy is circle of the moon. But the rest slap. Great tier list so far keep me updated on the next ones you beat!
Cheers dude. I just finished Vampire's Kiss the other day, Dracula X as you know it in the US, and I actually really had fun. Not perfect, but cool. I haven't played Rondo, so can't compare. And now I'm on to your least favourite, Circle of the Moon!
@@rexation8952 diff strokes for diff folks. You must love pressing ffwd ffwd every two secs. Its the only Vania game that you dont get healed after bosses in like ALL of Vania lmfao
I am correct. When you defeat bosses in circle of the moon you dont get healed... its THE ONLY Vania that is like that. That game is too zoomed in. Turns music off when looking at map. Lame abilities. Pressing fwd fwd to run gets tedious as all hell. Whip spin is lamer than ever.
