It’s crazy that halo 2, a 16 year old game, was able to have great maps which were inspired by, but not taken from the campaign. So many games don’t do that in 2020, 16 years later. Halo 2 really a legendary game
That makes so much sense!! I bought an OG Xbox from this guy in my neighborhood, and he had Foundation on Halo 2, and I could never figure out why it was there!
The TimeSplitters Channel My brother had foundation, and when I use to play foundation and he told me it was a secret map only the best players could get.
Technically you are correct. But due to a bug instead of unlocking the level by completing the campaign the only way to unlock it was by completing a training event on "the great journey". Bungie later patched it to be available to the base game if you updated via xbox live, or purchased the multiplayer map pack, the latter being how I played this map.
There was also a glitch in the original version of the game where this map wouldn't unlock unless the player performed a tutorial event in campaign, such as doing a banshee flip when the game prompts you to. It was a super weird bug, but it was an actual thing.
*a month ago* Rocket Sloth: Guys start pronouncing things right please. It's killing us. *now* Rocket Sloth: You can see panteant tangent running around-
Fun fact(s): - foundation and gemini are maps from Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity - Gemini is a map set in and around the Garden of Reverent Contemplation, a garden where the prophets (notably Truth) meditate. It is very close to the Prophets chambers, and is part of a district of High Charity dedicated to the Higherarchs. Directly below is the council hall/throne room where you start the mission Gravemind - Gemini was also one of the first places on High Charity where fighting between Brutes and Elites broke out. It can also be seen in the skybox of the mission Gravemind once you get to the ledge where Arby was given the mark of shame. - The place where Dare's life pod crashed, the nightclub in Halo: Reach, and the equivalent firefight maps for both have lots of similarities to Ivory Tower - Shortly after the beginning of the mission Regret in halo 2, miranda keyes sent a group of marines (including several NCOs) known as RECON 127 down in an albatross dropship to survey an island. This island was the map Relic. The team died or were captured, but the covenant forces in the area either died or left. - The description of Relic says: "Covenant scripture dictates that structures of this type are memorials to Forerunners who fell in battle against the Flood." However, the covenant are actually wrong; it isn't a memorial, the tower is a small portion of a dormant forerunner ship's exterior jutting above the surface of the island. Even though RECON 127 died or were captured, they apparently sent scans to the In Amber Clad. This is one of many such scientific incursions that led to marines trying to get to the Library during Sacred Icon and Quarantine Zone - The albatross-type dropship is only ever seen two other times in all of halo media: the fall of reach animated movie, and the map Sandtrap - Elongation is a cargoship with supplies from planets outside the Sol system not yet yeeted by the covenant. It was supposed to bring them to earth, and while you play on the map, the ship's automated systems are packing cargo crates full of stuff to send down to earth. However, this ship (called the UNSC Onan) was on the other side of earth from Cairo station and New Mombasa, and was in high orbit, so it didn't get attacked by Regret's fleet. Interestingly enough, it is a military ship, so I'm guessing the cargo is mostly munitions, car batteries, firearms, and rations - The UNSC Brasidas used a MAC canon to shoot down from orbit into the atmosphere (hang on to your teeth everybody) and gutted a scarab that was in the middle of climbing between skyscrapers. It landed, heavily damaged, in the map Turf Apparently, the marines who boarded the crippled, dying scarab to pwn the remaining covies and make sure that the Scarab was 100% dead began to dismantle some of the inner components of the scarab to claim their prize. This is why you see crates of flammable stuff and radioactive stuff, and a bunch of oxygen tanks. The marines were trying to remove the scarab's interior stuff (a lot of which is radioactive). They must have been using oxygen tanks with HAZOP suits or HAZOP masks to clear the scarab's core, which is now poisonous and radioactive due to the MAC blast screwing things up, and flammable stuff for a torch and burn op. However, the marines also sealed off the block and established a temporary medical tent and took up positions throughout the streets with warthogs to defend this newly gained victory from any covenant reinforcements attempting to avenge the scarab - Sanctuary was actually discovered by a UNSC ship called the Coral, instead of the In Amber Clad Thats all I got for now
@@hailtdaking18 Most of it is from Halopedia, but a lot of it can be figured out from the game itself. Additionally, it helps if you play Bungie's Marathon trilogy (they released it for free like 10 years back, and its still good fun) as there are a lot of references to those games in Halo multiplayer maps
I wanna see at least 15 maps in base game each third having small/medium/large maps than possibly a 16th map being huge. Like GTA huge and not as a Fortnite map, simply just Big Team Battle with 320 players.
Bloodgulch is without a doubt getting a remake it would be the only halo game not to have it if it doesnt. But I wish sidewinder would get some love from 343.
My favorites are 1. Lockout 2. Blood gulch remake (I don’t know the names of most of the maps) 3. That one map where it has the halo CE pistol Easter egg
Dude putting District in the bad maps is illegal. This is one of my favorite maps and I'm still playing it today. The fact that there are secret paths makes the thing 10x better
Eh, back in halo 2 pc it had major Dust syndrome where every single server seemed to have the same map on ctf all the time making me hate it due to how grey and bland it was.
Yeah in addition to being a great map for CTF and Team Swat (two of my favorite gametypes), this was a prime level to glitch out of the map using Spectres and “sword canceling,” which I’d spend hours doing just dicking around with my friends
Absolutely, Relic should have been higher in this list. Maybe not Coagulation high, but it was a great BTB map, it worked great in vehicles or on foot, it was fantastic in asymmetrical objective games, and it had hardcore Mac World 1999 drip. It had everything you needed to be a great Halo map, I always had a great time on Rellic.
@imkaneforever yes you are right Ivory tower is a legendary map I remember I always hated when I'd get Back wash in halo 2 matchmaking back in 2007. But compared to how maps are now. Halo 4 5 and infinite I think bungies worse maps are better than 343 best maps.
Beaver Krieg, Zanzibar and Ascension are definitely my favourites. We've always been playing it with 3 players on split-screen at my neighbour's house on his XBOX and there are just so many memories on those maps. Thank you for this video!
I would personally rank Terminal higher. I love maps that include external features/hazards like Zanzibar specialized with, and having a working PA system, parking gates that raise, and of course the ever present train dooming anyone going for the sword or overshield without looking both ways, made it really a special map.
A little trivia about foundation: It's a remake of a map that was originally in Bungie's earlier game Marathon: Durandal. I think it was called "Thunderdome".
Yeah pretty sure it was because I play Marathon: Durandal on the Xbox 360. The original Thunderdome however lacked the bunker in the middle of the remake Foundation.
Agreed. Quick vehicle and rocket responds made this game lots of fun in big team battle. The core of the map too made for some crazy close range chaos.
I kinda just automatically like the human themed maps more than the covenant and forerunner maps because I'm used to the human theme. I would always go to a human map instead of another map unless I was curious. My first halo was H3 and H4 on Xbox 360. I later got the other games including og halo and og halo 2. When I later got the MCC for xb1 i installed halo and halo 2 for it. I was surprised about the new maps not knowing they were HCE PC and H2 MMP and H2 PC exclusives. Because halo 3/ODST/4 are downgraded on MCC I only play HCE multiplayer and H2A and H2 on MCC the other games I play og. I might get halo 2 multiplayer map pack disc in a few weeks so I'm hyped. Hyped for og H2 MMP because MCC uninstalled for me because of the damn update. I hate installing 111.1GB because I don't have a modem and my wifi runs averagely at 0-5mbps.
honestly turf will always be my #2 ftmp me and my friends would always go to this map. system link with 3 other people the doubles matches where too much fun i will forever love this map it was a big part of my childhood (sorry turf lock out will always be my #1 im so sad for a sec i thought turf was it black out really killed my love of lock out apparently
All the ones you put at bottom are just slept on and underrated. You probably haven’t played them enough to like it because MCC always puts you in lockout ascension, Zanzibar and beaver creek and they get very boring. District, terminal, waterworks and backwash are so cool and unique I would love MCC to play them more often. I haven’t played 1 online match on district and I’ve been playing MCC regularly for a couple years now
Same, my competitive list looks way different than my casual list. But yeah my custom game list where my friends and I basically just did mods or glitches is: 1. Headlong 2. Ascension 3. Foundation 4. Coagulation 5. Turf 6. Relic 7. Burial Mounds 8. Terminal 9. Gemini 10. Containment
okay so this is gonna sound cheesy (like cheese is gonna be all over this) but honestly, I look up to guys so much! Rocket Sloth has to be my favorite channel, I said this was gonna be cheesy because I think literally everyone says this to their favorite youtuber, twitch stream etc , but it's actually very true! Anyways, amazing video as always you guys! Cant wait for the live streams! :D
I love the aesthetic on Backwash. The flood gurgles and fog are so creepy. It's fun for free-for-all gametypes but I kind of hate for team games though.
As a FREQUENT player of Halo 2: Project Cartographer, I can attest to District being an EXCELLENT MAP: *For a Server Browser game* The Layout is perfect for some casual, social fun, with enough freedom to goof around while shooting the shit with the enemy team on a 30 minute all District server. In a fast paced matchmade game? Not the best. But at this point, I have yet to boot up H2PC without finding at least ONE District server. It's like the Hightower to Coagulation's 2Fort.
@@theyrbaning4751 and I (as a person who hates halo 3 multiplayer) am very confused. Opinion is opinion but can you really like that gunplay? I undestand some people love it but how so many?
I thought that every Halo 2 map was unique in its own way. I never got tired of playing the game continuously and it always has some exciting features. some maps were large but that was great if you had a sniper and all the weapons were very well balanced. its my favorite game hands down and every map gets a 10/10 for me!
Personally, a few days ago, when playing Halo 2: Project Cartographer with some of my friends, District was our favorite map for: Slayer, CTF, Oddball, KOTH. So that's where my opinion differs, but the rest was respectable and agreeable.
Thank you for not drooling over Midship. I played OG Halo 2 from launch until 3 came out and I never understood the hype. I played MLG until my eyes bled as well as custom games and I never understood why people loved it so much. Even now when Midship remakes come up I just go “ugh not this again”
The best match I ever played on Halo 2 was on Waterworks. We had a huge LAN party going in my buddy's basement with full 16 players. We were playing CTF on Waterworks, and the the teams were so evenly matched that neither team had scored after more than three hours! Getting so close to scoring or saving a score right at the last moment was tantalizingly fun. Sadly, the match interrupted when someone tripped over one of the ethernet cables on the way to or from the bathroom, and everyone de-synced and the match was over. That was maybe 15 years ago now, but I still remember it fondly as one of my best gaming experiences.
Ngl some of what you say makes me question if you even played full games on these maps or if it was just jumping around with a couple friends exploring. Everything said is so surface level. How can you talk about Ascension without talking about tower of power? Or foundation and not talk about zombies? Were you even alive during the halo 2 xbox days?
Waterworks was so good. The weird visuals of the giant Forerunner pump thing and the caves made for some memorable battles. Containment was a ton of fun with the banshee. Terminal was a cool mix of Outskirts with the wetness of Ivory Tower
This may be a dumb idea because it is so subjective, but you could do a video where you do pros/cons of playing as Red or Blue on maps like Blood Gulch, etc
Can tell you from a competitive standpoint, generally, you want red. Symmetrical maps like Blood Gulch it doesn't matter too much but on other asymmetrical maps, red is usually better (which is why higher seed teams are on red in competitions.)
Great video, as usual :). In a very personal opinion I would put Terminal and Waterworks higher in the list because I love BTB; and I always liked Ascension way more than Lockout (although I know that the latter is way more beloved by most people), maybe because I just kept falling from Lockout ja, ja, ja. Just as a quick feedback, and it might just be my own perception, but the narration could be more fluid; it feels a little intermittent/cut/broken, kinda like an online AI converting text to speech, or very small phrases or words put together in Pr on post; a little bit dizzying at the end. But regardless of that small detail, a fun, entertaining and well done video as usual.
Back in the day I was in a big team battle focused clan at one point and we would go into matchmaking games with a full 8 with the full intension of winning. Not a lot of people played big team battle that way as it was definitely more about just having fun but I have to say if you play big team battle with that mindset you realize how effing good headlong is. In objective game-types offence and defence are so equally balanced
Midship is my favorite Halo map of all time by far. With the exception of big team battle, it is the best map for any amount of players. It works as amazingly for 4v4 as it does for 1v1 and 4 player ffa and everything in between. Also, if you've never played 4 player juggernaut on Midship, do it. That was one of me and my friends favorite things to do.
@@frostchaotic3691 lol, I meant "in between" as in everything between 2 and 8 players, although to me, 16 player swords sounds like fun in a stupid way. Although I was a big fan of mosh pit in Halo 3, which was just jamming 16 people into a room that's about 30 ft wide with energy swords and grav hammers.
I came to comment on something you didn’t mention and looking through the comments nobody else noticed either. Elongation is a remake of Longest from Halo:CE and as a person that enjoyed 1v1 Longest the boxes in Elongation actually really hurt the dynamics. I’m a little surprised that nobody has commented on that it’s not an original Halo 2 map.
I find it hilarious that you kept saying big team battle for a majority of the maps, when the majority of us were playing those as split screen with 2-4 players max back in the day. We had no internet back then 😅They never really felt small and were so much fun. I find maps in infinite are two small sometimes. I miss the big maps. Exploring and stuff, finding glitch spots etc.. good old days. Headlong will forever be my favorite halo map ever. So many memories and it’s also the first map I ever played in any halo game. It got me into the series.
I didn't know that "uplift" map existed. I didn't even know that Halo 2 was available for Windows Vista. I have great memories from all of Halo 2 maps. I can't decide which one is the best. Back in the day, I wanted to avoid certain maps in matchmaking to not lose. But now, I just want to relive the moment, even if I lose. Sometimes, even if you lose, you learn a lot.
Whenever I play halo 2 on MCC instead of the original I get every player to start without weapons but scatter them across the map. On og I just start with pistols. And I always use vehicles with choice it's a feature of halo.
I made it 11:30 minutes in and I realized: You guys have done strange taste. Probably not going to be watching any more “best and worst” vids from you.
back like 10 years ago my uncle had an og xbox (he gave it to me now) and the only map we used to play on when me him and my brother and aunt would play was coagulation or zanzibar because they were just so fun and yeah it was cool 10/10 best maps
Best map ever is Ivory tower for 4vs4. In a ranked matched one guy fell asleep and was snoring over the headset. We cared so much about our KDA and bragged about it. This map was perfect to mess with our mate. Pushed his afk ass to the lift, lift goes up, he gets sniped. We did that until the game ended. I think we lost 6-50. There was something about power weapons and ammo in Halo 2 that made this possible.
Burial Mounds was amazing. And ya don't need BTB to enjoy it. Course i played it when the game was new back in the day. I'm sure it was a different experience then.
can we get an f in the chat that you have to have a hard drive to play it on the Xbox 360 I dont have one EDIT: thank you for liking this never gotten this much likes I think
lmao dude you nailed which maps I hated the most. was not expecting that. Lots of nostalgia of me being a kids and bitching constantly about terminal and burial mounds.
Even if turf isn't that great of a map you still should at least appreciate the reference to roster teeth's Red Vs Blue series. Btw can you do a video on best halo vehicles of all time.
As an almost exclusive BTB player I am guessing I will disagree with most of this list. I absolutely love the giant maps in h1 and h2 and feel the slower paced gameplay they cause is something missing from further games.
I actually really like Uplift. I've definitely had some lame games on there but it's usually pretty fun. I like mowing people down on the bridge with the ghost.
yeah I think desolation is WAY better executed than foundation, in my experience the extremes of mega long sightlines and teeny weeny tiny cubbies is just such a pain, every time I play there I either outshoot and dominate my opponents or spawn straight into death every time. The little pathways on desolation mean I can move around and avoid cross map insta death. Trying to play it on MCC its really just luck whether or not you die instantly
